1978 ATHENIAN Athens High School Athens Illinois DoYouRemember... 3 ALARM Alarm time contains everything happening at AHS from before school to lunch hour — trying to make 1 st hour without an unexcused tardy. . . sleeping in class. . . 7:45 Student Council meetings and Key Club meetings . . . early morning assemblies . . . catching up on sleep in the teacher’s lounge. 4 Athens Community Unit District 213 will undergo a tremendous change next year if the school finances are not increased. Voters have failed one bond referendum and await a second one. The students are faced with severe cutbacks if new revenue is not found. 6 1. Mr Emery cleans up after the staff Christmas breakfast furnished by the administrators. 2. Although snow storms will always be a part of the Athens school year, 3. turmoil centers around whether or not agriculture and FFA will be cut. 4. Art may also be eliminated and 5. AHS will no longer have any cheerleaders if all extra-curricular activities are dropped. 7 From the arrival of yearbooks on the first day of school in the fall to graduation. AHS bustles with activity. But student life includes more than activities, sports and organizations. 1. Nick Primm popping corn for the junior concessions 2. Mark Dunaway enjoying our short lived student lounge 3. Sheila Ethell running off those ' beloved spelling sheets. 4. The first yearbook party was a success 5. Cheerleaders Sheila and Linda selling candy bars for much needed new uniforms. Our school day involves more than just classes. Lunch became more creative this year when 1. Mr. Emery rented a milkshake machine for the cafeteria. 2. The menu offers a slight choice with the addition of chef salads. 3. Dale Dirks practicing basketball and 4. The varsity cheerleaders rehearsing is a common sight. 5. Several students leave Athens at 11:30 every day to attend Area Vocational School in Springfield. 6. Junior class officers total one day’s receipts in our annual magazine sales. 9 FADS REVEAL LIFESTYLES AND IDEAS Each generation attempts to impress upon society their own values, tastes and individuality. 1977 78 students are no different Their choice of clothes, cars, idols, music express their individuality. 1. At formal dances, a wide range of clothing styles can be seen from long gowns and Kjxs to leisure attire. 2. Almost anything can be seen on the feet. Although platforms and boots were • popular.'- old worn out tennis shoes are seldom discarded 3. Indian jewelry is worn by all students 4. Decorating your locker is a popular pastime and Tammy had plenty of help decorating and re decorating hers. 5. The most popular item this year is blue leans — in all styles possible. 10 IN QTYLE 1. Although Star Wars was well attended. AHS students picked Smokey and the Bandit as their favorite flick with Saturday Night Fever right behind. Favorite song of 1977 78 was Staym Alive. Favorite vocalist was Andy Gibb and most popular group — Bee Gees Our students like bumping and bus stopping but slow dancing is the favorite. Casual clothes is the choice over formal clothes and the favorite TV show is What Really Happened to the Class of 65. ’ Most students prefer to drive a Camaro. but many picking a 4 wheel drive truck, will disagree 2.1977 78 is shadowed with the death of the King — Elvis. 3. Skiing in Wisconsin added a needed break to our winter activities 4. Roger Walsh always found time for relaxation, and 5. Working on the yearbook is a never ending job. 11 STUDENT COUNCIL Executive Council. Tammy Brayton, Wade Meteer, Patti Banister. Sec.-Treas. Pam Wilcox, Mrs. Helen Dunn, Sponsor. Student Council. They organize roller skating parties, assemblies, dances after ballgames, and Homecoming. This year student council initiated the student lounge for upper classmen in good standing. One highlight was the WDBR All-Star Faculty basketball game. 13 YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE Homecoming 1978 was a huge success. Student Council organized many activities for Spirit Week, the highlight of which was the slave auction. 1. Dale Dirks brought a premium price when he was purchased by the freshmen who in turn sold him to the teachers. Dale was such a cute Warrior bunny but his “I love Richard'’ and “I love Robert'’ sign really won us over. 2. Although the freshmen received second place for their float, they won Spirit Week honors. 