Carlos came to America in early September and plans to leave at the end of July. Upon returning to Venezuela, he will attend a Catholic University in Argentina. Carlos hopes for a career in medicine. While here at Athens High, Carlos enjoyed our sports with an emphasis on football. He also focused on baseball which he plays in Venezuela. Carlos enjoyed the courses offered here at Athens, American Cultures being his favorite. He also studied Basic Speech, Health, Sports Literature, and Expository Writing, along with taking a semester of typing. Carlos remarked that he liked the teachers here at Athens High, especially Mr. Weaver. We all wish Carlos a safe return to Venezuela and the best of luck in the future. 32 Charles Kent, a member of the senior class, recently spent a year in Finland. During his stay in Finland, Charles was hosted by three families. The first lived in an apartment in Kuopio. His “brother and sister” spoke English while his “parents” spoke only Finnish. The second family with which he stayed lived outside of Kuopio. This home he shared with two brothers. His third host family has three children, the oldest being an exchange student in Virginia. While away from home, Charles visited Linda Manning, the Sayre exchange student in Sweden. He also visited Sweden in March and The Soviet Union in April. The latter of these trips was made with other exchange students. In addition to being a downhill skier, he has also learned to cross country ski. This adventure proved to be a memorable experience. He also learned to ice skate and play ice hockey while in Finland. He has had the opportunity to play his bass violin in a conservatory orchestra. The orchestra gave an hour concert that was taped for Finnish Television and Charles was very excited about that. Charles studied English, Physics, and Finnish in additon to mandatory gym classes. Their system is different from ours, for the teacher, not the student passes from class to class. Charles was accepted under the “early decision” program at Syracuse University and was also accepted at Case Western Reserve and plans to enroll at Case Western in bio-medical engineering. We look forward to seeing Charles again and wish him much luck in his future. 33 CHRISTMAS BALL Surprise Wendy! The retirement of the four teachers on these pages, Robert Schrier, Donald Riker, Ted Keir, and Gladys Reeves, is such an event. Taking notice of the retirements themselves is an easy task. There is more to it, however. These teachers represent well over 100 years of service to the students of the District. Each is unique in the type of contribution that he she made to the overall development of the students of our school and each leaves a personal impression on the school community that never ceases to affect those with whom contact was made. Each, for his own reason, chose a particular field to enter and to teach. From that initial entry, other interests and contributions developed, enabling these teachers to further influence and guide their students. Each year, each one of these teachers gained more and more insights into the workings of students and willingly shared and used the skills and knowledge to the betterment of all. The CLASS OF 1984 joins their fellow faculty members in wishing them the best of luck in their retirements. 79 1983 FOOTBALL Front row, 1 to r — R. Babcock, L. Blakeman, B. Norton, R. Hatch, R.
