I 968 Athenian Athens Area High School Athens, Pennsylvania School Views 2 School Views Foreword Athens is an area of great heritage. Indians, traders, explorers, and pioneers are a major part of her background. The pioneers, being New Englanders, brought with them a love for education. Feeling a definite lack of learning in their new homes, they held a meeting to discuss the construction of a school. This meeting took place February I I. 1797. at the Red Tavern Inn. The delegation of men present discussed the construction of the building. The dimensions were to be 42 feet in length. 44 feet in height, with 2 floors The location for the school was easily solved. The Susquehanna Company had set aside land in every township for education. Twenty-one acres were allocated in Athens and it was on this property that the Academy would be built The twenty-one acres had been divided into various plots of land. The plots were sold and the interest on the sale money was put in an account for the school, if one should be built A plot of land in the mid-section of the 21 acres was saved for the building of a school A building fund was collected by subscription. Men of the community and outlying cities subscribed to shares worth $30. Shares were paid off in building materials or $10 installment payments. The men involved in these subscriptions were joined under the title of The Athens Academical Society The frame of the building was raised on lot 25 in 1797. However, due to lack of funds the project dwindled and the building went up for sale in June 1808. The building was used as a storehouse for grain Again the interest in the Academy was kindled. By now repairs were needed The top floor had never been built so the Free and Accepted Masons were called upon to finish it. After talks with the Masons it was agreed upon that they would build it and hold their meetings there. After this the building was used for many things. Such things as town meetings, church sessions, dances, and public events were held here In 1813. Henry Wells, armed with a petition from the Athens Academical Society, obtained an enactment from the Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This established the Academy and appropriated $2000. to be under the care of an incorporated committee. The Academy was completed and an advertisement was placed in the Townada and Wilkes-Barre papers for a teacher Sylvania Garnsey from Harrisburg answered the ad. April 25. 1814. the first day of school was held. This building was used until March 5. I 842 On this day it burned down The burning was due to the antics of some young boys who had gone for a swim and climbed in a window to warm themselves. The Academy was rebuilt by October 1843 The last year of school in this building was 1868. After the last year Ihe building lay dormant until 1925 when the building was torn down. Many of the townspeople didn't understand why it was torn down, hoboes traveling through town used the building as an overnight stop. It was feared they might set the building on fire and burn the town down. The life of the Academy was a struggle but it did survive and was the fuel for the fire of our education in Athens today. Retirement Mr Earl K Dill This year after thirty-six years of teaching, Mr. Dill, head of our math department, is retiring. During his teaching years Mr. Dill has experienced changes in the student body, the curriculum. and in the school itself. Mr. Dill was one of the forty-two members of the 1924 graduating class in Athens. Noticeable characteristics of the students that year were the long dresses, separate collars on shirts, and wide ties. The school dress for boys was a shirt and a tie or a sweater. The, athletic sweaters were not the cardigan of today but crew neck pullovers with an A on the front. Students with cars and motorcycles were few. The bicycle was a common means of transportation. During his high school years Mr. Dill was a member of the football and track teams. His junior year he was class president. In addition to these activities he participated in class plays. The plays were presented for the public as well as for the student body. In 1938 his acting ability was exercised again as he held the lead role in the faculty play. His closing scene consisted of an embrace with his leading lady; the stage boys held the curtain a few moments longer much to the delight of the student audience. Mr. Dill was referred to as Pickle” in the 1924 Athenian. He was the Caruso of the senior class, participating in the operetta and chorus. In 1928 Mr. Dill received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and later studied at Syracuse University. In September of 1932 Mr. Dill began his teaching career in Athens. He taught plane geometry, civics, and POD. In 1950 he moved into the math department. There have been several changes in the math curriculum during Mr. Dill's career. New courses such as modern algebra, unified geometry, and calculus have been added. However, classes are larger due to the expansion of the school district. Mr. Dill has contributed thirty-six years of his life to the students, past and present, of Athens High School. His services will long be remembered. Best wishes for the coming years are conveyed to Mr. Dill from all those ever acquainted with him in the Athens school system—May happiness be with him always. 5 Table Of Contents Faculty Administration Pg. 8 Seniors........................................Pg. 26 Underclassmen................................. The one teacher and three assistants of the Academy staff have been supplanted by the seventy-one employees of the present faculty and administration. Today's cafeteria and janitorial services would amaze those early Athenians. The first teacher in the Academy. Sylvanua Garnsey. received $500 per year. The school year was divided into four quarters beginning April 25 and ending March 6. The curriculum included music, art. language, and chemistry—all taught by assistants—and reading, writing and arithmetic taught by the preceptor. The Academy, with its small but efficient staff, offered its students the best in education. Athens High School, with its well trained staff and well equipped building, offers its students R. MILES RAKER ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1968, Congratulations! Today the world is changing rapidly. In your twelve years of school you have witnessed as much scientific advancement and sociological change as had been made in the past century. Perhaps the greatest single scientific achievement was on Oct. 4. 