BASKETBALL Under the tutelage of Coach Sorrells, the Green Warriors played one of the hard- est schedules in many years, to come out victorious in two tournaments and the Little Six conference. On the regular schedule were five schools who were district winners of last year and who were semi-finalists in the sectional tournaments this year. In- cluding the tournament games, the Athenians won seventeen games and lost eleven. In the regularly scheduled games for the season, eight games were Won and ten were lost. Kilbourne defeated Athens in the upset of the Petersburg District Tournament, 16 to 14 in our first game. Playing at Ashland in wind and sleet the boys lost their last game 8 to 7, the only defeat of the season. In spring games the team Yost three and won one. Mason and Agee are the only' players to be lost by graduation. The line-up usrally included Mason pitching, Richter catching, Pautsch at first base, M. Grant on second, Markey on third, Baugher at shortstop, Agee in left field, G. Pierceall in center iield and Rogers in right field. Van Meter, Zschoche, A. Pier- ceall, and M. A dual meet held with Greenview was won by Athens and also a triangular meet with Greenview and Petersburg showed Athens the victors. The team, also took part in the Springfield invititional meet and the district meet at Jacksonville, with the possibility of another invitational meet as we go to press. At the Springfield invitational, Athens placed well, being among the first six of about thirty schools in their division. At this meet Agee won first place in the 100 yard dash, Johnson second in the 440 yard dash, and Grant placed fourth in the shot put. At the district meet Athens again made a good showing. Here Agee placed in the 100 yard dash and Kenyon placed third in the 120 yard high hurdles. Back row, standing: Trainor, Culver, A. Cline, Showalter, E. Smith, O'Neal, Cantrall Brittin, M. Stone. A. activities has been unusually keen this year. The organiza- tion under the supervision of Miss Spelbring has been very active throughout fall and spring. At the beginning of the year the following officers were elected: President, Wilda Hayden: Vice President, Eleanor Stone: Secretary, Irene Dirks: Treasurer, Audryn Cline, Student Council Member, Aldena Yoakum: Newspaper reporter, Marion Mc- Kean. In the fall baseball, basketball, volley-ball, clogging and natural dancing were taken up. Girls chosen as attendants to the Queen at the last home game this year were girls from the different gym classes. The Queen is also a member of the G. A. A. An outstanding event of the year was a Girl's Basketball Tournament. The teams taking part were as follows: Racing Demons, Thunderbolts, Ramblers, Lucky Six, Shamrocks, Hornets. Much excitement was aroused by this tournament and we feel that in a few years girls basketball will be as popular as that of the boys. Our G. A. A. has received two invitations to Play Days this year. One was to Feit- shans High, but because of several things were unable to attend, and the other to Greenview. Back Row: Trainor, Culver, M. The Pep Squad was under the leadership of Mary O'Neal, song leader, and Dortha Greer and Delbert Primm, Pep leaders. The girls in the squad numbered 33 and these girls were distinguished from the rest of the crowd by their purple and green pep jackets. The squad presented a stunt before the audience during the Athens-Greenview tournament. This squad financed their way to the District tournament by selling pop-corn at the last home game. The senior girls conributed a lot to make this squad the success that it was and they will be sadly missed when we organize next fall. This group, led by Miss Gilmore and accompanied by Marjorie Van Wormer, sang' several times in the community. Twelve girls were selected from the class to represent A. C. H. The most important of these was the purchase of a Conn sousaphone, a very fine quality band instrument which will serve the needs of the high school in band and orchestra work for several years. The interest in this type work is evidently greater than last year, as the orchestra has been called upon for more programs and entertainments than in previous years. This interest should be encouraged by making available, more time and more in- trumentsg also provision made for special instruction. This must be done in order that A. C. H. S. may keep pace with the progress of other high schools Where this type of work is considered a major project. The members of the high school orchestra express their sincere appreciation of the splendid cooperation shown by the people of the community who have practiced with them and in other ways helped to make the A. C. H. S. orchestra a success. f Back row: Dirks, VanWormer, Estil, Holler, Mitts, Walsh, C. Agee, H. Agee, Kenyon, Greer, H. Metz, Cordell. J Middle row: Miss Raisty, E. Primm, Ackerman, Parrish, D. ALPHA KAPPA Alpha Kappa fthe Greek names for the initials of Athenian Commercialites when written in shorthandl was organized at the occasion of a banquet on January 27, 1932, under the leadership of Miss Raisty, commercial instructor. The main purpose of the organization is to promote interest among commercial pupils and alumni. Meetings are held as regularly as possible once each month, and each meeting is divided into three divisions: business, instructional and social. The symbols of the organization are Stars of Attainment , foremost of which are skill and accuracy. From the beginning, very efficient officers have made the club a worthy one, for each successive year Alpha Kappa has advanced in accomplishment and in the inter- est of its members. The officers of 1933-34 are: President, Eugenia Baugherg Vice President, Dorothy Webb, Secretary, Dorothy Wilcoxong Treasurer, Marjorie Parrishg Reporter, Anna Engel. Back row: Council, H. Smith, L. