Our main goal was to prepare for the Mathematics Contest at MacMurry. However, the April 14th blizzard prevented us from competing. Bad weather plagued us everywhere. Our first attempt at attending the Museum of Science and Industry proved futile as bad weather forced us to return to Athens. Later, we successfully made the trip. The first math club proved to be interesting, fun, and challenging. Row I Left to Right: Shelia Ethell Todd Sims. Kathy Ethell Row 2: Patty Manning Brian Lord. I feel we should concentrate on misunder- standings and communications in our School District. Ray Thomas What motivates you to continue your membership on the School Board? My desire to have a first hand involvement in the education of the children of our district. Being a Board member also affords the opportunity to be better informed regarding the largest and most important busi- ness in our community, that being School Business. Tom Emery — Superintendent John F. Gore — Principal Tom Walsh What do you feel is the most important function of a school board member? I think the most important function for me as a board member is to see that every child in the district receives an equal opportunity for a qual- ity education. 48 George Olson After retiring from the school board with twenty years experi- ence, why did you decide to run again? I have always been interested in school affairs and many people have encour- aged me to run again and I felt it was my civic duty to serve the community again. (Center Left) George Muller — Secretary What persuaded you to run for the school board this year? After attending school board meetings for si months I felt there were several areas in our school system that needed changed or improved. I felt that 20 years experience in office management, purchasing accounting and construction would allow me to be in a position to contribute to the group decisions, that the Board of Education must make, in trying to manage our schools in the best interest of all the students, teachers, and citizens of this district. Tom Ostermeier What do you feel is the most pressing problem in the school district? We need to get back to the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Ken Gustafson What do you feel are the strong points of our school district? I feel that we have one of the better school districts in the area. We have a competent staff and with the district financially sound we should be able to build on this. The student body is well behaved and the morale of both students and staff has improved. We continue to show growth in enrollment thereby allowing the district to keep the curriculum intact. Though we have deficiencies in our educational system, I feel that the students coming out of our school system have a better education that most schools in the area. 49 I. Most of the squad showed constant improvement over the course of the year. One school record was established. Rob Burns broke the 3200 m run record on 4 different occasions during the year. Coach The 1979 Warrior X-Country team enjoyed the finest season ever by an Athens team. Youth dominated this year’s squad, with two seniors, one junior, four sophomores, and two freshmen running in the top seven runners most of the year. Several highlights marked the season. Som of those being: A first place finish for David Balster in the Athens Invitational freshman race. Taking rist place in the Sangamo Conference and narrowly missing (41 -44) a first place finish in the New Salem Conference meet. The Warriors went on to place third at the Franklin District and Qualify for the Sectional. At Sectional an eighth place finish by Rob Burns qualified him for the State meet. Rob's sixty-fifth place (out of 159) was a great accomplishment. Rob’s also finishes his senior season as the new school record holder for X-country. Youth, enthusiasm, and hard work will continue to bring success to the Warrior X-Country Program.
