DEDICATED k DR J. CUE ION i7' ■AUGUST 25 9o Doctor J. C. Lynch Dr. J. C. Lynch, a native of Athens and a graduate of Athens High School, has had a deep, continuing interest in the youth of this area. He served on the board of education for twenty-two years—during the majority of these years he was president of the board. The accomplishments during these years were extensive. The area contained in the Athens system expanded from Athens Boro and Athens Township to include Ulster, Sheshe-quin, Smithfield, and Ridgebury. Three new elementary buildings were constructed, the present Athens High School was constructed, and the swimming pool named in Dr. Lynch’s honor was added. Expansion of the curriculum has been equally extensive. In appreciation of his contribution to education in the area, Dr. Lynch was honored by the Athens Area Education Association, the Athens Area Board of Education, and other citizens at a testimonial dinner April 14, 1972. RICHARD MARVIN—Superintendent of Schools MILES RAKER—Assistant Superintendent Seated: Dr. Ralph Gregory, Celia Arnold, Harlan Rowe, Robert Fraley Standing: Herbert Halstead, Laurence Kingsley. AYER-Reading MARGARET PRUYNE-Library 10 11 EDITH HINE-Nurse In Memory of Jane Hair For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then you shall truly dance. The Prophet Kahlil Gibran 12 Faculty MARIE BEAN-U. S. A gingerbread house was baked by Jan Kowa-lek and placed on a table. The other gingerbread house was built by Mike Callear and put in the middle of the dance floor. The constructed gingerbread house was decorated with candy, cookies, and snow. The windows of the ball room were decorated with snow to make different Christmas pictures. Music was provided by the “Crimson Sensation,” a local group. About halfway through the ball, Ann Weller was crowned Queen of the Ball by Jim Bowen, President of the Senior class. The Queen was picked by Jim Bowen, who pulled her name out of a box filled with senior girls’ names. 22 Seniors DAVID ADAMS PAULA ALEXANDER DAVID ADAMS-Student Council 10, 11, 12; Photo Club 10. 11; Athenian 11; Varsity Club 11. 12; Track 10; Swimming 10; Golf 11. The junior class decorated the gym nicely with tables located behind false walls made of multi-colored streamers. There was a garden in the center of the gym, where Queen Bonnie Watson, escorted by Bill Fraley, was crowned by junior class president Jim Alexander. Spotlights filtered through a false ceiling made of multi-colored streamers. The turnout for the prom was very good with over ninety-five couples attending, even though the custom of allowing seniors free admission was broken. A new junior class advisor, Joe Thompson, sponsored this very successful prom. 64 Youth Activities Department The Youth Activities Department, directed by Ken Oakes, is the only year round program at Athens. During the winter, Y.A.D.’s program includes recreation, basketball, and wrestling; evening swims for students; dances, including the annual Miss Recreation Dance, all featuring name groups; after school cheerleading and majorette lessons for grade school girls; and an evening ceramics class. During the summer, Y.A.D. has a very large program which includes full use of the J. C. Lynch Pool for lessons, recreational swims, and a summer competitive swim team. Y.A.D. also sponsors the summer playground activities which include arts and crafts; wood shop for both boys and girls; music lessons; miniature golf; tennis; competitive sports; cooking classes; a concession stand; and busing of children from outlying areas for the playground. A federal program joined with Y.A.D. in sponsoring a new pageant telling of the settling of the Tioga Point area. This pageant will be presented during the summer of '72. 65 Stage Guild Play The first play presented by Stage Guild this year, Alas Babylon, was a three-act drama directed by Mr. Paul Weaver. This was a play telling what life might be like after an atomic hole-cast. Alas Babylon takes its audience from the pre-blast days through the post-blast months, almost a year in all. The play had a very large cast and crew and was very well presented. Play Contest For their second production, Stage Guild members performed an unusual type of play. The sophomore, junior, and senior members competed with each other in presenting a one-act play contest. Each play was different and chosen by the students. The sophomore play, Not My Cup of Tea. was chosen winner by the audience vote. This play was about two spinsters and their mother who tried to kill each other for their money. The junior play, If Girls Asked Boys for Dates. showed what life might be like if girls were dominant instead of men as it is now. The senior play, Shotgun Wedding, told about life and love in the hills. All three plays were comedies and very well presented. The students did all of the work, including directing and producing. Mary Carpenter was crowned queen with Kathy Kunkel and Linda Fuller serving on her court. 