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA In September 1929 the boys enrolled in agricultural classes and organized the Athens Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, a national organization which is divided into state and local chapters. Each fall the F. F. A. boys elect officers for the entire year. The officers for 1933- 34 were: President, Marshall Grant, Vice President, George Johnson, Secretary, Del- bert Primm, Treasurer, George Richter, Reporter, Edwin Grant: Student Council Member, Joe E. Spragg. Besides holding regular meetings, initiating new members, the F. F. A. boys co- operate to make the annual Ag Fair one of the outstanding events of the school year. Back row, standing: H. TI-IE ATI-IENIAN HOME-MAKERS CLUB In 1933, under the leadership of Miss Gilmore, all the girls who had at some time in their high school career taken home economics, organized for a year in club work. Last September the club met and elected the following officers: President, Mar- jorie Van Wormerg Vice President, Mildred Jensen, Student Council Member, Eleanor Stone, Newspaper Reporter, Wilda Haydon, Secretary and Treasurer, Zelma Hughes. A11 girls taking home economics this year, or who have taken it heretofore, were eligible for membership. The club was adiliated with the American Home Economics Association this year. On Friday before Christmas the club gave a Christmas party for the needy pre- school children. The county nurse attended one of our meetings and gave a talk on Diseases and Their Preventives . Two boy scouts from Petersburg gave a demon- stration on first aid. i The meetings for the year included a monthly social gathering, with one class period every two weeks devoted to club work. The programs dealt with the develop- ment of personality, leadership, self-reliance, initiative, social poise, and professional interest. Standing: Mr. Britton, Landrcth, Joachim, M. Hall, Mason, Henderson, Primm. Seated: Dirks, Kincaid, Yoakum, Barnes, Stone, Wilkins, L. Hall. ATI-IENIAN SUN The school newspaper was born of economic necessity in the fall of 1931 when the senior class adopted it as its official publication instead of the annual. A pictorial supplement in the final issue was dedicated as the Senior edition. It contained the usual views of school life and of the various organizations. The paper, called the Athenian Sun, was continued by the class of 1933, who initiated the idea of a senior pamphlet instead of a final pictorial supplement to the paper. In the fall of 1934 the seniors adopted a resolution whereby it was recommended that the Athenian Sun be- come the official monthly news organ of A. C. H. S. and that it be sponsored as a sep- arate activity under the direct control of the Student Council and edited by a staff from the school at large. The resolution was adopted by the Student Council, approved by the student body and during this year the Sun has taken on a decidedly greater appeal to the students, alumni, and school patrons. It has generally been con- sidered that the change was a valuable one. A circulation of three hundred copies is maintaired. The staff, elected by the school at large, consisted this year of the following: Editor-in-Chiei .......... ...........................,..... Assistant Editor .. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the student administrative head of all student activities occuring in A. C, H. S. Its work includes the management of school elections, pre- paring the school calendar, supervision of extra-curricular activities, auditing and ap- proving extra-curricular accounts, nominating the editor-in-chief, and the business, advertising and circulation managers of the Athenian Sun, authorizing point awards for extra-curricular activity of students, and appointing committees for special pur- poses as occasion may arise. No organization of students may be formed except und- er approval of the Council and the right is reserved to ask any existing organization to show reason why it should not be dissolved by the Council. In the general admin- istration of the school the Council is frequently consulted and serves as an able as- sistant to the principal and faculty upon many occasions. The Council is made up of nine members as follows: President, Richard Kenyon, Class of '34 and Secretary, Eugenia Baugher, Class of '35, Lillis Hall, Class of '36, Waldo Joachim, Class of '37, Ralph Primm, F. F. A., Joe Spragg, '36, Home Econo- mics, Eleanor Stone, '34, G. A. A., Aldena Yoakum, '34, Boys' Athletic Association, Billy Mason, '34, The president is elected by the student body at large. 5. x r SENIOR DIRECTORY The editors in cooperation with a committee of the Alumni have attempted to compile a complete directory of the graduates of Athens Community High School since the first year school was held in the present building. Every effort has been exerted to include for each graduate items of information relating to address and employment. Lady graduates are listed alphabetically by maiden names and in cases of mar- riage the matrimonial name is given. Omissions, if found, have been made inadvert- ently. It is hoped that when omissions are discovered they will be reported to the high school ofiice immediately so that an accurate up to date record may be kept. - . 1919 CUMMINGS, ADA Mrs. Fred Shaw R.