1957. when the world heard for the first time the beep. beep, beep, of the Russian Sputnik, soon to be followed by the viewing on television to the actual launching and recovery of our own American Astronauts. We of today speak and think in terms of material and mass production, of material and man power, of material and mass battles. We are prone to think of the spectacular battle or event and forget about all the little decisions each of us must make. Someone has aptly called these the battles fought and won behind your forehead. The forces we marshal here are those of right and wrong, of good or evil, of temperance or intemperance! the decisions are the defeats or victories depending on how we use our educational training to solve them. JAMES PRUYNE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL In this age of great armies and big battlefields, we are apt to lose sight of the battles within us which make so little noise and require so little space, battles which may be fought during the quiet of an evening in your home, during a walk over the countryside or in the silence of the night. Are not these more important than the battles won with bombs and planes? Is it not true that if we first win these battles behind our foreheads we may be spared the suffering and distraction on the vast battlefield between nations? It is in America, with a democracy like ours, that each may make his own decisions. The sum total of these individual decisions is our democratic society. and our form of government. Use your high school training to judge wisely and exercise your rights, privileges and duties as an American citizen. and we will continue to enjoy the freedoms which exist only in America. 12 CELIA ARNOLD MR MARVIN S SECRETARY BOARD OF EDUCATION SECRETARY DAWN CONKLING MAIN OFFICE SECRETARY VIRGINIA CROWLEY MR PRUYNES SECRETARY MARILYN DEPUE GUIDANCE SECRETARY HELEN ROBINSON MAIN OFFICE SECRETARY NORRENE MURPHY HIGH SCHOOL SECRETARY 13 Faculty HELEN BOURDETTE CLYDE W BRESEE JULIA H LUNGER RUTH E JONES MARGARET D PRUYNE GLADYS REEVES DONALD RIKER Helen Bourdette Assistant Librarian Clyde W Bresee B S. The classes were much smaller because the enrollment never exceeded 2 I 8 students. Compared to our 1200 students this seems a mere drop in the bucket. Our equipment for teaching is more extensive and our teachers are better educated. Our learning surpasses that of the Academy by far. The Academy was void of all conveniences. Today our schools are equipped with water, heating, and toilet facilities, as well as with television. movies and records. The Academy seems almost crude to our advanced methods. Although the differences between the Academy and Athens High School are many the purpose of both is identical: the purpose being to prepare their students for life. J MARK ALEXANDER. Young The number of clubs has been cut down this year from lack of time to hold meetings; our activity period everyday has been cut out. However the clubs that survive carry on very well. Participation of the student body in clubs is great. Hard workers make our clubs the success they are. The Teaogan. our school newspaper, is but one example. May 1947, a staff of eleven advised by Dr. Bresee. ventured on a journey into literary publication. Their ship: a magazine composed of stories, poems, and articles written by the students. Their destination: to inspire more students in the writing field—perhaps they would try to write better in order to get published. The captain of their ship: editor George Clark. The crew: eleven members of Dr. Bresee's eleventh grade English class. The name of their ship: Xcaogan. which is very historic name. The name Teaogan is associated with very early Athenian history, in fact pre-Athens history. The Athens area was once the sight of the Iroquois confederation. From this historic name the word Teaogan was derived. and so it is our newspaper today. The first year of this venture saw four issues published. Selling for ten cents, the Teaogan was a success on the high school newsstand. Dr. Bresee continued this project until 1955 when he left the teaching field for another department. Each year the news-paper magazine has progressed; now it's under the direction of Mrs. Bresee and her large staff. The development and success of the ZeaogaM are attributed to the students who contribute their talent to it. It may safely be said that the original destination of Dr. Bresee's ship has been reached. Athenian The Athenian Staff is made up of an ambitious group of students from 7 th to 12th grade. This group is divided into two parts, the literary staff and the business staff. The staff works hard on a mass of plans, pictures, and names to publish the theman. For the first time in several years the staff is headed by an editor and assistant co-editors. In pre- J. Daniels. The Quill and Scroll is a national honor society for journalism. Chartered in 1965. it is a relatively new group in our school. For membership into the society, the student must be either a junior or senior and must have worked with a school publication. In this year’s Quill and Scroll Society. there are twenty-three seniors with new students entering at Easter. The sponsor of the society is Mrs. Bresee and the officers are as follows: President—Jean Lambert; vice-president—Vicki Ball; secretary—Ann Tuttle; and treasurer—Kathy Friend. The Zcaogan is the senior high newspaper of Athens High School. Its purpose is to inform the students of the school's activities and the current news as well as to add interesting literary articles and humor. During the meetings, the articles of the XtacgaM are planned and the editor assigns them to the reporters and other members of the ZtaoaaH staff. It is the aim of the staff to publish an issue of the magazine every six weeks if possible This year's editor and chief is Greg Kunkel and Mrs. Bresee is the faculty advisor. Mrs. Pickering of the business department helps with the typing and printing of the newspaper. 