-V .. “ We’ve Got It All!” Athens High School Athens, PA. Volume 147 i Table of Contents Section Page Seniors 4 Juniors 30 Sophomores 42 Freshmen 52 T M R 64 Staff 67 Sports 77 Organizations 103 Student Life 121 Advertising 139 Index 156 ‘Dear Fellow Students, As you glance through the 1988 Athenian, you will notice we have incorporated many new ideas. UVve added an inder and a section about student life. One of the more important ideas we ’ve incorporated is the addition of a theme. In choosing our theme, IDe’ve got it all ”, we wanted to let people know what life was like at Athens 'High during the 1987-88 school year. HVve taken the book and broken it into sections. Each section was given to different groups of people to complete. IDe gave each section a theme which corresponded to the main theme. Che index, located in the back of the book, was designed to make locating your friends easier. Che student life section includes special events which occurred throughout the year. It also has pages about our student exchange program. lOe have worked very hard to make this year’s Athenian special to the graduating class. lOe would like to thank CT)rs. 'Reilly, our advisor, and CDr. Charles 'Bollinger, our yearbook representative, for all the time and effort they gave throughout the year. lOe would like to dedicate this edition of the Athenian to (Drs. CDarilyn lOheeler, our school nurse who has decided to retire after working twenty six years with the district. tDe’d like to thank her for all the time spent helping the students and faculty of the Athens School ‘District. LOe wish her well! In closing, we hope you enjoy the 1988 Athenian. Chank you, ’88 Athenian Staff AHS 1988 Shayne Stein decorating for the Christmas Ball. Acorn Breakfast Club Every student waits for the moment when they are known throughout the school as a Senior. Along with this title comes the extra responsibility of deciding what to do after graduation. Sometimes the pressures of being a senior seem overwhelming, but the fun of Open Campus and other activities balances this out. This was our year to “rule” the school, get the annual case of Senioritis and generally have a good time. Along the way we even managed to study for all those tests and write a few term papers. The Athenian staff would like to wish the best to the class of ’88. We believe you really do have it all! Cktoe. We felt so grown up finally reaching the Middle School. This was the grade we had to get used to many new things. There were the YAD sports, the start of real athletics, and our first year of Home Ec and Shop. The highlight of the year was the trip to Camp Brule; three days of roughing it without mommy and daddy. For our class, it was three days of rain. On our last day of sixth grade we had our first Middle School field day. Seventh grade was the big year because we became teenagers. Remember all the nights of roller skating and all the dances we went to? How about the first dissections in Mr. Thompson's and Mr. Gabriel's biology classes? Eighth grade was our year of anticipation. We couldn’t wait to go to the High School. Some of us participated in The Three Little Pigs”, our eighth grade play. Then there was the day we all dreaded — saying the preamble on video for Mr. Wooster’s social studies class. We also had our eighth grade dance. This was the ending to our Middle School years and a way to celebrate our moving on to AHS. Looking back at those three years we see how we really started as a class. As we say goodbye to each other as classmates, we look back and remember our good times. Sa S itad. it (M — eDm tRen 27 Class of 88 Lady Bulldogs are u 1! Danielle practicing for the Philharmonic. From the time the homeroom bell rings to the final bell at 3:20 the AHS faculty is bombarded with excuses and outrageous stories from the student body. In keeping with this thought we decided to ask the faculty the following questions: What is the strangest thing you've seen in your teaching career? and What is the most unique excuse you’ve ever heard? The answers are found throughout the faculty section. We believe our faculty really has seen it all! SA e’l)t S em It M w mm School board — Row 1 Mrs. Marvin. Mr. Ross. Mr. Morris. Mrs. Farr. Harbst and company gave the loyal bulldog fans a year to remember. The great Sayre comeback, domination in NTL basketball, accomplishments on the mat and the field gave the class of 1988 many reasons to be proud. Through it all, the greatest fans in the NTL roared, cheered and celebrated. Coach's Corner Overall I was very pleased with the 1987 football season, especially since we lost 15 seniors to graduation in 1986. We won our traditional big games against Waverly and Sayre. The Sayre game was probably one of the most exciting games in decades. We had our fourth straight winning season and achieved our goal of making the PIAA District 4 playoffs. One problem we wished that could have been avoided was injuries to seniors Rob Gentile and Kevin Maslin. The fan support was super which helped boost our team’s spirit. -J. Every club is responsible for fund raising and arranging activities. This involves time, creativity and dedication from all members. Although expressed in a variety of styles, our organization all have talent. ATHENIAN Many people may not realize how much work is involved in producing our yearbook. The staff must learn how to make layouts, crop pictures, and take photographs. When deadlines approach it is often necessary to spend extra time during the evening completing pages. In order to receive the Athenian on time it is essential that all deadlines are met. Fundraisers are another important part of every yearbook staff. These people are responsible for a variety of activities. The student council plans activities throughout the year which will benefit the student body. Each year student council holds a spirit week. This year they also sponsored assemblies and dances. Regular student council meetings