The Athens High School Scholarship Society was organized at Athens High School in the school year of 1935-36. There were twenty-live seniors named by Principal E. B. Mell as the Hrst members. The qualifications for membership are .1 minimum of seventy-five percent A's and no mark below HB. When a student obtains this average, he automatically becomes a member. On February 28, seventeen Seniors were named by Mr. Mell to the Scholarship Society. The first meeting of this year was held Monday, March 9. Membership in the National Honor Society is recognized in education circles as being the highest honor that any high school student can receive. The Honor Society stands for outstanding achiexements in the ideals of Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. To be eligible for membership students must be a member of the third or fourth year classg must have been in the school more than one yearg and must rank in the upper third of his class in scholarship. The eligible students are nominated and elected by the faculty. Scholarship alone, however, will not admit a student to the National Honor Society. The team was captained by Charlie Owens along with Alternate Captain Buck Brad- berry. Coach Charlie Williilnas, in his First year at Athens High School, proved to be one of the best coaches in its history. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and is considered one of the best guards that it has had in the past few years. The First team was composed of: Ends, M. B. Wheeler and Morgan Harvillg Tackles. Poss and Burch: Guards, Bailey and Parhamg Center, Honeag and Backiield, Saye, Owens, Martin and Bradberry. M. B. Wheelei', who suffered Ll broken arm during the season, was replaced by Emmett Wier, who did a great job. The Maroons won the North Georgia Interseholastie Conference championships for the first time since 1959. The Athens team easily defeated Druid Hills in the finals, 56 IO 18. Athens suffered a great loss to Hartwell in the 10th district tournament because they Weren't quite playing up to par, but it seemed to give the boys more determination to win the N. G. I. C. The squad showed great spirit in every contest and only through hard work did they obtain such gratifying success. The team work of these boys will always be remembered at A. H. S. Conch L. C. The team was handicapped because of the lack of members, but did exceptionally well under the circumstances. Buck Bradberry, three-letter man, proved his exceptionally high value to the team by capturing First place in the broad jump and 120-yard low hurdles in both the State and N. G. I. C. meets. Both of these teams entered the state meet in Macon. M. B. Wheeler and Billie Wick- liffe won first place in the boys' and girls' singles respectively. This is the second con- secutive year M.