74 75 Spring Concerts On May the 5th, Mrs. Berresford’s Senior High Concert Choir, Girls Ensemble, and Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus presented their annual program. This concert was opened by the Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus, who sang a collection of songs, including a group devoted to animals such as The Frog , The Yak , “The Hippopotamus”, and The Polar Bear. Then the Girls Ensemble presented a program of light, popular music, including Leaving on a Jet Plane , and Both Sides Now.” After a brief intermission the Concert Choir walked down the two main aisles singing It’s a Grand Night for Singing. Other songs were The Laughing Song , featuring Sue Luchaco, Terry Wolf, Dan Simpson, and Robert Williams, Hosanna, with soloist Ed Ropp, and The Pledge of Allegiance”, with Mark Kreamer, and Requiem for the Masses.” This last song had special accompaniment by Dave Daniels on the drums and David Par-frey on the trumpet. Piano accompanists were Shari Bender, Carol Fontana, Sheri Nagle, and Romona Yale. On the night of May 20th, the Treble Aires and Boys Ensemble, under the direction of Mrs. Joan Berresford, presented a spring concert. The Treble Aires, dressed in peasant skirts and blouses, opened the program with a madrigal and four light songs. The Boys Ensemble then came on with five modern songs followed by an intermission. A trio composed of Sheri Heaps, Les Bresee, and Mark Krea-mer sang a sentimental song. Following this, the combined ensemble presented an Italian number and a medley which featured soloists Beth Campbell and Hope Bresee. The program closed with a light contemporary song. Accompanists were Carol Fontana, Hope Bresee, and Doug Vale. Refreshments were provided by the Home Economics Department. After the program, gifts were presented to Mrs. Berresford and Carol Fontana. 77 Senior Band The Senior Band, under the direction of William Allford and assisted by Robert Rogers and Harold Smith, presented an entirely new outlook this year. New white pants were added to the uniforms, new routines were worked out, and new music was prepared. The majorettes and color-guards also received new uniforms. Much practice and organization went into the presentation of half-time shows and indoor concerts. In addition to the regular concerts, an exchange concert was given by Athens at Oneida, N.Y., and Oneida at Athens. For the ninth through twelfth grade members of Senior Band it was a busy and exciting year. FLUTE: Allen. Barbara Bender. Sheri Campbell. Carol Gabriel. Marianne Havens. Gary Morris. Margo Tippett. They also play during intermissions of concerts. String Ensemble The String Ensemble, under the direction of Miss Kraynok, is a new organization this year. The group, which is still in its building stage, consists of about thirty seventh grade members who play string bass and violin. All the violin players own their own instruments while the school furnishes the others. This group meets twice a week and each member is given a lesson once a week. Besides their public concert on May 17th, members are often asked to entertain certain organizations throughout the year. Row 1: G. VanFleet, N. Rogers. G. Gregory, D. Adams, L. Eastham, J. The junior band opened the program with March of the Goobers,” Trumpet Voluntary, and Air for Band.” Then they performed Great Gate of Kiev”—a Russian piece, and “Snow Bird”—a popular modern tune. The senior band appeared next with Parada Espa-nola”—a Spanish march, and Sounds of Carpenters —a mixture of favorite carpenter songs. Then a trumpet trio—David Parfrey, Dean Young, and Bill Keir—performed Buglers Holiday. Other soloists were Dave Daniels in a rock number— Alla Barocco, and Tom Warren on the tuba in Puff the Magic Dragon. After several other numbers, the concert was concluded with Sousa's “Stars and Stripes Forever.” 