t ATHENIAN 1980 Athens Area High School Athens Pennsylvania Volume 139 Where The Waters Mingling Softly, Cast A Silvery Chain, Round Our Peaceful Little Athens, Alma Mater Reigns. Sing Her Praise In Swelling Chorus, Raise Her To The Sky, Hail, To Thee Our Alma Mater, Hail, Dear Athens High. 2 J What’s going on? 4 I In this, the beginning of a new decade, we like to look forward to the future — to the things we have to accomplish. We look forward to new beginnings. However, before there can be a future, there must be a past. This, the eve of the future seems the most fitting time to reflect upon the past. We have to remember the sad times before we can appreciate prosperity. We have to remember our youth before we can venture into the role of being old. We have to remember our fears and weaknesses before we can meet our future strong, and without doubts. When all this is accomplished, then we can move on to a new tomorrow. The graduating class of 1980, as well as the classes yet to follow, is your future. You are your future. Together you can make dreams come true. With that in mind, the Athenian staff would like to present your future . . THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1980 . . . 5 Steve Anthony Bruce Babcock Jeffrey A. Ammerman Ralph Babcock JoAnn R. Her Father, a lawyer, and her mother, an elementary teacher, live with the rest of her family in South America, in Columbia's capitol, Bagota. Angela is here through the Rotary Exchange Program. At the beginning of her stay here, Angela stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Roger Smith and family, of RD 2, Athens. Later she moved in with the family of Mr. and Mrs. John Steadle, also of RD 2, Athens. Angela’s activities include Concert Choir, Reflections, Swimming, and working on the Teaogan. After graduation, Angela plans to attend college, majoring in translation, and social communications. Angela had touched the lives of everyone who knows her. The students of AHS will miss her. COLUMBIA BRINGS US A NEW FRIEND. It takes a lot of courage to go through high school. It seems like you’ve got pressures from all sides. Some make it and some don't. One of the members of the senior class has made it through the struggles of everyday life, plus more, with the kind of courage that the rest of us only dream of having. Bill Spencer has had to deal with a visual impairment for all his life. But his blindness hasn’t stopped him from leading an active and somewhat successful life. Bill has held down various singing engagements, plus produced a record. Bill would like to continue his music, and hopes to someday make it to the top. With his fine talent, it's possible he may. We would like to wish Bill the best of luck in anything he chooses to do. We know he will be the best. 48 MR. WEAVER A BIG THANKS Graduation. We all look forward to it. It's the biggest, most important moment in most of our lives. It takes a lot to make graduation a success. It takes planning, work, training, and a good leader to get everything done. Mr. Weaver is that leader, and has thus far proved to be the best person for the job. He's had a lot of practice at it — he's been in charge of graduation for about ten years. He seems to like it, though it's not all fun and games. Mr. Weaver is in charge of the planning, training of the students, checking to make sure everything goes all right, generally of graduation and the Baccalaureate ceremonies. But he feels his most important job is the praying that mother nature co-operates, and holds off the rain, at least until graduation is over. He feels that it’s not hard to get co-operation from the students. He says that if they act up, he just starts screaming and yelling, and doing everything possible to straighten the kids up. And apparently it works. Graduation always turns out to be the great event we all look forward to. 49 Chris Abert Brent Alexander Brian Alexander Tim Allen Tim Anderson Chris Anthony Chris Babcock Maureen Ball Paul Barrock Diane Beatty Julie Beirne Valerie Bennett Jodi Besecker Eddy Bligh Gary Bradley Scott Bradley 50 Darlene Breese Cindy Brown Tony Campbell Mike Canavan Connie Carlin Ted Chacona Patti Champion Kathy Chantillo Randy Clink Mary Collins 51 Tom Collins Wylie Congdon Alan Cook Mark Coston Amy Covey Ken Cramer Janet Kreiser Hope Cron Mike Crossett Faye, Steve, Linda and Bob doing what they do best. This year, a member of our senior class went abroad through the Rotary Exchange Program. On Aug. 10, 1979, Mary Jo Haggerty boarded a plane to Brazil. She is living in the city of Ribeirao Preto in the country of Sao Paulo, where she is attending a private school. Mary Jo says that the 12 courses which she is taking are very different, compared to the courses here. Mary Jo has enjoyed going to beautiful beaches and private clubs to which her host family belongs, but still she gets a little homesick, and appreciates your letters. Mary Jo will be returning home in July, 1980. t O S. i i j - t - j.i • HB£i AO PM TO - BBASIt INSTITUTO SANTA UISUIA $ o Jot 91) CIP 11100 „ s ' ? [RPC] .. . Ir.V. a , A%' S'rc I-:..' C.Vd-' fcx.J . V.I.P’S Walter Hutz, Superintendent John Barnyak Herbert Halsted Thomas Jenkins Dear Seniors: Many of you are anxious to assume a new role in the adult world; some are perhaps a bit frightened or wary of what the future holds. All of you, I’m sure, are eager to express your individuality in exercising your talents, whatever they may be. Hopefully your years of development within the Athens School System have given you the maturity and academic achievement to face your new experiences with confidence and selfassurance. I’m sure I am expressing the feelings of the entire educational staff when I offer my sincere congratulations for your past accomplishments and best wishes for your future endeavors, whether they involve furthering your education in a formal insititution or immediately taking your place in the current world of business. Society challenges you to meet its demands, and we feel certain the graduating class of 1980 will meet the challenge. Walter Hutz Superintendent Robert Beirne. Solicitor Norrene Farr Secretary Laurence Kingsley It is a sincere pleasure to have this opportunity to wish you, the Senior Class of 1980, success in your future endeavors. As you prepare to enter the adult world, always remember your responsibilities to yourselves, your neighbors, your community, and your nation to provide the same kinds of educational opportunities for future generations as were given to you — For education is the basis of survival for our democratic society. Whether or not you attend higher institutions of learning, I hope that your education will not cease but will become an ever-continuing process throughout your lives. Thomas L. There are many words that can be used to describe Scott Webster. A senior, Scott has contributed greatly to the school, and to the sport of wrestling. Scott has had a very full wrestling career, stemming from early childhood. His record is proof of his outstanding abilities. Scott has placed first in Sectionals in his sophomore, junior, and senior years, second in districts in his sophomore year, first in his junior year, and fourth this year. In Regionals, Scott placed third in his sophomore, and first in his junior year. He has also placed an impressive second and third place in States in his sophomore and junior year. With his 102 victories, 12 losses, and 2 draws, Scott can also add to his record the title of Outstanding Wrestler, which he acquired twice in tourney competition — once in Regionals, in 1978, and again last year in Districts. He has also been a three time Valley X-mas Tourney champ, and two time Spencerport Tourney champ, coming in second this year. Scott intends on continuing his wrestling career at Drexel or Penn State. Scott's career hasn’t been flawless, but he's shown us what pride and determination can do.
