all phases of styles can be seen at athens. girls wear the mini, maxi, midi, pantsuits, jump suits and even hot pants, of course, jeans still are and probably will always be seen, boys can have long hair and wear mod clothes, members of the faculty have taken advantage of the more relaxed mode of dress — women teachers wear pantsuits and men teachers wear bright colored shirts with matching ties, the students and teachers should both be commended for the good taste they have shown in wearing the various current styles. 17

the combined elementary band, consisting of bands from the audrielle lynch school, the main elementary, and the ulster school, under the direction of mr. swetland, opened the spring concert, april 3, 1971. this was followed by the junior band under the direction of mr. allford and the senior band under the direction of mr. swetland. this was the final spring concert for mr. swetland, who is retiring after twenty years of teaching, seventeen of them at athens high school, a graduate of ahs, mr. swetland is a charter member of the band. mr. swetland received his bachelor’s degree from mansfield state college and his master’s from new york university. his first teaching assignment was in huntington mills, Pennsylvania, where he originated a band, after teaching in ripley, new york, he returned to athens to a band consisting of fifty members, under his direction it has grown to more than one hundred and the stage band was instituted. 16

on march 19 and 20 the stage guild engaged in an unique venture. for weeks the specially chosen cast had been preparing their presentation of flowers for alger-non commonly known as Charlie, theater in the round was used for this presentation, because of the nature of the play, it was presented in the audrielle lynch elementary school auditorium, the leading parts were played by jim bowen as Charlie, george lord as dr. strauss, leslie bresee as professor numur, Charles blaasch as burt, gloria kleckner and dave lynch as mother and father, joanne gris-wold as alice, and debbie beeman as norma, many other people — the rest of the cast, the student director, and the various stage crews — contributed to the success of the play. advanced sewing, a one semester course offered to both junior and senior girls consists of instruction in design, textile, and new sewing techniques on an individual basis.
