Lock Haven State College Physical Education 8, 9, The world of automation provides for more leisure than ever before, thus making it necessary to establish-a definite pattern of physical activity. At Athens High School, students participate in rigorous exercises and sports during their physical education classes. These classes not only maintain a fit physical state, but create a healthy mental attitude. Students participate in a variety of sports throughout the year some of which are baseball, basketball, soccer, track, field hockey, and volleyball. Through these competitive sports, students develop co-operation, fellowship, and leadership. The President's Physical Fitness Award may be earned in gym class by the ambitious, capable student. To earn this award and be a member of this national organization, one must run, jump, do situps, pullups, and throw a softball a required distance. The newest addition to our physical education department is the J. C. Lynch Natatorium. Swimming classes consist of basic strokes and water games. Specialized courses in drownproofing and lifesaving techniques were introduced this year. The program is established to acquaint the students with the various areas of swimming. ' 26

Ithaca College Instrumental Music Art, Music, and Western Man Senior High Music Glee Club ART AND MUSIC Both the art and music departments in Athens High School play an important part in curricular and extracurricular activities. Junior high students take a semester each of music and art in which they acquire a fundamental knowledge of both subjects. Senior high students may elect art classes or activities in music. Junior high art classes are generalized classes offered to introduce the student to art through many different media. Sketches are assigned to cause the student to become more aware of his surroundings. Students work in oils and pastels to stimulate creativity. The basic lessons continue into the senior high classes. Art I is offered as a general review of all techniques. Art ll becomes more concentrated. Students work on their own more and originality is encouraged. Art Ill is an advanced course offered to those who plan to enter art fields after high school. The purpose of the music department is to promote an interest among students in music and to display the talents of the student body to the public. Junior high students are introduced to various aspects of music: orchestration, composition and composers. Senior high students may try out for Glee Club or Treble Aires or they may join the Senior Band. Especially talented students may compete on a district and state level for vocal or instrumental performances. JOHN F. SWANK B.S. HEALTH, NURSE, DRIVERS' EDUCATION EDITH HINE R.N. Robert Packer Hospital Health courses are required for students in the ninth and twelfth grades. Throughout both years, the structure and numerous systems of the human body are studied in detail. Freshmen are given the opportunity to fulfill the requirements for a Red Cross Junior First Aid certificate. A specialized unit in Civil Defense is included in the Senior Health Courses. The school nurse assists the administration, physician, and dentist in planning and organizing the school health program. She schedules physical and dental examinations, handles safety precautions, and arranges special tests, examinations, and immunization programs. Maintaining comprehensive health records for each student is the direct responsibility of the school nurse. The purpose of the Driver's Education Program is to help develop skills in defensive driving. The course stresses the importance for a responsible driving attitude. ln accordance with state law, vehicle rules and regulations are studied in depth. The students receive thirty hours of classroom instruction as well as actual driving experience. THOMAS E. JONES B.S.
