Allen, who is presently convalescing from a series of heart attacks, has been a valuable asset to the Athens High faculty. He came to us in the 1965 school term, teaching history on the junior high level. These seventh and eighth grade students, who now compose the junior and senior classes, especially remember him for his keen sense of humor and interest in young people. Those who were not so fortunate as to have had him in class have undoubtedly heard of him through the rest of student body. We are taking this opportunity to express our appreciation and gratitude for his dedication to the teaching profession and his example of unfaltering courage. .10 DEDICATION MR. NELSON RETIREMENT MISS JULIA LUNGER The 1968-69 school term was the last for Miss Julia Lunger before her ensuing retirement. She will long be remembered by her students and fellow faculty members. Since the reorganization of Athens Area schools, Miss Lunger has been a Guidance Counselor at the high school. Her warm, understanding personality has been appreciated by every new class of seventh graders. She has devoted much time and effort to helping seventh and eighth graders adjust smoothly to high school routine. Miss Lunger has also taught in the Athens grade schools instructing every elementary grade. When she first came to the high school she was not yet a Guidance Counselor, but rather a classroom teacher. Miss Lunger explains that she became concerned with the junior high age level and decided to earn her Master's degree in Guidance. Julia Lunger had wanted to be a teacher since she was a young child. This desire remained with her all through her schooling. Some of her present interests and hobbies, too, began when she was a child. She has always been curious about and appreciative of nature. Over the years, she has collected sea shells, many of which she has kept on shelves in her office. Bird-watching is another pastime which Miss Lunger enjoys. In her own high school, she was a member of the girls' varsity basketball team, played the violin in the orchestra. She recalls that long dangling earrings which reached the shoulders were the fad at that time. Miss Lunger was a 1925 graduate of Athens High School. She attended college at the Pennsylvania State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree. Miss Lunger has been considered a valuable member of our faculty, and her absence next Fall will be regretted. 11 BOARD OF EDUCATION Row 1: Laurence R. Kinsley, Mrs. Celia Arnold, Harlan Rowe, Dr. Ralph Gregory, Robert Fraley Row 2: Wallace Nichols, John W. Watson, Carl Morris, Dr. Clifton J. Lynch Athens Area High School, Smithfield, Ridgebury, and Ulster High School, Main Elementary, Willow, Street, Helen Minard, Audrielle Lynch, and Ulster Sheshequin Elementary are the seven schools under the jurisdiction of the Athens Board of Education. The board is responsible for the hiring of teachers and all other personnel to staff these schools. Another facet of the board's work is the establishing or determining of school policies. Salary schedules, tax rates and budgets are decided upon by the school board. Other duties performed by these nine men are appropriating money for building maintenance and approving school sponsored class trips. This year's president is Mr. Harlan Rowe, who has been a member for seventeen years. A mechanical superintendent with The Evening Times, Mr. Rowe resides in R.D. 412 Athens. Dr. Ralph B. Gregory, vice president, is sewing his ninth year on the board. He lives at 208 South Street, Athens, and is an optometrist. Serving as treasurer for the board is Mr. Robert Fraley of 202 W. Cooper Street, Athens. He is a garage service manager and has also been a member for nine years. Dr. J. C. Lynch, a local general practitioner, lives at 304 North Main Street, Athens. He has been a member of the board for nineteen years. Another long term member, Mr. Fenton R. Murphy, has been on the board for sixteen years. He lives in R.D.1i1 Ulster where he is a dairy farmer. Mr. John W. Watson has been a member twelve years. He is an engineer at the Ingersoll-Rand and resides in R.D.ilf1 Milan. Mr. Carl A. Morris has been with the board eight years. A supervisor at the Ingersoll-Rand, he lives in R.D.ii1 Athens. Mr. Laurence Kingsley of East Smithfield, second vice president of the board, is a lumberman. He has been a board member for seven years. Mrs. Celia Arnold, although not a member of the school board, has served as its secretary for twenty years. A secretary in the high school as well, Mrs. Arnold resides at 703 North Main Street, Athens. This year the Board of Education has begun planning a new junior high or middle school. This school would be attended by students in the sixth, seventh, and eight grades. Such an arrangement would alleviate the problem of the presently over crowded high school. Architects have already begun drawing up plans which once state approved, will be carried out by the school board. Congratulations to each member of the graduation class. You have successfully completed the basic phase of your education. This is not the end of your educational experience. As you proceed through life, the process of education will continue whether formal or informal. Approach each day open-minded and eager to learn. This is basic if you wish to advance in any endeavor. The school will continue to