And what a celebration it should be! The freedom and dignity of human beings around the world is being abused, threatened, or de- stroyed—a freedom received from the hopes, ideals, and sacrifices of countless millions from the beginning of time. Although no government is perfect—being imperfect humans—we in the United States of America have so much to cherish and be thankful for. Nowhere in the world is there such free- dom as we possess. We are envied, feared, and hated because of what we have. No, our freedom did not begin at Lexington and Concord, Valley Forge, Yorktown, or Independence Hall! It has always been a part of our human nature. May we, the graduating class of 1976, rededicate ourselves and our country—with the help of God—to keeping alive that freedom. It is our right and duty as a free people. Boys are invited to join on virtue of their academic standings and ability to get along with others. Among other things, the Key Club this past year helped move the library downtown, painted the conces- sion stand at the ball park and helped paint the com- munity building. They also ran the mushroom con- test, sold concessions at the International Fiesta in Sherman, assisted the Sangamon North Kiwanis at their dances, directed cars for the October Fest, and washed the school busses, plus various other things. The Key Club annually hosts their parents at a Parent Appreciation dinner and hosts the Kiwanis Club to a Saturday Breakfast. The Key Club also sponsors the male and female sportsmanship award each year. This year the Athens soph, team compiled a record of 10-11. Although their record was not overly impressively, the team displayed real improvement near the end of the season. The ex- perience gained will be helpful in their next two hardcourt seasons and to the future of Warrior basketball. ... RRIORETTES 40 Randy Yager, Jerry Judd, Craig Brown, Sean Newton, Eric Henrickson, Steve DiCio- vanna, Dave Fuchs, Ralph Jennings, Dale Jefferies, Coach Porter, Brad Sandidge, Paul Johnson, Bob Walsh 42 This year's wrestling season was one of joy and sad- ness. Our joy was in taking our first wrestler (Randy Ya- ger) ever to the state finals in Champaign. Our sadness was in the fact that we probably would have had 2 or 3 go had it not been for some serious injuries during the regular season. In a school our size, when you lose 2 or 3 good athletes to injury, it is almost impossible to have a winning team season. We did, however, have some very successful individuals during the season: Randy Yager 26-10-1, Dave Fuchs 20-11, Ralph Jennings 12-2 before injury, Eric Henrickson 7-4 before in- jury, Craig Brown 9-5-1 before sickness, and a pleasant surprise, Brad Sandidge 11-11. Randy Yager finished unofficially 6th in the Class A State in the 126 lb. weight. Randy also set all the team records this year except for the best percentage on number of wins for number of matches wrestled. Graduating from this year's team are Ralph Jen- nings, Dave Fuchs, and Jerry Judd. Bright things are in store for the wrestlers who are returning. Look for several of them at the state finals next year. They'll be there because they WANT TO! 43 44 Brenda Hamilton Janet Judd Pam Parkhurst Maureen Walsh Jackie Nation Lisa Wells Diana Chastain Shirley Ilsley Margaret Gaedtka Melanie Holt Lori Burris Kathy Smith 45 48 Members: Terry Neavill, Pam Parkhurst, Libby Cole, Nancy Collins, Bob Elmore, Lore Tomlin, Brenda Kern, Kim Evans, Candi Brayton, Diana Williams, Pam Rankin, Carrie Agrall, Kim Manning, Jim Anderson, Tim Rankin, Norma Collins, Mary Williams 50 m ATIO NA L Wm] O NO R 51 SCHO LASTIC BOWL Dave Fuchs Pam Campbell Jerry Judd Brad Clibum Gary Stott Sandy Seipel Judy Ethell Dean a Markey Mrs. Hurie — sponsor SPEECH CONTEST Tammy Brayton Kelly Choate Steve Goodson Anna Dyer Jill Trainor Charlie Choate Mrs. Miller — sponsor 52 Each year members of the Spanish and French classes can elect to go on the Spanish trip to Mexico which has become an annual event. The Spanish trip offers the students a chance to experience a world different from Athens — different food, different sights, a different language, a different culture, and Montezuma's Revenge. Students making the trip with Miss Davis this year included: Pam Campbell Cathy Babcock Lori Brady Steve Goodson Dave Fuchs Lori Coady Lynn Lanterman Kim Nance Sherilyn Jensen Kevin Mundhenke Julie Lott Angie Wasilewski S3 Seipel Sherry EtheU, Dean a Markey, Madonna Markey, Terry Neavill, Debbie mann lnlie r CoadV. We were definitely in a rebuilding year but we man- aged to grab 78 ribbons and 5 medals. I think with a little work we can promote track to the level of recognition it deserves. This group of boys this year was an outstanding group to work with. We worked hard but most important we had fun.
