These three subjects strive for the common goal of developing the art of communication. Their programs are established to promote exact and precise exchanges of ideas and information. In the seventh and eighth grades, English courses stress grammar and composition. Reading instruction, received twice weekly, is a separate course aimed at increasing speed reading and comprehension. Senior High courses further develop these skills as well as introduce literature. These courses are divided into American Literature in eleventh grade and English Literature in twelfth grade. Electives in English offered to juniors and seniors are Modern Literature and Oral and Written Expression. In Modern Literature contemporary authors and their works are discussed and evaluated. Oral and Written Expression develops techniques in public speaking and teaches the correct organization and preparation of formal writings. German is taught on three levels to students in senior high. Courses in French, which are offered in every grade continue the grammar and vocabulary which were begun in the primary grades. Both foreign language courses include background history and a study of the customs of that country. The aim of both the French and German programs is to provide students with an adequate fluency in the language and a working knowledge of the country. 20

LIBRARY The Athens High School library contains a wide variety of books and reference materials to fulfill the needs of the students and teachers. Many helpful improvements have been added this year. A 3m duplicator machine is now available as well as a record player with a collection of various language records. Because of a lack of space, magazines are being put into bound volumes. The magazines now in bound volumes are the National Geographic through years 1920-31 and Life 1930-60. One hundred and twenty new shelves were added and one thousand sixty new books were placed on these shelves. Seven hundred thirty of these books were given to the school by the ESEA under Title ll, which is a federal government organization, while the remainder were given as memorials. Although conditions for study are now excellent, additional books, records, and individual study carrels are desired. MARGARET D. PRUYNE BQ. University of North I. aroma B.S.