be interested in your development. We always stand ready to assist you in any possible way. Best wishes for success and happiness. Richard W. Marvin Superintendent V 15 JAMES PRUYNE HIGH SCHOOL PRSNCIPAL B.S. East Strouds urg M.Ed. Cornell University Each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass, A book of rules. And each must make Ere life is flown A stumbling block Or a stepping stone. R. L. Sharpe A master carpenter, a builder of cathedrals or beautiful homes must possess three things: sharp tools, knowledge, and imagination. We are all born with the crude tools of our trade whatever it may be. During his approach to maturity a good craftsman must sharpen his tools. Then he must learn how to use them. Having the tools and the knowledge to use them, the temple in life he builds for himself will depend much upon his imagination and his ambition. Let each of you, the graduates of the class of '69, pause and assess his progress thus far. Have you sharpened your tools? Have you learned how to use them? Have you decided what you wish to build? Are you building a stumbling block or a stepping stone? Plan your life and live your plan. MILES F. RAKER Assistant Superintendent Congratulations to you, the graduates of the class of 1969. One of the most difficult problems facing young people of today is the development of convictions for right and wrong. Often happiness and usefulness of our lives depend on what we decide to do when these questions present themselves. The easy thing is to dream of the bright days ahead, to walk the high road with your head high in the rosy clouds of desire, the hard thing is to keep your commitments through the daily grind of ordinary things. Develop ideas that are ideal and success will surely be yours. Sincerely yours, Eugene T. Cerutti To the Class of 1969: You have reached a milestone in your educational endeavor. As you receive your diplomas at commencement, our community recognizes you as high school graduates. With this diploma in hand and equipped with the best knowledge your school can give, you stand ready to assume your responsibility as a citizen in a rapidly changing world. High school has been an interesting experience. You have learned to live, work and play together. Individually you have developed in character, in personality and in ability. In attaining your education you have also given a great deal to your school and community in leadership, in scholarship, in athletics, in dramatics and in many other ways. You have completed your tasks well and we praise you highly for it. However what you have thus far accomplished is only a prelude to what must yet be done. Use your high school training of today to endeavor to solve the complex problems of an uncertain world of tomorrow. lVly best wishes go with each of you. Miles F. Raker EUGENE T. The counselors are highly trained professionals who guide the students in choosing courses, schools, and jobs. They arrange talks and interviews to provide better opportunities for tomorrow's leaders. The methods by which they aid students are tests and interviews. Junior High students are given aptitude tests to determine courses they are to take in Senior High, while Senior High students are given scholastic tests to help determine their ability and direct them in choosing a college. Also, each student is treated as an individual and has interviews with his counselor throughout the year. A collection of college bulletins and catalogues is kept in the guidance office at the disposal of the students. New this year are individual tape booths where students may listen to recordings on opportunities offered in local colleges and the branches of the armed services. BETTY PAGE GLADYS REEVES R.N. Th.B. Many helpful improvements have been added this year. A 3m duplicator machine is now available as well as a record player with a collection of various language records. Because of a lack of space, magazines are being put into bound volumes. The magazines now in bound volumes are the National Geographic through years 1920-31 and Life 1930-60. One hundred and twenty new shelves were added and one thousand sixty new books were placed on these shelves. Seven hundred thirty of these books were given to the school by the ESEA under Title ll, which is a federal government organization, while the remainder were given as memorials. Although conditions for study are now excellent, additional books, records, and individual study carrels are desired. MARGARET D. PRUYNE BQ. University of North I. aroma B.S. These three subjects strive for the common goal of developing the art of communication. Their programs are established to promote exact and precise exchanges of ideas and information. In the seventh and eighth grades, English courses stress grammar and composition. Reading instruction, received twice weekly, is a separate course aimed at increasing speed reading and comprehension. Senior High courses further develop these skills as well as introduce literature. These courses are divided into American Literature in eleventh grade and English Literature in twelfth grade. Electives in English offered to juniors and seniors are Modern Literature and Oral and Written Expression. In Modern Literature contemporary authors and their works are discussed and evaluated. Oral and Written Expression develops techniques in public speaking and teaches the correct organization and preparation of formal writings. German is taught on three levels to students in senior high. Courses in French, which are offered in every grade continue the grammar and vocabulary which were begun in the primary grades. Both foreign language courses include background history and a study of the customs of that country. The aim of both the French and German programs is to provide students with an adequate fluency in the language and a working knowledge of the country. 