Together, the class officers, student council members, counselors and administrators work to keep AHS running smoothly. sident. MEET THE WARRIORS! Athens High School offers a versa- tile and comprehensive extra-cur- ricular sports program for its athle- tes. Boys and girls may excel in golf, cross-country, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, badminton, baseball, and track. 10 12 AHS AT WORK AND PLAY Both students and faculty members work to create an enjoyable school system. Aside from classroom activities, students involve them- selves in extra-curricular activities, hobbies, and part-time jobs. A 14 15 16 Salute 1976-1977 Athenian marks the first AHS Yearbook to include color. In order to show-off this special feature, a new section was designed to colorfully reflect our student body. The previous sixteen pages have been devoted to depicting all facets of Student Life at AHS. Now that the close of the school year is approaching, Athens High School would like to show its apprecia- tion to two members of our school system. Although it takes the cooperation of parents, teachers, stud- ents, administrators, janitors, cooks, bus drivers, secretaries, and board members, to create a succ- essful school system, two members of our staff de- serve a special recognition. With this in mind, the 1977 Athenian Staff dedicates this yearbook to Mr. James Pim Goff and Mr. Tom Roberts. Mr. James Pim1' Goff has devoted the last nine years of his teaching career to Athens High School. Mr. Goff, one of our high school guidance counse- lors, has been concerned with the development of I our students. Aside from academic work, Mr. Goff has always been interested in the athletic program for all students. He has coached our teams and ch- eered for them. Mr. Goff retires at the end of our school year and we owe him our thanks for his ser- vice to AHS. Mr. Tommy Roberts remains one of the unsung he - roes of our staff. For the past 10 years, our school has been able to depend on Tommy. He has donated countless hours to our school, its clubs and organi- zations, and to the community. We cannot come close to repaying Tommy for the selfless way he has served our school. We can only say thanks' and wish him a speedy recovery from his illness. 17 CAT This spring Athens High School held an athletic banquet to honor those students excelling in sports. Students participating in basketball, volleyball, cheer- leading, baseball, track, cross country, mat maids, badminton and wrestling were honored. Highlights of the evening in- cluded the Key Club Awards for sportsmanship and baseball awards. Pam Rankin and Craig Brown received the Key Club Awards. Coach Sponslor an- nounced that Jerry Wells was named MVP, a member of the All-Conference team and a member of the State of Illinois All-Star Baseball Team. The weather has played a great deal in the frus- trations and anguish of the student body and faculty. The uncer- tainty of knowing what lies ahead is usually baffling for all. The futileness and frustration aligned with the weather has reached out and touched our student body. We have witnessed the success of our volleyball and wrestling teams and the agony of our basketball team. We have fallen into the depths of hibernation instead of excitation. However, as the weather passes the true characteristics and potential of our student body and faculty will rise to heights of capability. And as the uncertainty of weather passes, so will the frustrations fade into a memory which will lead to the self attainment for all to the work- ing of a better school in 77-78. 61 63 FINE ARTS 64 L jOGOOGGGJJGG I---I---- 1 — □ □ODOGODC □ D G Didi Jaynes, Kim Phillips, Kim Nance, Shellie Qstermeier, Tammy Brayton, Kelly Choate, Patti Banister The yearbook staff has worked extremely hard this year endeavoring to put out the best Athenian yet. We have been very excited about including color for the first time and hope this special effect was put to its best advantage. Although the year for us has not been all glamour and excitement we still look forward to the day the books arive. We have strived to create a new image for the Athenian with the addition of color and innovative page design. A sincere effort has been made for the Athenian to re- flect the 77-78 school year for Athens High School. F.A. Beginning the year was the Sectional Soil Judging Contest in which Athens fared 7th out of 15 teams. In November the annual cit- rus fruit sale was popular with the community and the Chapter put $494. 35 in their account. Then came the hog butchering project. Chap- ter members met at Greg Bell's farm after school on Friday, February 4, where the hog was donated. It was then skinned and hung overnight at Dale Jefferies machine shed. The next morning the carcass was brought to the Home Economics kitchen where Mr. Hamer explained the various cuts of meat. Then beg- an a long day of cutting the meat to be ground into sausage. A total of 97 pounds was pack- aged. The sausage was put to good use on April 5th when the chapter held its first pan- cake and sausage supper. Guests of honor were were the parents and members of the comm- unity who had supported the F. F. A. through the year. Individual achievements were accomplished when William Mayfield became the Athens Chapter's first State Farmer in 22 years. His swine and beef projects earned this degree which is awarded to only 2% of Illinois 19,000 F.F.A. members. Concluding the year was an excellent showing at the Sectional Livestock Judging Contest. The team captured second place in both the Beef and Swine judging dividions. Jeff Can- terbury was the top individual in the Beef Con- test. William Mayfield and Wade Meteer shared top honors in a three-way tie for the Sections top swine judge. ► Eric Henrikson I Mfc eer, Don fmidgall, Dale COUNTY FARM BUREAU, R II FARM HOME Cindy Maisenbacher, Jody Taylor, Lisa Mundhenke, DeAnna Barbee, Pam Woodrum, Barb Lockart, Kim Nancy, Susan Moss, Candi Brayton, Joanne Caldwell, Linda Halford, Tammy Bray- ton, Barb Eden, Cindy Young, Cindy Mayfield, Dixie Bell, Shellie Qstermeier, Trudi McAfee, Loretta Beiermann, Cherie Agrall, Terry Glenn, Eric Henrickson, Carrie Agrall, Monica Gaston, Penny Bryant, Cheryl Eubansk, Lisa Weidhuner 78 0 0 0 0 0 0 D 0 0 0 C □ DC D 0 CCOQCOCOOQOOOOOO Madonna Markey, Carol Fuchs, Julie Lott, Nancy Dougherty, Vicki Muller, Beth Dowell, Connie Chastain, Debbie Heyen, Lisa Blakely, Paula Miller, Sheila Ethel, Sue Williams, Peggy Carmers, Karen Wells, Vicki Chastain, Jill Heyen, Georgia Mayfield, Lisa Primm, Jayne Paul, Anita Redding, Kelley Nance, Pam Dixon, Sherry Martin, Patti Banister, Kim Man- ning, Mrs. Fleshman 79 Susan Kimmons, Candy Conover, Ruth Thomson, Patti Banister, Roger Walsh, Pam Dixon, Kim Manning, Lynne Cooper, Ellen Emmerich, Kel- ley Nance, Carol Fuchs, Pam Wilcox, Paula Mil- ler, Jayne Paul, Mark Dunaway, Miss Davis, Nick Primm, Lisa Mundhenke, Shirley Hsley, Shellie Ostermeier, Barb Lockart, Jill Heyen, Pam Woodrum, Deanna Barbee, Sharlyn Jensen, Terry Neavill, Kim Nance, Pam Rankin, Kelly Choate, Cathy Babcock, Lori Brady, Lori Coady 80 Dear friends of Athene High School: T am very sorry to have to le t you; fny experience here has been mar- velous and I think I’ll never forget it. I have enjoyed myself very much here. I have become acquainted with many places and people. I have matured more. I have enriched my spir- it with different experiences. I feel I am returning home a better person than when I came, and this I owe to you. Likewise, I hope you have found my company enjoyable and that from me you have learned some- thing new and useful from me.
