These three subjects strive for the common goal of developing the art of communication. Their programs are established to promote exact and precise exchanges of ideas and information. In the seventh and eighth grades, English courses stress grammar and composition. Reading instruction, received twice weekly, is a separate course aimed at increasing speed reading and comprehension. Senior High courses further develop these skills as well as introduce literature. These courses are divided into American Literature in eleventh grade and English Literature in twelfth grade. Electives in English offered to juniors and seniors are Modern Literature and Oral and Written Expression. In Modern Literature contemporary authors and their works are discussed and evaluated. Oral and Written Expression develops techniques in public speaking and teaches the correct organization and preparation of formal writings. German is taught on three levels to students in senior high. Courses in French, which are offered in every grade continue the grammar and vocabulary which were begun in the primary grades. Both foreign language courses include background history and a study of the customs of that country. The aim of both the French and German programs is to provide students with an adequate fluency in the language and a working knowledge of the country. 20

It also develops curiosity and appreciation for one's environment and introduces the use of the scientific approach for the gaining of knowledge. Science studies begin in the seventh grade with a general survey of basic astronomy and health. A study of elementary chemistry and physics is included in eighth grade science. ln biology, freshmen learn specifically about plants, animals, and their functions. Students entering senior high are offered a preference of science courses. Their choice in tenth grade is usually physical science, followed by chemistry in eleventh grade and physics in twelfth grade. However, students taking science for a general background only, prefer vocational science in the Sophomore year studies of earth science in the junior and senior years. Besides the regular courses, this year the Science Department has sponsored a Junior High Science Club. The club is composed of seventh and eighth graders who continue experiments on projects requiring more than class allows. RICHARD MERRITT B.S.
