Hall, Cantrall, Baugher, Smith, V. Lawson. In the Fall of the year 1930 a group of forty-five “freshies” began their career at A. C. H. S. determined to live up to their chosen motto, “Labor Conquers All Things . Their officers, Richard Kenyon, Billy Mason, and Eleanor Stone displayed capable leadership in many respects and the record of the class showed success in several fields. During their Sophomore year the class achieved still greater honors under the guidance of their new officers Marjorie Van Wormer, Josephine Barnes, Billy Mason and Richard Kenyon. At the beginning of their third year the class elected the following officers: President. Morris Hall; Vice-President, Hazel Cantrall; Secretary, Marion McKean; Treasurer, Eugenia Baugher. Although only three years of their stay at A. C. H. S. have been completed the group on the whole has held a very prominent position in both scholastic and extra-curricular activities. To the Junior class goes the credit of having been responsible for one of the biggest successes of the year “The Red-Headed Stepchild”. But the Juniors are bound for still better times. The best and last year is yet ahead. Who knows what may result? Campus Clicks SOPHOMORE CLASS Back Row—J. Rogers, G. Pierceall, Kennedy, Frost, Sanderfield, Cordell, Wiseman, Van Meter. At the beginning of their Sopohomore year the group found that they had lost six of their number. The leaders for this year were: President, Marshall Grant; Vice President, John Miller; Secretary, Mary Wilkins; Treasurer, Anna Engel; Student Council, Kenneth Baugher; Reporter, Albert Ruggles. During the year they gained two members, Emma Cordell and Charlene Kennedy. The class has displayed its talents in the glee club, G. A. A., orchestra and B. A. A. As this year comes to a close the Sophomore class is hoping for a bigger and better success in the year to come. (E a m p u e Clicks FRESHMAN CLASS Back Row—Henrikson, M. Pierceall, R. This class has rapidly distinguished itself in school life, having representatives in the musical, athletic, and elocutionary fields. With such a beginning, the class is looking forward to three more years of activity and achievement. Campus Clicks VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Back Row—Litherland, G. Johnson, Hackman, C. The baseball team got off with a poor start as a result of inexperience, but ended with a very successful season. They ended the season with five victories and three losses. Grant, short stop; G. Richter, catcher; Hawkins, center field; E. Grant, left field; Howard Agee, right field; G. Pierceall, center field. Coach Kambly will have five men ready for next year’s team and with several possibilities should do big things in this field. Campus C I i r It s TRACK TEAM Standing—Litherland, G. A great deal of interest was shown in track this year and the boys have enjoyed a most successful season. Dual meets were held with Greenview and University High of Normal, and a triangular meet was held with Green-view and Kincaid. Athens defeated Greenview, lost at University High, and finished second in the triangular meet, in which Kincaid was winner. At the Atlanta relays Charles Hall placed second in a large field of. competition, missing out on 5 ft. 9 in. Howard Agee placed third in equally fast competition in the 100-yard dash. Henry Hackman reached the finals in the high hurdles, but did not place. At the Urbana Relays, Charles Hall tied with two other athletes for first in the high jump. This was a very noteworthy performance, since the best and largest schools of the state had representatives at this meet. In the Little Six track meet Athens won first with Greenview second and Petersburg third. At the District meet Charles Hall was the only point winner with a tie for second. This gave him the right to compete in the state finals where he tied for fourth place with a jump of five feet eleven inches. (Campus (Clicks GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Back Row—V. A. activities has been unusually keen this year, and the organization, under Miss Spelbring’s supervision, has been more active than it has been for several years. At the beginning of the year the following officers were elected: President, Aldena Yoakum; Vice-President, Velda Lawson; Secretary, Margaret Primm; Treasurer, Hazel Cantrall; Student Council Member, Louise Claypool; Newspaper Reporter, Elma Johnson. In the fall, baseball was the major sport, after which the gym classes took up clogging. Two of the dancers, Velda Lawson and Aldena Yoakum, furnished entertainment at several programs throughout the year. One of the outstanding events of the year was the Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The teams and their captains were as follows: Hottentots, Louise Claypool; Skyrockets, Margaret Primm; Hot Shots, Dortha Greer; War Horses, Lillis Hall. The winning team was the Hottentots. As a climax to a year of fun, the Athens girls entertained several schools at a Play Day held on the local campus on May 13. The girls were divided into four groups, the Pirates, Cubs, Cardinals, and Indians, and the day was spent in athletic contests. Each of the schools represented presented a stunt. The Play Day proved to be one of the most entertaining ot the year’s activities, and the girls are anticipating next year’s work with enthusiasm. (Campus (£ I 11 k s BAND AND ORCHESTRA Back Row—E. Grant, Richter, Culver, Johnson, M. Grant, Henrikson. Second Row—Henderson, Engel, Turner, M. L. Johnson, Henrikson, Grant, Joachim. Third Row—Webb, Boylan, L. Hall, Barnes, E. Johnson, M. McKean, L. Johnson. A. C. H. S. has reason to be doubly proud this year—it has both an orchestra, as in past years, and a band. Since the school offers free instrumental instruction and several instruments, it would be advisable for more students to take advantage of them. The value of music as an extra-curricular activity is of equal importance and far more lasting than several others given a greater amount of prominence in our schools. Trained musicians spend hours playing for their own (njoyment and many earn their living with an instrument. Though the number of students doing orchestra work is smaller, the interest is much keener. The officers elected for the year were: President, Elma Johnson: Secretary, Marion McKean. Besides playing at Indian Point and the Methodist church, the orchestra has played regularly for programs and presented a concert of group and solo numbers. Although a very good start was made toward band work, it is hoped that the interest will be better next year and that the band can do contest work. The work done by the orchestra this year is an evidence of what might be done for the school in band work. Mr. Dewalt organized the band and directed both the band and orchestra during the year. Members of the orchestra and band express their appreciation for the splendid cooperation of the people from the community who have practiced with them and helped make the band and orchestra what it is by their inter • est. The two glee clubs presented an Irish operetta, “Bits O’ Blarney’’, whicn was well received. Each fall this organization has been reorganized. The officers for 1932-1933 were: President, Herschel Primm; Vice President, Clifford Wilcox; Secretary, Edwin Grant; Treasurer, Henry Hackman; Newspaper Reporter, Lyle Doom; Student Council, John Richter. Besides holding regular meetings, initiating new members into the organization, and operating an incubator and a sprayer, the F. F. In 1931, under the leadership of Miss Rupp, all the girls who had at some time in their high school career taken home ec. work, organized a home economics club. Last September the club met again, electing the following officers: President, Velda Lawson; Vice-President, Mary Opal O’Neal; Secretary and Treasurer, Thelma Lawson; Newspaper Reporter, Hazel Cantrall. Irene Dirks was elected to fill the vacancy made by Velda’s resignation in midterm. This year only those girls taking home economics were eligible for membership. Miss Gilmore became club sponsor after Miss Rupp’s marriage. The meetings for the year included a monthly social gathering, with one class period every two weeks devoted to club work. The programs dealt with the development of personality, leadership, self-reliance, initiative, social poise, and professional interest. The club has met with so much success that it has applied for membership in the state organization.
