? DEDICA TION We, the Senior Class of '62, wish to dedicate our yearbook to our parents. Their understanding, as well as their many sacrifices, has made it possible for us to enjoy these past four years as fully as we have. As we look back over our high school years, we may forget some of the experiences we have had; but our memories of the advice and encouragement our parents have given us will not be forgotten. We appreciate very much all that our parents have done, and we hope that this volume will help us to express this appreciation. uum ADMINISTRATION AND FA CUL TT ADMIN 1STRA TION MR. GLEN T. On August 29, 1958, fifty-one frightened but anxious Braves and Maidens entered Athens Community High School. There they hoped to gain much knowledge from die Great White Fathers. A young Brave, Artie Neavill, was elected as head of the class with John Becker, Phyllis Markey, and Bill Hackman assisting. Mrs. Becker and Mr. Fee ruled over the wigwam. The young Braves served notice that they were going to be a great asset to the Athens Warriors' team. Indian Maids elected to attend the Braves' Honor Night were: Beth Ann Parks, Maryann Brookshier, Linda Sanderfield, and Phyllis Markey. The second year on the reservation Big Chief Bill Hackman was elected to lead the class along with Jim White, Ray Harrison, and Mary Beth Thompson. Miss Penner and Mr. Fee presided over the pow-wows. The Braves continued on the war path in athletics, and the Braves and Maidens in the band made heap good music. Maryann Brookshier and Connie Pugsley were the Maidens who marched with Warriors on Honor Night. The third year the war-party lost some of its group, but they continued with many loud war-cries. Lynn Freer was the chief scout for the group that year aided by Phyllis Markey, Mary Beth Thompson, and Paula White. Miss Jacob and Mr. Devecchio directed the smoke signals. To raise much needed wampum the group presented a play entitled Just Ducky. The war-party also traded wampum to white man for jewelry for their fingers. Now they were big braves and maidens. They left their reservation for the Prom and entertained the Senior Class in a Blue Hawaii setting in Springfield. 1961-62 was the war-party's last year on the reservation. A brave young Maiden, Mary Beth Thompson, was chosen as leader of the war-party, assisted by Pat Bozarth, Connie Pugsley, and Larry Hughes. Mrs. Becker and Mr. Glubczynski gave advice to the war-party that year. Heap big brave Bill Hackman was elected Chief of their Great Wigwam over all Warriors. The class is happy to end their four years spent here, but they are also sad to leave their beloved reservation for happy hunting grounds. CLASS PROPHECY PAULA WHITE, LOCAL GIRL, WINS STATE ELECTION FOR GOVERNOR, read the headlines in the Athens Free Press on November 9, 1974. This was a great event in my life, and I wanted all my former classmates to share the excitement, too. My decision to hold a magnificent banquet in the Governor's Mansion was made after little deliberation. I called my publicity agent, Barbara Blakley, and proceeded to explain to her what I wanted. She promptly sent out invitations to all the members of the graduating class of 1962. During the weeks that followed, the Mansion was buzzing with the news of the preparations being made. My maid, Mrs. Becker (who was once a teacher at Athens High, but who resigned to work for me) was making sure all the details on her part were taken care of. Mr. Glubczynske, the butler, was helping her. Wanda Sybert, our cook, was busy drawing up the elaborate menu. Miss Blakley came to me the day before the banquet. There were tears in her brown eyes as she haded me this compiled report: TO THE NEWLY ELECTED GOVERNOR OF ILLINOIS: The were received to the invitations that I sent out a few weeks ago. These people cannot come for the reasons stated. They all send their best wishes, however. Mary Pierce sends her regrets, but it would be a little inconvenient for her to attend the event because she is touring Europe. While there, she will visit Delores Showalter, who is happily teaching Social Science on the border of the divided city. After leaving Berlin, Mary reports that she will fly to Laos to see Pat Bozarth, who is an important figurehead in the Peace Corps. Mary also tells me that she has discovered that the stewardess on the plane which will fly her from Berlin to Laos is Linda Sanderfield. Linda has worked in Europe and Asia for some time. Phyllis Markey, Mary Ann Brookshier, Diane Kennedy, and Wayne Wells are attending a beauticians convention in Washington, D. C. where the First Lady of the United States is guest speaker. Phil Jackson, a pilot at Lambert Air Force Base, is flying Barbara Brown to Washington, D. C., where she is to cover an important President's Cabinet meeting for the Athens Free Press. Connie Pugsley is busy as an interpreter for the United Nations, which is in session the week of the banquet. Charles Spencer, a famous movie celebrity, is starring in a movie based on a novel which he has written and illustrated. The name of the movie is Cattle Dust at Twin Porks! Among the bit parts in the show will be Bill Sanderfield and Roger Tomlin, who both play detectives. Charles got his start when he acted in the senior play of 1961. Another star in his own right, Dick Lawson, a baritone opera singer will not make it either— due to a trivial fact. He is performing before the Queen of England. Larry Hughes and Larry Henrikson are on the road trying to sell the book they recently wrote entitled, SPELLING WORDS AS THEY SOUND. Joyce Hopkins is in California surf boarding with her hushand and two children. Junia Kent cannot come because she couldn't get up enough energy to figure out what she wanted to do. Ray Harrison is studying for an exam which will determine whether he can get through his third year at Harvard. Studying along side him is Bill Hackman, who is trying for his P. H. D. Edward Winterbauer is giving a test the day of the banquet, and he will be up all night grading it. Ed teaches at Yale University. Mary Beth Thompson has an important modeling engagement in New York. She is modeling the latest Paris fashions. Vera Todd couldn't find a baby sitter for her six children. Donna Gajewski has to be home to milk the cows. Jerry White, John Becker, and Larry Cramer are all in Africa on an important military mission for the Marines. Due to an important business conference schedule for that day, Bob Babb will be unable to come. He is second Vice-President of General Motors, Inc. Well, at least one of my brothers will be able to come. Jim sent word that he will attend if the menu includes ham. Artie Neavill says he will come if I give him the day off. (Artie is caretaker of the Mansion lawn. ) Artie Fisher is coming, too. He is the State Police appointed Governor's chauffeur. Well, it looks as if my banquet won't be as big as I thought it would be. I'm surely glad I have a hugh appetite. At least the food won't go to waste. 18 JUNIORS Linda Baum Marilynn Beccue Linda Bell Olive Boone Aj n si L r 4 kA Richard Bounds R —U Beverly Brown •A a. PEP CLUB The Pep Club is an organization which backs the basketball team and cheers it to victory. A Pep Club also provides financial as well as vocal support for the cheerleaders. The Pep Club of Athens High held its organization meeting in November. The following officers were elected by the eighty-plus students who signed to join the club: Paula White, President; Sandy Hughes, Vice-President; Linda Bell, Secretary-Treasurer; Connie Pugsley, Student Council Representative. The newly elected officials, the club sponsor, and a committee composed of Pep Club members set up certain rules and regulations for the members to follow. The Pep Club sponsored a Record Hop and a party for the basketball boys, cheerleaders, and Pep Club. The club purchased pom-pons for the cheerleaders and bought mascot buttons for its members to wear. The club also ordered ribbons with the picture and names of the team and cheerleaders inscribed on them. The Pep Club salutes Miss Byerly for the fine job she has done as our sponsor this year.
