Edinboro State College Nlath 7, 8 MATH The world of mathematics, although a complicated one, is made easier, at Athens High School by a unique organization of courses and instruction by experienced, capable teachers. Upon entering Athens, a student begins with the study of seventh and eighth grade math. These courses provide a background of algebra and geometry for those students who plan to continue in these areas of study. Ninth grade math consists of a full year of Algebra I. The object of this course is to develop fully the basic fundamentals of algebra required of college mathematics. A student entering his sophomore year may either elect tenth grade math, a review of previous concepts, or unified geometry, the study of lines, angles, and plane and solid figures. Unified Geometry, which provides the development of clear thinking and further enables a student to precise expression, understand the more difficult areas of mathematics. A trigonometry and intermediate combined course in algebra is offered to juniors. In this course students functions and increase their study trigonometric knowledge of algebra. In his senior year a student may choose to take a 12th grade refresher course, consisting of the practical application of math for terminal students, or an advanced mathematics course, consisting of a continuation of algebra and an introduction to calculus. Junior high students take a semester each of music and art in which they acquire a fundamental knowledge of both subjects. Senior high students may elect art classes or activities in music. Junior high art classes are generalized classes offered to introduce the student to art through many different media. Sketches are assigned to cause the student to become more aware of his surroundings. Students work in oils and pastels to stimulate creativity. The basic lessons continue into the senior high classes. Art I is offered as a general review of all techniques. Art ll becomes more concentrated. Students work on their own more and originality is encouraged. Art Ill is an advanced course offered to those who plan to enter art fields after high school. The purpose of the music department is to promote an interest among students in music and to display the talents of the student body to the public. Junior high students are introduced to various aspects of music: orchestration, composition and composers. Senior high students may try out for Glee Club or Treble Aires or they may join the Senior Band.
