The Columns Exposes The Historic Past The very foundation of Athens College is intimately connected with the Bible. Residing in one of the huge columns of Founders Hall is an old family Bible which belonged to the master of a near- by plantation. There is no record of Matthew ' s weakness for corn liquor, but the column which bears his name has embraced a jug of the beverage since the days of its construction. Athens College was protected from these Yankee muskets during the Civil War by the personal order of President Abraham Lincoln, contained in a letter to Madam Childs, president of the college.
