the theme of the Christmas ball held december 12, 1970 was “this magic season.” the cafeteria was brilliantly decorated with Christmas trees, holly, snowflakes, and tinsel to carry out the theme, sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended the ball, each couple brought a gift to put under the Christmas tree, these gifts were later given to the salvation army, the music was provided by the corn-stock limited, later in the evening santa claus arrived and crowned debbie young queen.

the highlight of the year for the girls in gac, which is now open to ninth graders as long as they participate in any varsity or gac sponsored sport, is the annual slumber party held february 26 in the gym. another major event of the gac was the entry of their 'float, haunted house”, in the annual valley halloween parade, haunted house won first place for the “best over-all float.” in modern lit. class, instructed by mrs. bresee, students spend most of their time in discussion, they study books, poets, authors, and related things, seats in the class are arranged in a circle most of the time, to encourage participation. food service, a one year course, is presented during the last half of the junior and the first half of the senior year, the students, both boys and girls, work with large quantities of food and institutional cooking equipment. 14

the combined elementary band, consisting of bands from the audrielle lynch school, the main elementary, and the ulster school, under the direction of mr. swetland, opened the spring concert, april 3, 1971. this was followed by the junior band under the direction of mr. allford and the senior band under the direction of mr. swetland. this was the final spring concert for mr. swetland, who is retiring after twenty years of teaching, seventeen of them at athens high school, a graduate of ahs, mr. swetland is a charter member of the band. mr. swetland received his bachelor’s degree from mansfield state college and his master’s from new york university. his first teaching assignment was in huntington mills, Pennsylvania, where he originated a band, after teaching in ripley, new york, he returned to athens to a band consisting of fifty members, under his direction it has grown to more than one hundred and the stage band was instituted. 16