are held in room 108 in order to plan activities and insure smooth operations within the AHS student council. Spirit Week, Homecoming, and the Christmas Ball are just three examples of such activities. This year we also had the opportunity to host two exchange students. The festivities began with a parade featuring the queen candidates and various class and club floats. The highlight of the day occured when football captains, Mike Adams and Kevin Maslin crowned Lisa Shantillo the queen for 1987. Lisa was escorted by John Brooks of Sayre. Also on the court were Kate Haggerty, Trudy Kepner, Lisa Logrando, Heidi Merritt and Susan Riley. The day was topped with an exciting 19-6 victory over Waverly. Betty’s parents had just came into some money and were giving a party at a newly purchased house in the city. When Betty’s friend, Elmer Hicks arrived things really started to happen. There was an attempted murder and a valuable necklace was stolen from Mr. Bixby’s pocket. After an investigation was done it was determined that the butler did it with the help of a second story man (Andrew Grimes). While in the United States, Tarnya stayed with the Gee, Mazza, and Day families. She had the opportunity to tour several U.S. states and part of Canada. She also had her first experience with snow which she loved. At AHS Tarnya participated in many activities such as track, cross country, swimming, chorus, and Teaogan. She was also the 1987 Christmas ball queen. Tarnya’s nicknames included Skippy and Kookuburra”. Tarnya spent the first half of her stay with the class of 1987 and participated in their graduation ceremony. She plans to return to the U.S. for their fifth year reunion. The second half of her visit, she spent as a member of the class of 1988. Now in Australia, Tarnya is attending a university pursuing a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology and Acting. Tarnya enjoyed her stay in the U.S. as we enjoyed giving her a taste of real American life. With the start of the new school year we had the pleasure of welcoming Debby Rotteveel to our school. Debby was our Rotary exchange student from Noordwijkerwoot, Holland. Debby's stay in Athens was cut short due to a death in her family. Debby did return to the U.S. but chose to go to Florida instead of returning to our town. While in Athens, Debby stayed with the Elsbree family. At AHS she participated in Volleyball, Teaogan, and Athenian. We all enjoyed Debby’s stay with us. Even though it was short, we still have many fond memories. Debby Rotteveel 128 Debby and her American host, Julie Elsbree. Kim Gee — Class of 1989 Kim Gee, a member of the class of 1989, has spent her junior year as an exchange student in Finland. Kim has written the following letter telling of her trip and experiences. Terveiset Suomesta! Greetings from Finland. I’m living here in a place called Metsakyia (translated as forest village”) It’s a nice little place about 40 km from the capital city of Helsinki. I attend a school of about 300 kids in three grades. The school system is different and quite difficult. I study languages and arts, mostly. At this time here we have alot of snow and really cold temperatures. The people here are crazy about winter sports, so we do alot of skiing and skating. They have this really nice traditional thing called sauna which is very relaxing. I introduced chocolate chip cookies to them and I got blood pancakes in return — not exactly a fair exchange . . . but it’s been a fantastic time anyway. Kim will be returning to AHS for her senior year. 129 Whal a nice smile Tarnya. Carrie Crowned Queen Sophomore, Carrie Vandemark 1988 Wrestling Queen The Court Juniors Kim Donovan Lisa Green Carla Worden On February 6, 1988, Carrie Vandemark was crowned wrestling queen. For the first time ever, the wrestling team sponsored a queen crowning. Any class, team, or club was able to nominate a candidate. The queen’s court included Tonia Millard, Lee Pokego, Kim Donovan, Lisa Green, Carla Worden, Kate Haggerty, Esther Oakley, and Jenny Stirrat. Each candidate was escorted by a member of the wrestling team. Seniors Kate Haggerty Esther Oakley Jenny Stirrat Freshmen Tonia Millard Lee Pokego 130 It’s Not All Fun and Games . . . Alexa and Patty show their sisterly love. Everyone hates to put up with their brothers and sisters at home, but what about those who have to go to school with them too? Many of us have this situation in our life and it does have its disadvantages. If a person happens to get in trouble, their brother or sister can't wait to get home and tell their parents. Also if your brother or sister is a little strange sometimes a person doesn’t like to admit to the relation. There are advantages, of course. If your brother or sister drives, you can get a ride to school or if you happen to get in a fight, surely your brother or sister would be on your side. The worst thing about having my brother in the same school is having him tell my family everything I do wrong. — Julie Johnson The worst thing about having my sister in the same school is hearing what she does, from all my friends. — Tama Smith The worst part about having my brother in the same school is I have to see him all day and the best thing is if he wants, he can help me with any problems I have concerning school. — Rosemary Murphy A very popular thing, these days, is to have an after school job. For some people its just babysitting, and for others its office jobs at the I.R. or I.B.M. McDonald's, Burger King, and other fast food places are popular places for jobs, as well as many of the local grocery and drug stores. For most students, having a job is to earn their own spending money. Many people work to save money for college or other types of education. There are the few that help their parents with bills and other necessities. I got a job to get some spending money. — Karen Warn-pole I got a job because I was sick of sitting home and because its a good excuse to make me feel