97 Eighth Grade V. Allen W. Allen M. Alpaugh D. Babcock P. Babcock J. Bailey S. Bailey G. Bair J. The show began with a processional from the back of the auditorium by the choral members while singing 'Silent Night.' Each member carried a lighted candle. This processional was made up of members from the Concert Choir, Boys' Ensemble, and Treble-Aires. The Concert Choir sang three arrangements to open the program. Then the Boys' Ensemble and Treble-Aires sang several selections. After these songs were presented, the Concert Choir again sang three more selections. A present and flowers were presented to the conductress, Mrs. Berresford, during the program by the three performing groups. The recessional was in the same form as the processional with the choruses walking out of the auditorium singing 'Silent Night.’ 104 This year on December 17 in the auditorium the junior high presented a Christmas Concert. It featured the Seventh and Eighth grade Chorus, the Ninth Grade Chorus, Junior High Band, and Special String Section. Both choruses were under the direction of Mrs. Joan Berresford, and represented a major part of the program. The Junior High Band, led by a new associate director, Mr. Harold Smith, presented a program of new and old Christmas songs. The string section, new this year, was a special feature at the concert. Under the direction of Miss Sheila Kraynok, this group presented a medley of seventeenth century Christmas carols. Piano accompanists for the choruses were Shari Bender, Helen Haueisen, and Ramona Yale. 105 Seventh Grade R. Arnold J. Babcock S. Baggerly L. Bailey R. Bailey D. Barber P. Baxter P. Belcher R. The officers of the Junior High Science Club, under the direction of Mrs. Wilkinson, are James Mathers, president; Charles Schrader, vice-president; Pat Wolf, secretary; and James Thomas, treasurer. The members of this club worked with laboratory equipment in experiments, participated in the valley glass recycling project, and took several trips to local places of interest. Sponsor of the Senior High Science Club is Mrs. Jean Durrand, and the officers elected are Robin Danielsky, president; Danny Knowles, vice-president; Mary-lou Williams, secretary; and Lynn Daniels, treasurer. Each member of this club was assigned a project on any aspect of science; this project was then presented at the Science Fair. The members also went on trip, including one to the Robert Packer Hospital. Both clubs found this year educational and enjoyable. Row 1: A. Miller. P. Hunter, D. Morrison, A. Rau-pers, J. McGrath, M. Gem and Mineral Club Athens High School Gem and Mineral Club had as officers this past year: Dan Walters, president; Dale Jarvis, vice-president; Rose Marie Cheresnowsky, secretary. As a group this club has gone on field trips to the Barclay Mountains area, Monroeton area, Canton area, and Ralston area. The members have also visited several mineral collectors in the valley. In order to become a member of this club, one must express the reason he wants to join, be invited by a member of the club, and be able to share interests in minerals. At each meeting there are door prizes, usually minerals. There are also reports, films, and special topics on mineralogy, geology, paleontology, Indian artifacts, and the tumbling and polishing of rocks. In spring of 1972 the club participated in the Che-Hanna Gem Mineral Show in South Waverly. Here at school Mr. Keir, faculty advisor, has put displays in the showcase in the hall by the library for students to view as they pass. 113 FFA Future Farmers of America, more commonly known as F.F.A., is a national organization for vocational agriculture students in grades nine through twelve. F.F.A. meets once a month during activity period. This years officers are: Gilbert Frisbie, president; Mike Callear, vice-president; Duane Luchaco, secretary; Gary Rabenold, treasurer; Dennis Scrivener, sentinel; and Charles Blaasch, reporter. F.F.A. advised by Mr. Leonard, is one of the most active clubs at Athens. The members gain valuable experience in farming by participating in county F.F.A. contests. Competition in these contests includes dairy products, land judging, tractor driving, and cattle judging. Points are given F.F.A. members for bringing in pests which they have killed. At the end of the year money prizes are given to the three members with the highest number of points. Recreational activities include swimming and skating parties, hayrides, and basketball games with F.F.A. clubs of other schools. Row 1: R. Rogers. G. Rabenold. M. Sabitus, G. Frisbie. R. Brennan. Its purpose is to prepare its members for future aquatics and teaching. Although this club has been in existence only three years, it has many activities and plans. At swim meets, members of this club are timers, rope holders, announcers and other important job holders. Among the activities offered by Aquatic Leadership this year were a junior-senior lifesaving class and