Founders Hall whose v4 massive columns constructed in 1843 were of Athens Col ege None oi the material in this book is reprinted from LIFE magazine. Dedication To Dr. Naylor, a true gentleman and scholar, an educator who has blazed the trail for others, and the one who has made Athens College what it is today, we, the Staff, dedicate our 1941 issue of the COLUMNS to you. By your high idealism, your unalter- able faith, and your constant persever- ance you have endeared yourself to the hearts of all your students. You are a living example of service to your God and to your fellow men. It may very appropriately be said that you are: One who never turned his back but marched breast torward, Never doubted clouds would break. Never dreamed, tho ' right were worst- ed, wrong would triumph. Held we fall to rise, are batUed to light better. Sleep to wake. Picture of the Year r The Columns Exposes The Historic Past The very foundation of Athens College is intimately connected with the Bible. Residing in one of the huge columns of Founders Hall is an old family Bible which belonged to the master of a near- by plantation. There is no record of Matthew ' s weakness for corn liquor, but the column which bears his name has embraced a jug of the beverage since the days of its construction. Athens College was protected from these Yankee muskets during the Civil War by the personal order of President Abraham Lincoln, contained in a letter to Madam Childs, president of the college. T. M. Moses prepares a legger for operation. There are six of these machines, production of which averages three dozen stockings each four hours. Columns Goes To The Hosiery Mill In June, 1940, Athens College established on its campus a silk hosiery mill to furnish employment for worthy students who would otherwise be unable to secure a college education, and one hundred fifty boys and girls have begun a new experience. This is the first of four such units. The others will be added one at a time for the next three years, thus making such an opportunity available for six hundred students. The process of making a stocking is a complicated one. The visiting amateur who goes through the mill for the first time would probably expect to walk up the center of the plant and see a series of machines which make the foot, the leg, and the top of the stocking consecutively and then maybe one which puts all the pieces together. But it doesn ' t happen that way. Your COLUMNS reporter, after a day of hard work last week took a stroll down toward the mill and became enlightened in regard to the situation. He dis- closes the results of his tour on these two pages. Clyde Shaw operates a footer. Production on these two machines is about twenty dozen each four hours. Eudora Grisham industriously carries out her share of the topping process. Smiling over her work is Neida Stew- art, who also tops. I. B. Mullins, who is likewise a supervisor, gets ready tor a full day of work. ?! i ii F tgjff KtJJM BB: (■(r J mm J f i r ' - ' At the Christmas party, held last December by the students who work in the mill, J. M. Moses acts as master of ceremonies and entertains the group. The girls operating these fancy sewing machines are seamers. This operation completes the manufacture of the stocking. It is now ready to be examined for defects. The plant as it appears at night. The stockings are assorted into different sizes and shipped at regular intervals. •1 ••• ■■-I ' . p- v% [LA55ICAL CLUB ' ,1 nDNDAY-4 30 •. Most bankers consider a loan good if it possesses the follow- ing qualifications: 1. A borrower who has a good business reputation and credit standing. 2. A sound purpose for which the loan is to be used other than a fixed investment in a business, for this type of loan is not a proper field for a commercial bank. 3. A reasonably short term until repayment for commer- cial loans; adequate security in the case of collateral or real estate loans. 4. Reasonable proof of dependable means for repaying the loan when due, or a definite schedule for repayment. This bank h as many good loans on its books. We are mak- ing new ones constantly. In every loan our first considera- tion is to safeguard the deposits entrusted to our care.
