The 119th Edition of the A THEM AN Published by The Class of 1960 Athens Area Joint High School Athens, Penna. Table of Contents Administration and Faculty p. 6 Seniors p. 20 Underclassmen p. 52 Junior High p. 60 Music p. 72 Sports p. 84 Activities p. 98 Ads 2 p. 126 Foreword This Athenian will bring to you the present, the past, and a glimpse of the future of education in Athens. As you peruse the following pages, you will notice each section is arranged to bring about this end. Through this we hope to tell you the story of the schools of Athens. This, the last year in the school on River Street, is filled with many memories. So. too, is your Athenian. The boy and girl represent you, the students of Athens High, without whom this book would be impossible, and for whom this book was written and the schools were built. 3 Athens is a town to be proud of. Her history is made up of Indians, traders, armies, border wars, and hardy pioneers. To each of these she had something great to offer. To the Indians, Spanish Hill and Roundtop served as fortresses, and the river flats south of the point offered ideal campgrounds—better known as Queen Ester’s Flats. The trader found Hollenback’s Trading Post to be the last supply center for the frontier country to the north along both rivers. The pioneers were attracted to this rich valley, made accessible by the river, only to be caught in the bitter struggle over land claims between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, known as the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. While Athens was still young and our country' was still in its birth, the people of Athens met to discuss a point of importance. This point was the establishment of a school. The farseeing pioneers realized the future of Athens rested upon the education of the boy and girl. School was set up in a log coopership in the year 1789. The first school master, Jared Root, taught the boy and girl the traditional three “R’s” and laid tlie groundwork for future education in Athens. 6 7 ATHENS BOROUGH: Left to right: S. Cooper, R. Hopkins, J. Lynch, C. Arnold, R. Gregory, R. Fraley. ULSTER TOWNSHIP: J. Watson, R. Ammerman, K. Walters, R. Gallup, L. Lenox, Absent. Once a month, the twenty members of the School Board meet to discuss school problems and to conduct their regular business. The present jointure was formed on July 1, 1956, and is made up of Athens Borough, Athens Township, and Sheshequin Township. ATHENS TOWNSHIP: H. Rowe, R. Page, W. Griswold, D. Hicks, R. Bowen. Officers JOINT BOARD: J. Lynch, R. Bowen, C. Arnold, S. Cooper, R. Gallup. Until the jointure was made in 1956, a jointure formed in 1951 existed. The Board has devoted much time and patience to solving the problems of our school. 10 Our congratulations to Mr. Richard Marvin, Supervising Principal, for the excellent progress in the planning and construction of the new school building. Next year, high school students will attend a new school. This school will be a far cry from the first school for advanced learning established in Athens—the Athens Academy. The resolution to establish the Academy was drafted and adopted at a meeting at Matthewson’s Red Tavern on February 11, 1797, and a building fund created by subscription. Completed in 1813, school began April 25, 1814 with Syl-vanus Guernsey as principal. By 1840, two hundred students were in attendance. They were offered reading’ writing, and spelling at SI.50 for a term of eleven weeks; arithmetic, English, grammar, and geography at S2.50 per term; and rhetoric, history, logic, mathematics, and natural science at S4.00 per term. Each student was also required to furnish a due proportion of firewood. The Academy became noted as a seat of culture and learning. Many famous persons attended, including Stephen Foster who studied here in 1841. That was also the year that the first “Athenian” was prepared and edited. The Academy served as an important spoke in the life of the community. The building was considered one of the best in the surrounding country. Many rules were put into effect. One concerning teachers read: “Any teacher who shall fail, for any cause whatever, to be present at the ringing of the bell shall report himself to the Principal as tardy; and any teacher tardy without good and sufficient reasons shall forfeit one-half day’s pay.” And teachers today think they have it rough. Rules were also established for the students to follow. “Pupils are required to be cleanly in personal habits; to refrain from the use of tobacco in or about the school premises; to be kind to their playmates; obedient and respectful to their teachers; to refrain from the use of profane or improper language, and to conform to the regulations of the school.” Unfortunately, there are always individuals who break the rules. “The directors reported that one of the outhouses belonging to the High School building had been thrown down the river bank, and that there was sufficient evidence to place the guilt upon certain parties. It was therefore resolved that a warrant be issued against the parties and the matter fully investigated.” 