Seniors The seniors on the following pages will be the last class to he graduated from the present high school. Next year, high school students will attend a new school. This school will be a far cry from the first school for advanced learning established in Athens—the Athens Academy. The resolution to establish the Academy was drafted and adopted at a meeting at Matthewson’s Red Tavern on February 11, 1797, and a building fund created by subscription. Completed in 1813, school began April 25, 1814 with Syl-vanus Guernsey as principal. By 1840, two hundred students were in attendance. They were offered reading’ writing, and spelling at SI.50 for a term of eleven weeks; arithmetic, English, grammar, and geography at S2.50 per term; and rhetoric, history, logic, mathematics, and natural science at S4.00 per term. Each student was also required to furnish a due proportion of firewood. The Academy became noted as a seat of culture and learning. Many famous persons attended, including Stephen Foster who studied here in 1841. That was also the year that the first “Athenian” was prepared and edited. The Academy served as an important spoke in the life of the community.
