✓ The seniors of 1955 wish to dedicate this, our annual, to Mr. Herman E. Gardner. With sincere concern and paternal understanding he has guided us through four years of numerous high school activities. Beside supervising the building of all stage equipment for our plays, he knew the right people to contact for articles in demand--even to supplying home-made pies for a class party. We feel that his efforts were truly beyond the call of duty. 2 MR. BYRAM. Superintendent and DOTTIE INGOLD, Secretary Athens Community District No. 213 began its seventh year of consolidation with Mr. Glen T. Byram as superintendent and high school principal. Mr. Mac served as assistant principal, and the secretary for the district was Dottie Ingold. The enrollment for the district is as follows: Athens High School, 163; Athens Grade School, 221; Cantrall Grade School, 94; Fancy Prairie Grade School, 64; Indian Point Grade School, 35. The total enrollment for the district is 577. Several new pieces of equipment have been added this year. The high school has a new scoreboard and new lighting system for the study hall. There was new seating in some classes at Athens Grade School, and all schools received a slide film projector and a record player. Beverly Twyla FLASH!!! FLASH!!!! May 14--Richard Howard, star of I Was Only Teasing You, was shot by his ex-fiancee, Anna Boone, New York socialite, last night at the Athenian Theater. May 15--Bob Walsh, coronor, announced that the cause of death was a bullet entering the left side of the heart, which agrees with the statement made by ballistics expert, Kenny Hamlin. Trial will be held May 28, 1969, at the Last Chance Court House. May 28--Called as first witness for the state was Sharon Jackson, leading lady, who stated that the shot came from the left of the stage. This fact was verified by Carolyn Fornoff, one of the star chorus girls. Arriving from all parts of the world to attend their old schoolmate's trial were: Lowell Powell, Ambassador to Denmark; Alice Marie Kent, governess from England; and Darlene Hamilton, soccer player from Australia. May 30--Taking the stand first for the defendant today was Margery Young, reknowned world traveler who flew in yesterday from Egypt to testify in behalf of her old friend. Recalling girlhood memories, she said, Miss Boone is definitely not the murdering type. Several notable personages seen in the courtroom during the trial today were Gene Hiles, Professor of English at Mt. Holyoke College for Women in Massachusetts; Russell Emmons, professional wrestler; Jack Adkins, head coach at U. C. L. A. While returning to our hotel after a trying day at the trial, we heard a familiar voice crying, Magazines for sale! Upon closer inspection of this figure, we found it to be none other than our old schoolmate, Sidney Grant May 31--The gay young divorcee, Virginia Walkup, was called to take the stand next. I definitely know that the shot came from the box next to me and when I turned to look, I saw a man dash from the back of the box, stated Miss Walkup. Also seen in the courtroom today were many of the defendant's old classmates of 1955: Shirley Yoakum, television dancer; Linda Whittenberg, famous dramatist; and Dick Watts, author of the famous book, How to Gain Weight in Five Easy Lessons. Going to the hotel from a weary day at the trial, we narrowly missed death when a poultry truck careened around the corner and the driver proved to be none other than Miss Barbara Noonan, our old schoolmate. Next to catch our eye was a group of people gathered around a small boy who had been in an'accident, but Dr. Stinnett was there to tend to the matter so we proceeded. Soon we discovered a neat little woman carrying groceries, who on closer approach proved to be Twyla Letz, who had just received the title, Typical Housewife of America. June 1--New faces seen in court today were John Richter, the latest male singing rage; Jim Watts, hog caller; Betty Holler, commercial artist; Shirley Connor, owner of Chicks Hatchery ; Delores Hendrickson, famous author of the book, How to Get Your Man and Keep Him ; and Howard Goodman, head pickle slicer at Buck's Delicatessen. Today was the great day; the defendant was called to the stand. Accompanied by her matron and psychiatrist, Judy Cline, Miss Boone arrived dressed in a Dior original, designed especially for this memorable occasion. Very convincingly she protested her innocence. Next witness. -- With your permission, Your Honor, I should like to call Jim Saffer to the stand. -- Permission granted. -- Where were you on the night the crime was committed? -- I am the star dancer of the Athenian Theater and was awaiting my cue in the wings. -- Tell the members of the jury and the court exactly what you saw happen. The defendant has long been a secret love of mine, and many times I have watched her. On the night of May 14, 1969, I was watching her, as usual. Suddenly I saw someone stealthily creep into the darkness