MILES RAKER ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1968, Congratulations! Today the world is changing rapidly. In your twelve years of school you have witnessed as much scientific advancement and sociological change as had been made in the past century. Perhaps the greatest single scientific achievement was on Oct. 4. 1957. when the world heard for the first time the beep. beep, beep, of the Russian Sputnik, soon to be followed by the viewing on television to the actual launching and recovery of our own American Astronauts. We of today speak and think in terms of material and mass production, of material and man power, of material and mass battles. We are prone to think of the spectacular battle or event and forget about all the little decisions each of us must make. Someone has aptly called these the battles fought and won behind your forehead. The forces we marshal here are those of right and wrong, of good or evil, of temperance or intemperance! the decisions are the defeats or victories depending on how we use our educational training to solve them. JAMES PRUYNE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL In this age of great armies and big battlefields, we are apt to lose sight of the battles within us which make so little noise and require so little space, battles which may be fought during the quiet of an evening in your home, during a walk over the countryside or in the silence of the night. Are not these more important than the battles won with bombs and planes? Is it not true that if we first win these battles behind our foreheads we may be spared the suffering and distraction on the vast battlefield between nations? It is in America, with a democracy like ours, that each may make his own decisions. The sum total of these individual decisions is our democratic society. and our form of government. Use your high school training to judge wisely and exercise your rights, privileges and duties as an American citizen. and we will continue to enjoy the freedoms which exist only in America. 12
