consumer economics involves a study of the american free enterprise system, a study of federal, state, and local laws that protect the consumer, and a study of corresponding agencies that enforce the laws, emphasis is placed on consumer interest in quality merchandising. psychology and sociology, two elective courses offered for the first time thhs year, are limited to seniors, each course is eighteen weeks in length, the purpose of the course is twofold: 1. to familiarize the students with the subjects contents and 2. to teach the students how to live. the study of character as influenced by the stars has become a popular sport, and the sales of books on the subject have rapidly increased, a person can find almost anything, from dishware to jewelry, with his own personal sign, this interest in astrology is evident in athens high school — even in the library bulletin board. oral and written expression, instructed by mr. weaver, is a class in communication, because it is actually two separate classes, students have a choice of taking one or both, in oral expression, students learn the art of speaking publicly, in written they learn to express themselves in many styles of writing. among the more popular events at athens high school was the miss recreation dance held no-vember 21, 1970 in the gym. the dance was sponsored by the teen council and music was provided by raw meat, the candidates for queen were ja-nine stover, glenda gehris, sally allis, mary lou bustin, ci ci doty, and cathy ho-gan, janine stover escorted by guy liguori was crowned by annette qua-trini, the former miss recreation. glenda gehris was first runner-up in the selection made by attending students. 10

the first fine arts festival, consisting of drama, music, and displays in the fields of photography, art, and literature, was held in the auditorium december 8, 1970. the high light of the evening was a reader’s theater, the first play of its kind to be presented in ahs. in this type of drama all parts are read, the audience was forced to use their imaginations because there was no scenery and many actors played four or five parts.