useful. — Mary Simpson The best part about my job is no one sees me working. — Kari Palmer The worst part about my job is having to check out groceries for my friends parents. — Esther Oakley The worst part about my job is having to mop floors. — Michelle Mathews Brenda working at P C. 132 Just Most Of The Time!!! I like to get out of the valley on weekends. — Nicole Shabazian I like to go to dances or the movies on weekends. — Carl Thompson I like to find something destructive to do on weekends. — Colin Cole On weekends I like to party with my friends. — Brenda McCarty On weekends I like to go 4-wheeling. — Eddie King I like to watch VCR movies on weekends. Christina Warner The biggest thing about turning 16, is being able to get a driver’s license. To get a drivers permit, you must go to Towanda and take an oral traffic test. After you get your permit, the “pleasure” of having your parents teach you to drive comes. Then, when your parents feel you are ready, the big day finally arrives. You’re going to take your test! Everyone always seems to be a little nervous, but most do pass their test. Some, however, must return a second or even a third time to pass. The worst part about taking my drivers test was being nervous. — Rosemary Murphy The hardest thing about driving was learning not to wreck. — Tina Vanderpool The worst part about learning to drive was having my brother teach me. — Lori Waltman The best part about getting my license is being able to go to the mall whenever I want. — Roberta Bell We're all ready to go cruising!! Tina and Karen at a wrestling match. Everyone looks forward to the weekends to get a break from school life. There are lots of things to do, such as going to dances, the movies or just hanging out with friends at McDonald’s or other popular places. Depending on the time of the year there is a variety of sporting events to go to and show a little school spirit. Of course, there are always the numerous parties that are held anytime, for any occasion. Another fun thing to do is go to the mall to shop or just hang out with friends. In the spring, things really get wild, with everyone awaiting the end of school. 133 What’s Happening___ At AHS I With Fads and Fashion As part of Homecoming, the traditional Spirit Week was held October 12-16. Sponsored by the Student Council, the week started out with college insignia and sweat day. On Tuesday students had a chance to dress as nerds. Wednesday was hat, sunglasses, and lollipop day. On Thursday students could purchase a slave for the day. For Friday twin and triplet day was held. A day where students dressed alike. It was also blue and white day. The week ended with a pep rally sponsored by the football cheerleaders. On October 31, the Student Council sponsored a Halloween Dress-up day. This day gave students and teachers a chance to dress up in their favorite costume. Everything from ghosts and witches to a piece of pizza were seen. Teachers as well as students enjoyed this day and hope to keep it going. December 16-18, S.A.D.D. awareness week was held. On Wednesday the group sold rosebuds. Thursday was “white out Day. At various times during the day, a person's face was painted white and that person had to remain dead” for two periods. On Friday, Hershey kisses, with the message Don’t kiss your life away , were handed out to each student. All this was held in conjunction with the Christmas Ball. There is a new look in clothes this year. Washed denim is the new in” thing. This gives your clothes the worn faded look, instead of the new dark Ej look These washed items go from jackets and shirts, in all lengths, to jeans and skirts. There are also hats and sneakers to round out your ward ' robe of denim. Alf, a space alien from Melmac, has become very popular this year. Alf has a TV show on NBC which is in the top ten ratings. Alf is known for his charm and his hatred of cats. The cuddly creature has become a merchandising success in selling Alf dolls and T-shirts. Spuds Mackenzie, being the original party animal, is the mascot for one of America’s biggest beer companies. Sweatshirts and T-shirts depicting Spuds, as well as stuffed Spuds, are very popular. Many people want Spuds banned because they feel he is bringing drinking to the younger generations. In the News In the past year, there has been much controversy over pit bulls. There have been numerous reports of pit bull attacks and about how difficult they are to handle. Pit Bulls are mainly used as guard dogs. Many people are afraid of these dogs because of their temper and feel something must be done. 134 In Sports Top Ten Songs 1. Could've Been 2. Seasons Change 3. I Want to Be Your Man 4. Hungry Eyes 5. Mrs. Reilly, new yearbook advisor. This year there has been a variety of new changes and things added at AHS. With the departure of Mr. Pokego, it brought a new French teacher, Mrs. Patrician and a new Athenian advisor, Mrs, Reilly. A new physical education system, of each grade taking gym for nine weeks in a row, was introduced. Also the district started operating under a new computerized system which brought many changes such as a different style report card. These changes have really added something to our school this year. Mrs. Patrician, new French teacher. Many people may not realize what an important role advertisements play in producing our yearbook. Without the extra money obtained from local merchants the cost of our yearbook would be considerably higher. Beginning in September, Athenian members Mark Noel and Leo Miller began visiting businesses in search of potential advertisers. Many other staff members volunteered their time for an afternoon of selling ads in the fall. The outcome of these efforts are detailed in the following pages. The entire Athenian staff would like to thank the businesses for helping to support the theme of this section, We've got money. DEFRAHN STUDIO OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER 1988 ATHENIAN G.E.