a workshop. The workshop was an exchange of teaching ideas between members of Aquatic Leadership and visiting teachers. The club’s members also drafted a constitution, designed bathing suit patches to designate themselves, and purchased club jackets. These are only a few of the activities with which Aquatic Leadership is involved. Row 1: M Wells, B. Johnson. P. Moore. D. Gable. C. Lattimer. G. Havens. Row 2: A Weller. N. Thomas. L. Mrs. Alger, as sponsor and coordinator, has worked with editor Barbara Rosh and assistant editor Candy Lattimer in presenting the real spirit of Athens High School. Both business staff and literary staff worked hard throughout the year to make the Athenian a success. The business staff conducted patron drives and held sales to give financial support, and the literary staff improves the book each year by coming up with new ideas in style, writing, pictures, and presentation. This year a representative of the publishing company came to some of the meetings to give the staff ideas on how to improve and create a good yearbook. Row 1: B. VanSlyke, R. Whipple. M. Baird, K. The club began the year by electing their officers: president, Sue Sackett; vice-president, Andy Tappan; secretary, Barbara Harris; and treasurer, Melissa Morningstar. The remaining members were grouped into five committees which decided the activities of the club. The first committee suggested ideas for the library bulletin board on special weeks of the year, such as book week and Thanksgiving. The second committee was in charge of the show case. This committee presented many interesting displays. The trip committee planned an excursion to Syracuse in order to watch Disney on Parade. The special events committee planned the annual tea for the faculty. Each member devoted one or more periods a week to help in the library. They worked to keep the shelves straightened and the books mounted and mended. Row 1: A. Graham, T. Wheeler, C. Mills. A. Miller, V. Gray, A. McCann, A. Fenton, R. Garrison, L. Lake, K. Malone. National Honor Society is a group of students in eleventh and twelfth grades who are selected by a group of their teachers on the basis of their scholastic ability, citizenship, and leadership. Their sponsor is Mr. Rogers of the History Department; this year's officers are Terry Wolf, president; Steve Crawford, vice president; Vicki Shaffer, secretary; and Judy Hughes, treasurer. The activities of the year included establishing an award for a junior high student with the best overall grades, raising money to give educational support to a foreign student, and picking two seniors from their club to compete in the National Honor Society Scholarship program. 121 imr Teaogan Since 1950, Athens students have published a school newspaper. For the last three years Mr. Gregory has sponsored the Teaogan and chosen the staff on the basis of articles students have written and submitted to him. The Teaogan, containing news, sports, fiction, and articles pertaining to school life, is published four times a year. This paper is organized in sections with sectional editors who are directed by the chief editor, Vicki Shaffer. There is also a business aspect to the Teaogan. As a moneymaking project to support the paper and to give the seniors a dinner at the end of the year, members sold pens, stationery, and coloring tablecloths. The drive proved successful. Row 1: E. This year's Senior High Student Council has made many changes. The officers, Lee Hartjen, president; Alissa DuBois, vice-president; Alan Sherbo, treasurer; and Bonnie Watson, secretary, all worked hard with new ideas. A new trophy case and a save-the-children fund were on the agenda. The council planned a vandalism campaign in hopes that the school will be the same as the one we once had. Senior High Student Council set up committees to check out new problems and ideas. A new item within the school was the water coolers. They were installed in the summer of 1971 through the effort of the Student Council. The council also set up a new telephone in the Student Lounge. We at Athens High School are lucky to have this Student Council. 