Dale Bounds was our President that first year. Also elected were Jim Brown-Vice-President, Marlene Markey- Sec. Treas., Susan Canterbury-Student Council Representative. We had an exciting year with a sock hop and pizza party besides the magazine( sales, dances, games, and the usual parties. The girls elected to march Honor Night were Kathryn Powers, Sharon Tomlin, and Mary Ann Sanderfield-alternate. Miss Cordera and Mr. Fee gave us some much needed help that year. In 1958 we came back, fewer in number but ever so much wiser. Miss Cordera and Mr. Schmidt were our advisors. Jim Muller was our President, Jim Brown-Vice President, Susan Canterbury-Sec. Treas, Sandy Nance-Student Council Representative. This year, Mary Ann Sanderfield, Linda Holler, Janice Cundall, Kathryn Powers, and Susan Canterbury were elected to march Honor Night. We had a spaghetti party and did our best to make some money. Our second year at A. C. H. S. passed very quickly. In 1959, we had finally made it, upper classmen at last. This was to be our busiest year yet. We elected Jim Muller our President again. The other officers were Linda Holler-Vice-President and Susan Canterbury-Sec. Treas. The turkey supper, our big money making project, was a lot of work but well worth the effort. Miss Jacobs and Mr. Stevens were our class sopnsors. The boys lost the magazine sales contest and therefore, hosted our first class party. Soon it was time to plan the Junior-Senior Prom to be held at Washington Park Pavilion. Our theme was Rendezvous of the Stars . Everyone agreed it was a great success. Our junior play, If Mother Only Knew , gave everyone a chance to use his talent. One of the highlights of the year was the arrival of our class rings. The girls elected to march Honor Night this year with Janice Cundall, Susan Canterbury and Barbara Nichols. After such a busy year, we were looking forward to a long summer in which to recuperate. In the fall of 1960, twenty-nine seniors entered A.C.H.S. to register for the last time. We had lost several members, but what we lost in number we made up in experience. We were all old hands at this now. We were finally seniors. Jim Muller was re-elected President and Susan Canterbury-Sec. Treas. Barb Nichols joined them as Vice- President, and Jack Geary as our Student Council Representative. Don Libby was elected Student Council President. Mrs. Becker and Mr. Glubczynski were our advisors. Looking forward to publishing an annual and taking a senior trip, we started right out to make money with magazine and light bulb sales. We also had a bake sale and served lunch at a farm sale. The senior candidates Don Libby and Linda Holler, were elected king and queen of the Halloween Party. Then, of course, senior pictures were taken which was another big day. The senior play-”Bull In a China Shop proved to be one of the funniest ever. Senior pictures finally arrived, and the winter passed quickly. It was soon Prom time again, and then the senior trip, the climax to our high school days. Then at last, Graduation, the long awaited day. Thus ended four happy and busy years at old A.C.H.S. 14 . Qqjim v Cio S PiOph Cy We axe attending the open house party given by Sharon and Terry Barnett of Athens, Illinois, in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary. This is the most gala and happy celebration that the city has seen for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Barnett have invited all their friends and relatives to join the festivities. Say! Who's in that big crowd over there by the punch bowl? Why, it's the rest of the class of 1961! Serving the punch is Barbara Nichols, who flew in from Washington, abandoning her duties as secretary to Richard Nixon, to attend this open house. Serving cookies and cake are Susan Canterbury and Linda Holler, both professional nurses. Frank Roberts is sitting on the sofa explaining his work for the American Tobacco Company to Tedd Sims, who is manager of several farms around Athens, and co-owner with Lee Beare of the new Ultra-Modern Service Station here in Athens. David Engel, now married and Head Research Scientist for General Electric, is explaining the improvements in home lighting to Jim Muller, owner of a chain of hotels (probably a sales pitch). Congratulating Sharon and Terry are Donald Libby, sportscaster for NBC TV, and Marlene Markey, Hollywood's new M. M. Her latest picture is It Started in Cantrall . She is now Mrs. Donald Libby in private life. In the hall, arguing politics, are Dale Bounds and Jim Brown. Dale is owner and manager of Bound's Business College, and Jim is Chief Advisor to the United States Secretary of Agriculture. Eyeing the scrumptious-looking cookies are the former Misses Carolyn Hamlin and Sharon Tomlin. Both girls are married and each has three children, whom they named after former classmates. Jack Geary and Robert Abeln are discussing new trends in automation. Both Jack and Bob are Designing Engineers for General Motors. Sandra Nance, Home Economics teacher at ISNU, is asking Janice Cundall all about her career as make-up artist at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. The former Sue Neavill and former Dottie Emmett are representing the greatly enlarged city of Fancy Prairie. Both are now married to their high school sweethearts and keep busy taking care of their children. Betty Pierceall is explaining some of the many problems of managing Myers Bros. Department Store to Bernice Juris, owner of the largest restaurant in Athens. Mary Ann Sanderfield, the nationally know court stenographer, and Frankie Knoles, who writes a lovelorn column for my newspaper, are comparing notes on how they got and kept their men. Jim Smith, President of the Board of Education in Athens, is just arriving from an emergency board meeting. Also coming in the door are Larry Wells and John Dobson, who jointly own the Abe Lincoln Bowl. My note pad is full and my pencil is worn to a frazzle. I'll have to excuse myself now, because I have to catch a plane to Russia to cover the long- awaited summit conference that we hope will insure everlasting peace throughout the world. --Gary W. To be eligible for membership, a student must have received a B average or better in all academic courses for the first two years of high school. At the beginning of the junior year, he becomes a member but must maintain this average for the last two years in order to hold this membership. The Athens Chapter of National Honor Society was installed in February, 1947 Its emblem is the keystone and flaming torch. The keystone bears at its base the letters C, S, L, and S, which stand for the four cardinal principles of the organization: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Thus the keystone symbolizes the high ideals of the Society. The flaming torch is the emblem of its purposes, to bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, and to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life. Each member is presented a pin bearing the emblem of National Honor Society. Those members who remain in good standing until the time of their graduation receive permanent presentation of the emblem and membership in the National Honor Society at the graduation exercises. 37 BAND FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Barbara Brown, Marilynn Beccue, Alvie Fulton, Carolyn Fisher, Barbara Shannon, Connie Pugsley.