91 Sonic Express Kow .• B. Fraley. K. Luther. J. Geiger Kow 2, M. Baird. B Ball. Kunkel Thespians The Stage Guild, as a group, works in all fields of drama to provide entertainment for others and knowledge for themselves. Approximately seventy students, under the direction of Mr. Paul Weaver, work throughout the year to present one act and three plays, besides separate programs for the meetings. For each presentation, there are people working as cast, costume crew, properties crew, make-up crew, stage crew; for the three act play there are publicity, business management, and ushering to be executed. For each job there are a certain number of points to be awarded, depending on the size of the play, and the quality of the work done. After ten points have been earned, a Stage Guild member may be inducted into the National Thespian Society. The National Thespian Society is a drama club on a nation-wide scale. Each participating school has a charter and a chapter number. As a member of this Society, each person receives a subscription to ’Dramatics magazine, which acquaints him with the amateur drama work done in high schools all across the United States. Within each chapter. Thespian members work to receive extra awards by the same point system used to become a member of the Thespians. Each year a best actress and a best actor are chosen from each chapter. This year the Stage Guild and Thespians presented the one act play. M‘ saj Were the ftorogroces. and the three act play. D Blauvelt With Dr. Bresee as advisor the senior high student council conducts its meetings regularly. The purpose of the council is to promote citizenship in the school. The meetings are the students' chance through their elected representatives to present their problems, their wants, and their ideas to the administration. This year the senior high student council has purchased the refrigerator for our school nurse, given money to great needs, such as the Navajo Indians, established the Homecoming Parade, and has great ideas of purchasing further necessities and luxuries for the school. The council has worked on having better student participation in the student government, on honor stu-halls and on laws to control student traffic. Although the representatives are working on all these problems and many more, the main fact brought up in all meetings is the idea of fewer rules, less guidance by laws, and more self-pride in the school. Stephen Foster played a great part in the development of music in Athens, which is being carried on by our fine department today. Athens has a music department to be proud of. Not only is it well equipped with instruments but also with the talent to use the equipment to its greatest extent. Various musical programs are presented to the student body and public yearly. In addition to these programs, organizations of the community often engage the musical talents of our department. The year 1967-68 has seen the organization and re-organization of two groups. The Brass Ensemble, a new group, consists of five students under the direction of Mr. Allford. Reorganization of the Treble Aires was accomplished by Mrs. Allen. The Treble Aires is a girls' singing group compiled of eleven girls in the I Oth. I Ith and 12th grades. As our music department steadily grows its richness will deepen as our pride swells. Athens sportsmen have been known to competitors as the Bulldogs-' for twenty-eight years. The name originated in a junior high school contest in 1940. William S. Courtney was the coach at the time and it was under his supervision the contest was held. At this time Athens sports consisted of football, basketball, and track and baseball (in odd years). The Bulldog emblem was heartily received and remains today. 1967-68 was a marked year for the Bulldogs. Interscholastic sports activities were resumed with Sayre with the exception of football. The crowds at these games were very large. Excitement was at the season s height. Two new sports were added to the department. With the new swimming pool. Mr. Peters began a girls and a boys swimming team. Several meets were planned for the year Cross Country under the coaching of Mr. Russell began in the Fall. The runners competed in several meets with reasonable success for a beginning year. Ridgebury. Ulster High School, schedules all sports events and hires officials and other necessary help. His job requires that he be present and supervise all sports events in our area. He also orders athletic supplies and uniforms from a budget he must maintain. Mr. Leonard Gabriel, attendance director and head of the business department in Athens High School, is the assistant to Mr. Daniels in the direction of sports events. His job is to prepare for home games: to direct the selling of tickets, to hire police and to open the school. Mr. Weiss Retires As Football Coach At the close of the season. Mr. Weiss announced his retirement as Football coach and on Tuesday. November 22. an assembly was held in which Gary Fairbanks presented him with a testimonial award on behalf of this year’s team. Mr. Weiss has coached our football teams for the past nine years putting his abilities into making Athens football teams the best in the Valley. Such businessmen and their businesses as Jake Harder the gunsmith. Moses Sawyer the tailor, and Dick Durbin the blacksmith, have all been replaced with modern men and their factories. One of these factories is the Ingersoll Rand. Preceding the Ingersoll Rand was a factory opened in 1898 by C. F. Kellogg. He employed six men to make boilers. The factory turned from making boilers to developing different types of pneumatic tools. With this change the company expanded. It now employed one hundred men. In 1905 the Rand Drill Company combined with Ingersoll Sargent Company to form the I.R. of today. The I.R. has progressed into a large factory. And so have many businesses grown. Their establishment and growth can be traced through the Athenian. The advertisements in the Athenian serve as a permanent record of the businesses in Athens, and the surrounding area.
