K V f f r 1 K J- V S . | [ s 71 SS VT? 7lOff r?S JH J- DR. G. S. VAN WORKER We, the Senior Class of 1945, wish to dedicate this edition of the Athenian to Dr. G. S. Van Wormer. After coming to Athens in 1905, he has been outstand- ing in his interest toward the scnooi. He was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1920 and was a member contin- uously until 1942. He was President for four successive terms, 1927-1931. Then from 1931-1942 he served as its secretary. As a token of his loyalty, he left a plaque on which an outstanding student’s name shall be engraved annually. He has long been a true fisherman and basketball fan, and we wish to extend our heartiest welcome to him to at- tend our school functions. 2 u E . KenJ oN CE johNSoN CLASS PROPHECY I, La Verne Bush, was ushered into a dark, quiet room where Madame Free-Lee was seated gazing into an exotic crys- tal ball. The mysteries of the graduating class of 19 5 were to be unraveled to reveal tneir future within the next ten years. Madame spoke: To start the ball rolling, Jeanette Brown nas married former pfc. Albert Stott and nas cnarming twin sons wno are now five years old. And you. LaVerne, wno married Melvin Kinnaman, wno was anotner soldier, lives next door. You and Jeanette are partners in a beauty snop. The Wasilewski brothers. Gene and Alex, the former basket ball stars of AChS, nave reacned tneir goals as full-fledged Admirals of tne U. S. wavy. Tneir wives are living togetner in a swanky Fifth Avenue home. Gene Cordell is an owner of a large tobacco plantation in the Soutn. Ralph Kornack is his top foreman. Both are nappily married with large families. Vivian Henderson, who took a business course after fin- ishing scnool, is now tne secretary of a charming red-haired gentleman who is manager of H. B. Wilson Co. After graduating from the Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Helen Young is now a successful private nurse. Bernice Williams, a Home Economic specialist, is now married and living on an experimental farm in California. Jim Kopp has reached the height of nis ambition and is now basketball coach at wotre Dame. Imogene Tobias is at it again. This is her third trip to Reno. And once again she says For Keeps. Carol Gustavson is really serving ner country as a feminine member of the F. 3. I. We're sure she is a good one. This will take lots of concentration. Yes, there it is. Jack Wagner did marry tne blonde welder. While she welds, ne minds tne children. Second only to Earhart, Maxine Noel is occupied with her stunt flying. Kenneth Stone, honorably discnargedlhom tne service as a successful engineer, is manager of rebuilding the Golden Gate. Yes, and he married the red-haired girl. 6 Irene Foraen has hit the bright lights as a singer. She has received a year's contracta t one of the spots in Cnicago. Anna Mae Freligh, who acted as our prophet, hasn't dropped the profession entirely. She is now writing biographies, that is in her spare time. Her real job is working in an Army Air Force control tower. With a puff of smoke, Madame Free-Lee vanished and I found myself alone. Abruptly I was again ushered from the room into tne noisy streets of San Francisco. Say I Have I been dreaming? EDITORS' NOTE As a final effort, we wish to express our appreciation to all those who assisted us in making this Athenian. We gratefully acknowledge Joe Soboul as our staff artist. He did the job well. To our advisors, Mr. Berner and Mrs. Cruzan----we thank you. To ail the readers---we sincerely hope you enjoy this book. As you turn these pages several years from now, we hope you will catch a glimpse of the school days during the term of 1944-45.