14 1. Friday's Homecoming Parade brought Spirit Week activities to a close. 2. Although spirits were dampened when the Warriors lost to Pleasant Rams, students looked forward to Saturday evening's dance. 3. Kelly Choate and Dale Dirks were crowned Queen and King. 4. Juniors took second place in hall decoration but first in float. 15 KEY CLUB Key Club Members. Ward Cantrall, Tim Rankin, Stuart Schmidgall. Bob Engel, Dean Abeln, Mark Stott. Jim Engel. We put in many hours working with photographers, designing layouts, soliciting ads, and trying to meet deadlines. Although the book takes a lot of time, we work on it because we enjoy it and want to produce a yearbook that will be appreciated by our student body. We welcome all comments and criticisms because we want people to notice that we strive to create a better yearbook each year. Many of their opponents were more than a little impressed as they fell victim to the Athens' bump set-spike power. The J.V. went undefeated in Sangamo Conference Play and added a conference trophy to the growing collection. Y I The Varsity also went undefeated in the Sangamo Conference for the third season in a row. Improved defense and a new offense with a sneak’' attack caught opponents off guard and sparked the Warriors to victory. In tournament play the varsity captured second at Delavan, third at the Athens Invitational, first in the District at Mason City, and first in the Virginia Sectional. Congratulations on a great season, girls. 33 VOLLEYBALL Top Row (I to r) Bob Elmore, Phil Cleer, Tim McCoy Row 3 (I to r) Mike Irwin, Les Freer, Bob Walsh, Wayne Yager, Dean Abeln, Matt Oglesby Row 2 (left to right) Vince Smith, Ron Draughn, Albert Jefferies, Greg Muller, Charlie VanMeter Row 1 (left to right) Kevin Parkhurst, Steve DiGiovanna, Dale Jefferies, Sean Newton, Steve Ogden, Steve Juers, manager. Coach Roemer stated, “The Warriors have been at peace with their opponents. It is time to break that peace.” Our team struggled at the beginning of the season but the varsity came through with some well-deserving wins — over New Berlin, Tri-City (where they scored 19 points in overtime), and Williamsville. The Warriors played well despite some difficult handicaps. For the seniors on our team. Coach Roemer became their sixth coach in six years. Our JV’s finished 11-10 posting big wins over rivals Riverton, Rochester, and Pleasant Plains. Cheerleaders are sponsored by Mrs. Judi Coady. 46 47 SENIOR TRIP 48 The Senior Trip marked the last time this group of students would be together. For four years the class worked to be able to afford 5 days in Florida. Nothing could dampen their excitement — not sleeping on the bus — not the rain at Disney World — not the two flat tires — not the sunburns — not the wake-up calls — not the monkeys — and not the charisma of Joe Cool. They returned to Athens tired, sunburnt, happy and sad. All that remained for the seniors was finals and commencement. Compliments of Jim Carter Ins. Dunn Paint Co. MY LIFE 1. and 2. Students enioyed the Homecoming Dance whether they listened or danced to Ben Steele 3. The Homecoming court was announced between games during Friday night s match against Pleasant Plains. 4. Spirit week always includes the popular pie eating contest. Representatives from each class devoured the cream pies to the encouragement and or •'queasy” stomachs of the audience. 50 1977 HOMECOMING The slave auction has always been a popular Spirit Week activity. Danny Smith returned for a command performance as our auctioneer. This year the basketball players were also sold to the delight of students and faculty members. Student council realized a nice profit as bidding went Sky High this year. Homecoming Court: Freshman attendants — Richard Dirks, Dana Jaynes; Sophomore attendants — Kevin Cook, Sheila Ethell; Junior Attendants — Greg Giddmgs, Penny Bryant; 1976 King Jett Jaynes; 1977 King and Queen: Dale Dirks and Kelly Choate; 1976 Queen Lisa Blakley; Senior attendants — Cindy Young,'Todd Graham, Julie Lott, John Bednarko, Loretta Beiermann, Brad Ingram. 