It also develops curiosity and appreciation for one's environment and introduces the use of the scientific approach for the gaining of knowledge. Science studies begin in the seventh grade with a general survey of basic astronomy and health. A study of elementary chemistry and physics is included in eighth grade science. ln biology, freshmen learn specifically about plants, animals, and their functions. Students entering senior high are offered a preference of science courses. Their choice in tenth grade is usually physical science, followed by chemistry in eleventh grade and physics in twelfth grade. However, students taking science for a general background only, prefer vocational science in the Sophomore year studies of earth science in the junior and senior years. Besides the regular courses, this year the Science Department has sponsored a Junior High Science Club. The club is composed of seventh and eighth graders who continue experiments on projects requiring more than class allows. RICHARD MERRITT B.S. It also tries to stimulate active participation in local and national affairs. Courses in the seventh grade through twelfth grade are compulsory. Seventh grade students are taught the basic history and geography of Africa, Asia, and Europe in the course Eastern Lands. ln eighth grade, American History covers our progress from the early days of our country to the Civil War. The study of Pennsylvania is also included in this course. Freshmen are taught citizenship and government in Civics. Students entering tenth grade study World Culture. This is divided into two main areas, world history and world geography. The students take which ever is preferable to them. A continuation from eighth grade, United States History is taught in eleventh grade. This course traces our history from the Civil War to the present. Problems of Democracy, which is a senior elective, acquaints the students with foreign and domestic problems of daily living. It also prepares them to accept their responsibilities of citizenship. A recent addition to the Social Studies department is a special current events discussion group. This group meets every Tuesday and Friday before school to discuss problems of our day. ROBERT B.
