ATHENIAN THE N • . MR. JOHNSON MRS. MITTS We, of the Senior Class of 1965, should like to dedicate THE ATHENIAN to Mr. Johnson, who has so capably fulfilled the duties of his first year as principal of Athens High. May he continue to serve his community with the dedication, enthusiasm, and strength of character he has demonstrated during the 1964-65 school year. We, of the Senior Class of 1965, also wish to dedicate THE ATHENIAN to Mrs. Mitts, our loyal office secretary; for we fail to recognize the many responsibilities that comprise her position. The occasion is the dedication of the new Tice International Airport, just one phase of the Athens World's Fair, the most unique fair yet. To commemorate the opening, Randy Cundall, noted U.S. scientist, has exerted his unbounded efforts to the completion of a new rocket. Crowds have been gathering for the past three days to view the launching. The astronaut, Kay Kincaid, has ascended the steps to the rocket door and appears more than anxious for her trip to Mars to begin. We shall leave her there with her final preparations and study the people in the crowd. Taking everyone in at a glance it seems that the Class of '65 is predominate. Undoubtedly, its characteristic loyalty and enthusiasm have brought the class here to cheer on Kay and Randy. There, facing the crowd and behind a multitude of microphones, is Mayor Ronnie Hughes, praising the prosperity of our great city. Listening with duly-felt pride are the former Misses Donna Riech, Diane Hughes, Cheryl Wahlsmith, and Sandy Shanle, with their respective families. Now in sight, now out of sight, busy behind the scenes, is Barbara Cronister, organizer of many of the fair activities. She has just stopped to talk to Mike Cantrall to verify arrangements for the forthcoming Miss Universe Contest, of which Mike is a judge. Behind them stand Linda Abel, General Manager of M-Abel-leen, and Harriet Fawns, famous Hollywood hair stylist, discussing new trends in women’s coiffures and cosmetics. Look to the right and you can see three members of the CREW --Ruth Ann Huffman, Nancy Harrison, and Juliana Hackman, talking about old times and expressing the hope that the fourth shipmate Kay will have a pleasant voyage. Ruth Ann is presently employed by the makers of Jade East. She tests to see if it produces the right effect. Nancy has just returned from a singing engagement in Bluff Springs. She is scheduled to give us a sample of her talents in the course of the fair. She must be saving her voice, for she isn't saying much, or maybe Juliana hasn't been giving her much of a chance. We imagine the Hack has a great deal to tell the girls about her job as social worker in the large metropolis. Approaching the three girls to join the gab-fest is 20 Lois Ruth Bell, better known as Lovelorn Lois, columnist for the Indian Point Herald Times. Someone just mentioned that Gloria Ferguson was unable to come to the fair. Her Peace Corps assignment in Southeast Asia wouldn't permit the time. Also absent are Vance Jefferies, Eddie White, and Glen Maxwell, enjoying themselves on a six-month safari in Africa. They will make it to the fair later this year as will Keith Wasilewski, who has not yet awaken from his latest experiment at the No-Doz laboratory. Phil Lawson has just run across his old buddy, Leon Dennison, and how happy they are to see one another! Phil took time out from a very tight schedule of the filming of his popular TV series, Lawson's Law, and Leon, lead guitarist for the Athens Pops Orchestra has come with his fellow musicians to play for several of the events of the fair. Billy Basso and Butch Nichols have just exchanged greetings with old chum Larry Fitchen. Billy is now a well-known choreographer for some of the best Broadway plays, and Nick has just recently resigned from the Hawks. Fireball Fitchen is probably telling them about last year's races at Indianapolis. He fared very well and plans to give an exhibition of his skills at the fair. Duane Rapp and Duane Kern are talking to Chuck Muller, designer of many of the fair's pavillions, about the agriculture exhibits. Duane Rapp is the new Secretary of Agriculture, and Duane Kern has during the last twenty years accumulated much of the Fancy Prairie farming area. Barbara Peterson has just interrupted the three to ask Chuck about some final touches to the Lower Slobovian Pavillion. Pete is ambassador to this strategic Antarctic nation. Jerry Davis has come upon a group of former classmates to ask them if they'd like to rent some motor scooters from him to tour the fairgrounds. Merle Stroisch, research chemist at the University of Illinois, and Albert Winterbauer, who is doing upper-graduate work at the same school, agree to rent some scooters soon. Passing through the crowd is Mike Wilcox carrying several huge signs. He must be on his way to picket the Russian Pavillion. A hush descends upon the crowd. All eyes are glued to the rocket. Any second ... She's off--a beautiful launching! Loud, boisterous cheers follow the blast-off. 21 SENIOR SNAPS Santa's Joyful Helpers Oh, you beautiful doll!
