Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1973 volume:

1973 ATHENIAN ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA 2 3 DO YOU FEEL THAT THE WATERGATE AFFAIR WOULD HAVE AFFECTED THE OUTCOME OF THE ELECTION IF BROUGHT UP EARLIER? 7 think to a degree it would, hut Nixon would have won ... “ Yes, I think it would have affected the election because I’m pretty sure that people wouldn V have wanted Nixon if they found out he was involved in something like this ... “No, 1 don't think it would, Nixon might be involved and he might not. For all we know, the Democrats might be pulling this for publicity. WHO WERE YOU FOR AND WHY? “ was for Nixon because he needed a chance to finish what he had started ... 1 was for Nixon because he had stable plans and a better idea of how to stop the war in Vietman.” WHY DO THINK GEORGE MCGOVERN LOST SO BADLY? “McGovern didn't stand a chance. If he gave everyone a 1,000 dollar bill, he would have eventually run the country into bankruptcy ... He didn't have good looks. 8 DO YOU THINK THE VIETMAM PEACE AGREEMENT WILL LAST? ‘7 hope so ... It looks as if right now the chances of it's lasting are thin . .. No, I don't, 'cause already Vietnam has broken the truce ... Yes. think it will last as long as no one advances . .. Yes, Definitely, it has to, too many lives have been wasted ... I don't Really Know . . . President Nixon knew what he was doing so it has to last . . . 'To me. I think it will be just like Korea and we will always have troops there, no matter what the government says. There will undoubt fully be troops there for an eternity . . . No. but it has to ... Not really. It's a nice dream, but one can’t trust the North Vietnamese to keep their word For that matter, one can’t trust the South Vietnamese to keep their word either. So we are sort of up a tree . . . No I think it will stop and we will have another war” . . . Yes . . . I’m expecting another war anytime” . . Yes, for a while anyway. DO YOU THINK HENRY KISSINGER KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING? Henry Kissinger was only following President Nixon’s directions. so if President Nixon knows what he is doing, then Kissinger knew what he was doing, so it all comes down to whether or not you think Nixon knows what he is doing and I don't ... Yes, I think Henry knew what he was doing, he is a good foreign policy man. He planned his peace talks very carefully, and he knew what he was doing . .. If the peace lasts in Vietnam, then say yes, he knew what he was doing. If peace doesn’t come about and last then I say no. he didn’t know what he was doing . . . Mr. Kissinger is an extremely intelligent man and think he knew what he was doing . .. President Nixon guided him so I think that by the help of Nixon he knew what he was doing” . . . Henry Kissinger knew just what he was doing. President Nixon didn’t have very much to do with anything. I think all the credit goes to Kissinger. He did a really great thing. He got US out of the Vietnam war. It is too bad the peace won't last for the Vietnamese people, but at least our men aren’t being killed. DO YOU THINK PRESIDENT NIXON COULD HAVE PULLED OUR MEN OUT SOONER? Yes ... No. I think he did good to get them out when he did ... Well, maybe more than he did .. . No. it was hard enough getting them out late even” ... I still think McGovern was the best man for the job. He could have gotten them out sooner ... No, just because . . . Sure he could have. Because there was no honor in the peace now. It could have been ended the exact same way 10 years ago. Nothing was accomplished . .. I’m not sure. It seems awfully fishy that the 'peace' was arrived at just before election time. 9 Getting It Together is what education is all about. This theme seems especially appropriate in Athens in 1972-1973.