51 GRADUATION 1978 Compliments of Drs. Goodwin and Stone The 1978 graduating class of Athens High School marked a first — having four seniors tied for the honor of valedictorian with a perfect 4.00 grade point average. These valedictorians are Kim Nance, Margaret Gaedtka, Todd Graham, and Cindy Mayfield Other seniors were also honored with awards during the ceremony. Semi finalist for Vocational Student of the Year — Lana Oliver Perfect Attendance for four years of high school — Tammy Brayton, Melanie Holt, Lisa Weidhuner Illinois State Scholar Awards — Tammy Brayton, Kelly Choate, Dale Dirks, Margaret Gaedtka, Todd Graham, Cindy Mayfield, Kim Nance, Matt Sale SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Prom Court. Dale Dirks Queen and King, Julie Lott, Tom Balster, Senior Attendants, Julie Bartlett, Roger Walsh Junior Attendants 55 Saturday Night Fever marked the culmination of months of hopes, frustrations, and work by members of the Junior Class and their sponsor. Students look forward to the prom as the big social event of the year. Buying or making a gown, ordering flowers, renting a tux, getting a suntan, finding an attractive hair style and getting a date are some of the worries that are realized. Prom night is always a special night for Juniors and Seniors as they experience Saturday Night Fever. 57 BONANZA SIRLOIN PIT Petersburg, Jll. A high school is a guide, a friend that leads us by the hand, teaching and showing us all that life has pre- pared for us, so that when we will have our destiny already made and we will look back dreaming of returning to be children and able to run freely full of joy and happiness. This is when we thank this school and its teachers. This is my opportunity to thank you, friends, for giving me the opportunity to share with you the most marvelous experience of my life. But the time has come to say “good-bye.” I can only say “Thank you and I will never for- get you. I am your Chilean friend forever. 115 116 Jazz Band: Jim Engel, Mark Dunaway, Sheila Ethell, Phyllis Roemer, Cindy Mayfield, Patti Banister, Roger Walsh, Jerri Boyce, Charlie Van Meter, Scott Henrikson, Mark Stott, Dale Smith, Tim Rankin, David Thomson, Bob Engel. Sean Newton, Jayne Paul, Mark Stott, Robin Snell, Charlie Van Meter, Cara Stolsek, David Thomson, Director Mr. Gary Niehaus 117 DO YOU We remember the good times we've had, the bad times we've had, and all those times in between REMEMBER? THE TIMES OF YOUR LIFE ... tJ We pause to remember 1. The student council dances, 2. Gus and Roger enjoying American Lit. before studying for finals and, 3. The countdown until school's out. 4. The Industrial Arts Club took time to give the teacher's lounge a much needed face lift. Enabling 5. the faculty to relax in luxurious surroundings. 6. We also remember David Richardson proving how crazy he is, 7. students trying to ignore the camera and 8. Nancy Dougherty modeling for art. 9. As the school year ends only the empty halls echo the times of 1977-78. 119 Your freinds say they’ll keep in touch, but you know they won’t. Your teachers say come back and see them. And you know you won’t. Maybe someday it won't matter. But right now it hurts a little. And what do we remember? As the 1977 78 school year draws to a close we, the senior editors, stop to reflect on everything that has happened during the year. At this time of the year we are both sad and excited about the end approaching. We will always remember the time spent listening to Mr. Fliege's jokes. Many of us were active in the different clubs and organizations and sports the school offered. Building floats for the Homecoming parade and planning the Prom will always bring back memories. Some of us were fortunate to travel to Mexico. Not all of our memories are pleasant as we recall cramming for tests, getting caught skipping school, doing endless spelling sheets, running laps in P.E., wading through the parking lot, and smelling some of the disasters produced in foods when the ovens wouldn't cooperate. The school year also included a period of tension, when friendships were broken, when schedule conflicts arose and the uncertainty concerning the referendum. The end of the year will always feature a bittersweet quality but the times of our life will never be forgotten. 120