20 LANGUAGE PAUL R. WEAVER B,A. Through the years, the Athenian has reflected the school's spirit as well as recorded its advancements. The development of school sports and clubs can be traced through-out the past century. Every year the editors strive to improve the yearbook, and, through its long life, many journalistic masterpieces have been published. ROW 1: M. Callear, L. Biles, S. Morningstar, K. Brittain, S. The purpose of the council is to offer suggestions to the administration on ways to promote citizenship, understanding, and school pride. This year the council sponsored a homecoming parade and organized pep rallies. The council also installed an honor system which is designed to eliminate passes and to promote trust and understanding between students and teachers. The system has worked quite well and is expected to remain a part of our school life. Dick Hogan - Sarg. of Arms David Campbell - treasurer Don Blauvelt - President Jackie Driscoll - Secretary Peter Law - President Dawn Davis - Wce-President Judy Hughes - Secretary Jim Gabriel - Treasurer The Junior High Student Council is made up of students elected to represent each seventh, eighth, and ninth grade homeroom. lts purpose is to find out the opinions of the junior high on school policies and problems, and, if necessary, suggest improvements or changes. The members attend council meetings and serve as reporters by letting their homerooms know about council events and decisions. This year their activities were all centered around earning money for Mr. Nelson Allen, a former Athens teacher, who was unable to continue his career because of an extended illness. Besides earning a large sum of money for Mr. Allen, they also sent him a roll of paper on which were written notes from the faculty and students of Athens High School. JUNIOR HIGH Row 1: J. Flynn, B. They offer their services for two or three periods a week during their study halls. They assist by signing out books, accepting fines, looking up materials for students, and keeping an assigned section of books orderly. At their meetings, they plan ways of raising money for club pins and possible trips. They also put on a book fair each fall as a student service. A wide variety of paperback books are offered for sale to the students and faculty. The profit goes to buy new books for the library. Row 1: B. Wilson, C. Lattimer, M. Pruyne, F. McDonald, E. This talented organization consisting of ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders, practices extensively throughout the summer and the school year in preparation for its various musical activities. The band is extremely precisioned in marching and maneuvers and is backed by equally sound musical ability. Their combined skills are demonstrated at area football games, valley parades, and numerous concerts. This yearlthe band members put into effect many unique money making projects to earn their expenses for a three day trip to New York. These projects consisted of: selling Christmas candles, candy, license plates, fire extinguishers, pen, and zip code books, as well as holding dances, bake sales, and tag days. The band has proven to be a great asset to our school. lt not only provides entertainment for the school and the public, but it also enables students with musical ability to develop and display this talent. It is divided into four parts - soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade members, previous members included, are chosen after try-outs at the end of each year. Accompanied by Kathy Klinko and Linda Smith, the Glee Club performed in our school's Spring and Christmas Concerts. Each year they sing for either graduation or Baccalaureate. Community organizations or services such as the D.A.R. and Library Club receive special performances. Yearly a number of students are selected from our Glee Club for District Chorus through written applications. The northeastern schools in our state take turns sponsoring district chorus. The students selected may then try-out for State Chorus. Athens High School students who participated in District Chorus this year were Betsy Winston, Dorcas Hawthorne, Keith Gabriel, Philip Wanck, and Larry Hunsinger. 158 Tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade girls are eligible to try out for Treble Aires, a select group of superior vocalists. During the 1968-69 term, six seniors and six juniors were the members of this excellent singing group. These girls were divided into four altos, four first Sopranos, and four second sopranos, creating a pleasing, harmonious tonal effect. Nlrs. Allen directed, accompanied, and sponsored the Treble Aires at their eleven concerts. These concerts included performing for the D.A.R., the Senior Citizens and other civic groups, as well as for numerous school functions. Row 1: D. Davis, J. Bresee, S. Gehris, D.