of her box. I strained my eyes to make out clearly who the person was. My eyes perceived a gun in his hand. At first I thought it was aimed at my secret love, but finally I realized it was aimed at the star, Mr. Howard. Before I realized it, he fired the gun and Richard staggered and fell. Tell the court whom you saw.” It was Kenny Elliott, whom I know also to be infatuated with the defendant, but realizing that he could stand it no longer, his only resort was to murder. Suddenly, from the back of the courtroom a loud sob was heard. Yes. I did it, wept the murderer. The defendant fainted, the court went wild, and the judge rapped the gavel in vain. Thus was the astounding ending of the famous Howard murder case, as reported in the Alaska News Dispatch, by reporter Jane McMartin. 19 FIRST ROW: Carolyn Barrington, Karl Becker, Rosemary Britz, Linda B rooks hie r, Annette Bryant. It deals with such problems as student behavior and general improvements. All organizations of the school are represented here. There are fifteen members in all. The last year's council influenced the installation of a fluorescent lighting system for our study hall. They annually sponsor a Halloween party, to cut down on vandalism during this season. Besides a Christmas dance, they also sponsor a party the last day of school before Christmas vacation. Being president of this organization is a position of considerable importance and honor. The duties of this year's president ranged from filling candy machines to making speeches to the student body on the disadvantages of using paper clips in place of coins in machines. Here are a few questions that librarians have been asked: Could you find a good book for me--one worth a lot of points--can't have many pages--be easy to read and understand! There was never a minute to spare with Phyllis Jensen, our editor, making sure we had our interviews, editorials, news from other schools, feature articles, district news, and sports write-ups in on time. Of course, it takes more than that to have a progressive interest in the paper. It takes that gossip and those corny jokes to really put the finishing touches on. The production staff and our artist, Betty Holler, were an indispensable aid to the staff, and a great deal of assistance was given by the sponsors, Mrs. Todd and Mr. Hixon. At the first organization meeting there were about 65 students who showed interest. The following officers were elected: Judy Gustafson, President; Patty Seipel, Vice-President; and Richard Pugsley, Secretary-Treasurer. Some of the goals set up for the Pep Club are as follows: Each member would attend as many games as possible. The girls would be attired in green skirts and white blouses, and the boys would wear green shirts. Each member would willingly help to raise money for the athletic fund. Each member would show good sportsmanship and would therefore set an example for others. The Pep Club would practice with the cheerleaders. After the first game, the Pep Club was complimented on the appearance of their cheering section. Officers elected by the fifty-eight piece band, under the direction of Karl McWilliams, were Twyla Letz, president; Margery Young, vice president; Janie McMartin, secretary; and Judy Cline, treasurer. The band participated in the Abe Lincoln Music Festival this year at Mason City. Our annual fall concert and spring concert added to the many activities of the year. But not to be forgotten was the hard work and long hours of practice to fit each contestant, as near perfection as possible for this spring's solo and ensemble contest. A big event of the year was a Festival sponsored by the Band Boosters, in order to earn more money for new instruments to be purchased during the year. The Festival was climaxed by a dance. The point system was again used this year. It proved to be very successful. It taught us to be more alert and pay attention to the things that were going on around us. And it gave us a better organized band. Last, but not least, Thanks, Mr. Mac, for your patience in bringing to us many pleasant memories through music. On October 29 along with six other schools, the chorus class took part in the Annual Abraham Lincoln Music Festival at Mason City. They worked hard on such songs as, Old Man River, One World, and Now The Day Is Over. The chorus and band also presented a Christmas Tea, December 21. The girls ensemble participated in this. The springtime was welcomed with a Variety Show, written and directed by the chorus students. Everyone had an enjoyable time presenting this show, and many new talents were discovered. Also the Music Appreciation course was continued after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Many new participants entered the vocal contest this year. Everyone worked hard to bring back those valued ribbons, but fun was had by all. The Senior Ensemble closed the 54-55 year of chorus by singing their farewell songs at Commencement.