123 Junior French Club The Junior High French Club, under the guidance of Miss Barbara Fin-nerty, had quite a busy year. The members elected as their officers: president—Margene Chandler, vice-president— Dorene DuBois, secretary—Denise Davis, treasurer—Brenda Bean. Miss Finnerty began the year by teaching the club members the French National Anthem. The club then began collecting money for an honor certificate to be presented to the student in the club with the highest average. The members also accompanied the members of the Senior High French Club on their trip to Quebec on May 10, 11, 12, 13th. These students spent their three days touring the city and seeing many places of interest. In the spring, a banquet was held for all members, bringing an end to their activities for one more year. It is sponsored by Mr. Kleese, who organized the club, and Mr. Wooster, who joined the teaching staff this year. Both teachers are expert bridge players. The club members were taught the fundamentals of bridge at the beginning of the year, and throughout the rest of the year gained valuable experiences and skill playing amateur games. Contract Bridge is open to students in grades seven through twelve, but mostly senior high students have been interested. The members of this club enjoy the opportunity to play bridge and improve their game at the same time. Row 1: G. Stanton. J. Goudreau. L. Goudreau. B Summers. B. Kromelbeln. Row 2: G. Rosh. Any senior high student may join Stage Guild. This year’s officers are: Jim Bowen, president; Terry Wolf, vice president; Suzanne Crowley, secretary; and Debbie Beeman, treasurer. Points gained through participating both on stage and behind the scenes, allow members admission into the International Thespian Society, an honorary group of actors and technicians. Stage Crew is a service organization for the school. Any work involving the stage, including concerts and assemblies, is a job for the Stage Crew. Stage Guild usually performs two plays each year. Along with the three-act play, “Alas Babylon,” the Guild had a one-act play contest among the three grades, which was an unusual feature. Row 1: L. Walter, D. Beeman, C. Robbins. A Fontana. P. The club’s purpose is to promote good sportsmanship and teamplay and interest in sports among the student body. This years' club officers are Rick Henry, president; Steve Crawford, vice-president; John Baird, secretary; and Gary Cron, treasurer. Although most people think this a do nothing club, it is not. Varsity Club is responsible for getting the blazers worn by our athletes. This club sponsors a Homecoming Queen each year. This year Cathy Brittain was queen, with Debbie Pientka and Yvonne Dra-binski as runners-up. Varsity Club also holds an annual picnic at Big Pond. Each member is invited to bring a guest and everyone has a good time. These are just a few of the activities of Varsity Club. Row 1: N. Hessler, J. Gabriel. M Webster, J. Baird. Row 2. R Henry, M. Cheerleaders The Varsity and J.V. Cheerleaders play a big part in athletic competition at Athens. Miss Soprano and Miss Warner make possible the existing Varsity squad, and Miss Peters sponsors the J.V. squad. A large task of the cheerleaders is boosting individual and team morale. These girls practice often and hard for their games. Elected by the squad this year as co-captains of Varsity are Yvonne Drabinski and Judy Hughes. Kathy Kunkel and Sue LaDue, also chosen by their squad, are co-captains of the J.V.’s. Also helping to raise school spirit is the newly formed Pep Club. Miss Soprano selected members for this club from petitions she received. In addition to the N.T.L. Championship, Coach Whitmer was chosen Coach of the Year of the Valley and several members of the team were selected for the Valley All Star Team and for the S.V.I.A.A. All Star Team. Those selected for the Valley All Star Team are John Baird, offensive guard; Rick Henry, offensive and defensive tackle; Alan Sassman, offensive and defensive halfback; Mike Callear, defensive end; and Tim Davidson, defensive end. One lone member of the team was chosen for the S.V.I.A.A. All Star Team—Rick Henry, offensive tackle. Seated: M Callear. T. Davidson. D. Woodburn, S. Crawford. G. Cron. Row 1: R. Northrup. J. Lynch. They won seven games and lost one. The J.V. Football players scored 26 touchdowns this year and were unscored against in six games. During the half time of the J.V.'s first football game, Sharon Baggerly presented a plaque to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rupert from the class of 1974. This plaque was in memory of their son, Charles, who had died last year. Charles was a member of the class of 1974 and a member of the 1970 J.V. Football team. Row 1: S. Swingle, P. Baird. J. The girls had to follow new rules concerning covering zones and the referee's use of hand motions. The girls on the teams received new uniforms this year that were quite nice. Girls Basketball sponsored by Miss Finnerty, appears to be a tough organization to get into. Practice starts with a large group