They were the only ones who could meet the rigid intelligence requirements for starting the first civilization on the moon. Even the pilot, Captain James Finch, and his co-pilot Gary McCallister, are from this great graduating class. Nancy Blakley, the outstanding conductor, led the Athens band in a farewell song just before the class entered the spacecraft. Gary Richardson, multimillionaire owner of Richardson’s Rocket Racket, has Financed this flight out of the goldness of his heart, and Pat Freeman has donated the fuel from his Shell Station. The passengers and crew will be well taken care of by the stewardesses, Miss Sandra Kiper and Miss Sally Murray, and the dietician. Miss Virginia Burris. The food is being furnished by William Hamilton, the owner of the first McDonald’s in Athens, and will be rationed by Pam Hughes, president of the Weight Watchers. After prayers by our religious leaders Larry Ethell and Joyce Wooley, I begin to stroll around the passenger section. As I walk, 1 hear snatches of conversation from the alumni. The three authors are discussing their new books: THE REVISED CANTERBURY TALES, by Ronald Canterbury; THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK, by Harold Cantrall, and THE TANGLED TONGUE DICTIONARY, by Sharon Satorius. Suz Lawson and Suzanne Marten are making plans for their restaurant, selling cole slaw and weinies. Dave Schmidgall and Steve Council are having a conference with Mark Patrick presi- dent of the Farmers Savings and Loans, Co. Rachel Jefferies, Miss Sunkissed of Florida, is telling Brenda Mitts that she owes her beauty career to Beth Backer, the renowned fashion expert, and Ron- da Caldwell, the famous beautician. As I walk on, I hear Bob Zook, the forest ranger, scolding Louie Mitts for shooting beavers without a license. Our own P.T.A., consisting of Nancy Kincaid, Susan Kemmerling and Chuck Yocum, is planning to educate the next generation until it is overflowing with intelligence. Rex Primm, Dwight Todd, and Mark Smith are working out plays for the first lunar basketball team. The girls will be kept in shape at the recreation center Barb Stroisch, Sheila Cantrall, Debbie Whitmore, and Lin Cole are planning. Rusty Daniels is discussing his ideas for a singing group called “The Moon Rocks” with Kirk Crivea; Becky Neibert and Angie Miller will be their devoted fans. Through the combined efforts of John Thomas, Gary Stroisch, and Rick Means, the next generation will not forget the Hell’s Angels. Karen Bryant, Judy Geary, and Joe Sandoval will manage our books to make sure our expenses don’t go sky-high. In the back, I see John Burns, John Richardson, and John Thresher are suffering from broken hearts because of the “Dear John” letters they received just before we left. The stewardesses are bringing our first meal now, so I’ll have to sign off. See you on the moon! The High School Band started out the new year with a new chiefette, Mrs. Garretson, leading tfie tribe. The band “cheered” the Warriors down the victory path by playing between games. They showed their Christmas spirit by performing at the Christmas program. Two moons before school dismissed to the Happy Hunting Grounds, the band held a Spring Concert which was comparable to Custer’s last stand with Indians losing. Even though Mrs. Garretson had to give her war cry about every day to keep the band quiet, she didn’t blow the roof off their tepee. 45 CHORUS Back row: Peggy Ogelsby, Mary Freeman, John Thresher, Jim Finch, Bob Reich, Jan Sarver, Diane Satorious. Most of their pow-wows were held after school. Following the tradition of Thanks- giving, they brought baskets just as the Indians shared with the Pilgrims. The pre-schoolers party was a big hit with Santa Claus presenting the gifts. The girls sold can- dy during the Christmas Holidays for fund raising pro- ject. The last main ritual was held in the spring when all the neighboring tribes assembled for a sectional rally. 48 The incoming officers Some people are weird, and then there are others. Hey! Rose Blossom. She was kidnapped from the stage by a bandit dressed in black with a tell-tale scar on his gunhand. Deadwood Dick was immediately credited with the villainous deed, but, unbeknown to the townspeople it was our daring young hero Ned Harris, (Yea!) who, masquerading as the villain, stole away his lady love. The scar on Ned’s hand gave his secret away, and Sheriff Loveless was soon hot on his trail with a warrant for Ned’s arrest. Meanwhile, back at the Man-Trap Saloon, Rose’s blind half-sister, Lily is introduced to the villainous, black-hearted Blackman Redburn (Boo!) who soon discovers that Lily holds the key to the location of a secret gold mine. Blackman and his accomplices procede to keep Lily captive in an upstairs room of the saloon until her secret is theirs. But like any young, handsome hero, Ned Harris acts in the nick of time to save Miss Lily at the risk of putting his own neck in a noose. Lily is reunited with her long lost mother and with the overwhelming happiness, Lily’s sight is restored. Ned and Rose find true love despite Ned’s impet- uous stage hold-up. And the evil Blackman Redburn, alias Deadwood Dick, meets his end at the hand of his jealous sweetheart. Without Black’n around to mess things up, they all lived happily ever after. •‘I’ll drink to that!!!!” What a night!!! Hey, did you hear about....? “We got a feeling!!!!!!” I always was scared of heights! I know I’ve sinned!!!! 65 DO YOU TRUST YOUR BOYFRIEND? While Mr. and Mrs. Meredith are out of town, their daughters, Kay and turbulent young Judy, are left in charge of Bessie, the Meredith housekeeper. Unexpectedly, Madeline Ross, a disturbingly attractive girl from a nearby city, arrives for a visit. Since Madeline’s father is one of Mr. Meredith’s best customers, Kay must make Madeline’s visit a pleasant one. But both Kay and her chum, Lois Andrews, are uneasy as to how Madeline’s charms will affect their boy friends, Steve and Tom. The high school band, of which Steve is a leader and Tom a member, is to give a concert at a neighboring town the same night. Kay, de- termined that the boys shall not meet Madeline, refuses to attend the concert, as it would be necessary to take her too-charming guest. Lois frames the excuse, by telling Steve that Kay is to have a business inter- view with a certain Dudley Harvard Smith—a name Lois picks from a book. Steve is openly suspicious. In desperation Kay produces a perfectly strange man whom she introduces as Mr. Dudley Harvard Smith. When Miss Denny, the high school history teacher, learns that Mr. Dudley Harvard Smith is visit- ing Kay, she discloses the electrifying fact that he is a noted historian and that he has undoubtedly arrived to award Kay a prize for her essay of Americanism. In addition, Miss Denny announces that the band will cancel their concert and will instead give a party at the Meredith home in honor of Mr. Smith. From this point the play is a riot of fun and action as Kay wildly attempts to keep Madeline out of sight; and events seem to prove that the strange man—who now refuses to leave the house—is an escaped patient from the hospital for the insane . . . but he isn’t.