of girls. This group is gradually cut down to 14 Varsity players and 16 J.V. players. The girls are tested in areas which include rebounds, coordination, foul shots and several other things. This whole process takes 3-4 weeks. Also, the girls have adopted new rules that resemble the boy's game very much. Row 1: R. Jones. B. Crawford. D. Uhl. Row 2: Coach Murray, M. Springer, S. Gable, J. The boys were at a disadvantage at the beginning of the season with players out with injuries. However, they did quite well by winning eleven games while losing ten. They placed third in the SVIAA League. As a whole the team scored 1323 points with Paul Gilbert, the highest scorer on the team, scoring 261 of them. Row 1: J. Gabriel. C. Tye. B. Velardo, P. The junior varsity basketball team has had a great season. They have won twelve out of sixteen games, allowing them to be in first place in the S.V.I.A.A. League. The boys have had a long season—practice started early in November, and the last game was February 18 against S.R.U. This year, for the first time, the team was coached by Mr. Scott Taylor, who is a teacher at the Main Elementary School. With his help, and a lot of work, the members of the team have learned a lot about team spirit and sportsmanship. They have also gained experience that will help them in athletic competition. Although the team doesn’t get a trophy, since they are J.V., they deserve their first place honor. 141 Wrestling The members of the Athens Varsity Wrestling Team are the champions of both the NTL and the SVIAA Leagues. Their record in the NTL was 8-0 and in the SVIAA 7-0. The teams overall record was 10-3. The greatest victory for the Athens grapplers was over Troy. This win made them champions of the NTL. To win the SVIAA title, it was necessary for our boys to defeat Sayre, which they did with ease. Next on the agenda were the sectionals. Eleven of the wrestlers went to To-wanda to compete. Athens had only one sectional champ—Steve Swingle at 112 pounds. Steve went on to districts but was defeated. When asked if they were going to win both league titles next year, the returning grapplers answer was a definite yes. Row 1: J. Swingle, R. Blake, M. Robinson. R. Bradley. S. Swingle. D. Rhodes. The team won the District 4, PIAA Championship for the first time. They did not, however, go to state competition due to a bus accident. Captains for the team were rotated from week to week between senior and junior team members. Girls Swimming is a sport in its third year at Athens. This year, Miss Warner, a physical education teacher, became coach. Although the sport has not had a good win-loss record in the past, Miss Warner has worked on building up the team for future years. This year, team captains were Kim Clarke and Kathy Kunkel. Row 1: J Murray, T. Luft, W. Harding. G. Havens, J. Alexander. M. Sherbo, J. Flynn. Row 2: J. King, R. Chandler, W. Nagle, G. King. G. Team pitchers were Jim Farr, Gary Cron, and Paul Gilbert. Jim Farr, a sophomore, set the team record for the most home runs and highest batting average. Alan Sas-sman, a junior, came in second. The team was expected to go on to win the S.V.I.A.A. league title, but did not. Since only two seniors, Gary Cron and Steve Crawford, are lost, a stronger and more experienced team is expected next year. Row 1: J. Callear. J. Farr Row 2: J. Weeks, D. Ball. S. Levering, R. Carl. There were fifteen matches with five boys participating in each match. The members of the team chose whom they wanted to play for Athens in the match. Usually team members with the lowest average were chosen. Besides winning twelve of their fifteen matches, they managed to take record place in the District Four Match and third place in the Mansfield Golf Tournament. In the Mansfield Tournament they defeated the N.Y.S. Champions, E.F.A. Three boys—Pete Law, Dave Traver, and Jerry Alexander-made the All-Star Team. Pete Law was the most outstanding golfer on our team. He was the District Champion and went to the State Match where he placed 45th out of one hundred boys. Row 1: J. Swank Row 2: J. Murray, T. They have hosted four of the meets. The team has practiced every night after school and has shown some good potential. A few of the stronger points of the team are the 100 and 220 yard dashes, the 180 yard low hurdles, the 880 relay, broadjump, javelin, triple jump, and the high jump. Two events were undefeated during the season, the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Jeff Lynch, a senior, broke a school record this year in the 220 with a time of 22 seconds. Row 1: D. Morningstar. J.