52 Old Building New Building JUNIOR OFFICERS: Left to right: R. Carr, J. Coston, J. The annex was the only portion left standing. A new high school, made entirely of tile and brick over a skeleton of concrete, was built immdiately, and the annex was repaired. “The present high school is thoroughly modem.” (The Evening Times, May 28, 1926). There were nine teachers and 230 pupils in the high school. In 1926 the school contained 36 rooms. The rooms on the first floor included a large auditorium, where school assemblages were held and the principal’s office. On the second floor were a main study hall room, history, biology, language, hall, physics and chemistry recitation rooms and well equipped laboratories. The home economics department, established about 1920, consisted of three rooms and cloakrooms. The basement included the manual training department, laundry, stock room, print shop, boiler room, laboratories, gymnasium, and two adjoining dressing rooms. There were four courses of study offered in 1926. The general course was designed for students who did not intend to enter college, preferring studies that would aid them in the business world. The course offered English, history, Ma and science. The Academic course consisted of English, history, Math and Latin, French, or Greek. Music To promote a successful educational program in our community, it is necessary for all its citizens to stand behind it. In preparing the boy and girl for future citizenship, the schools must teach loyalty and democracy through set courses in civics, problems of democracy, and current events. Through our school sports, the students are encouraged to practice democracy in spite of the hostility against the neighboring towns. This is all in fun. There are many extra-curricular activities at Athens High School. Most of the students participate in one or more of these. The activities give the students a chance to learn how to co-operate with his fellow students as well as his teachers. We at Athens High have a wonderful staff of teachers and advisers. They observe each pupil and assist him in selecting a course of study, and. when a course has been entered upon, to insist in a reasonable manner upon its completion. Until this year, the school has been crippled by the accommodations, but very soon fine buildings await occupancy to relieve the crowded conditions. FIRST ROW: M. Worden, R. Snyder, N. Hughes, B. It is made up of members of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes, and gives two concerts a year, one at Christmas and one in the Spring. The songs are of a wide selection, often introducing rhythms to old favorites. Chorus is a wonderful experience for all who participate, and its members owe much to Miss Wood, who is now spending her last year as director. 76 Beards, J. Morley, R. Colwell, S. Smith, C. The federal government sponsored the project and paid forty-five per cent of the cost; the remaining fifty-five per cent was absorbed by the School Board. The gym was dedicated to Dr. Coughlen, president of the Board at the time. With three hundred seats and two hundred folding chairs, on the last side, the capacity of the gym was five hundred people. Its dimensions were 60 feet by 74 feet. Located at the south end were two dressing rooms and directors’ offices. With this addition, physical education and sports activities were increased. Also added at this time was a music and activities room. This room measured 35 square feet and was used not only for music, but also for any other necessary classes. KNEELINC: A. His absence from the rest of the game was probably a contributing factor in St. Michael’s being the first team to score against Athens. Athens vs. Sayre The Sayre backfield was just too much for the hard playing Athens team. To add to Athens’ troubles, Harold Cole and Jack Firestine were injured and had to be taken to the hospital. Oh. goody, here comes the Rand! Athens vs. Corning North Athens looked like a well co-ordinated team in the first quarter, hut by the second quarter, Athens’ injuries began to tell on them. The loss of Bob Fuller in the first quarter and Jon Parshall later on in the game added to Athens’ downfall. Athens vs. Waverly It was a thrilling game and a fine conclusion to the football season. Athens scored the winning points on a touchback with one minute to play in the game. This score was made possible by a tremendous sixty-three yard punt by Dick DePue that rolled to the Waverly three yard line and the whole Athens forward wall. After many years of needing a new school hadly, the dream is finally being fulfilled. During the summer months and into the school year, men have been working steadily on the new creation, located on Third Street, to have the building in readiness for the future classes of A.H.S. For the present senior class and senior classes of the past, this dream will not be realized. The joy of a new school will be lost forever for them, but a new horizon unfolds for the classes of the future if the school is loved and protected from harm by its students. The new high school will have a capacity of 1,047 students. It will definitely be an outstanding piece of educational architecture in Bradford County. It was built by the Hunter Campbell and Rae Company and will stress education excellence and economy, costing a mere $1,907,171, which is rather inexpensive as such buildings go. The design emphasizes harmony of departmental placing. Band, Home Economics, and Industrial Arts are separate from the academic class- rooms. Here is the pictorial story of the development of the Athenian. The planning requires a great deal of thought. Everyone expresses his ideas and the best of these are utilized. Next, a planning dummy is used to arrange sections, pictures, and printed material in the book. The information is then typed on specially prepared layout sheets. Athenian The drawing up of the plans is the next step. The work of the photographers begins. Pictures of clubs and activities are taken, each in a unique manner. Senior write-ups and club descriptions are compiled. 100 The advertising staff work in pairs canvassing business establishments and selling space in the Athenian. The membership of this cluh is determined through athletic ability —the earning of a letter in one of the Varsity sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track. This group has many projects designed to promote sportsmanship in the school. This year, projects have been organized for the purpose of raising money for the Lynn Page Fund. They have done an excellent job, and are to be commended. Among the outstanding athletic clubs in Athens High School, the Girls Athletic Club is one of the most active. This club is composed of junior and senior girls. Under the leadership of Mrs. Jones, members of the G.A.C. engage in sports such as volleyball, basketball, hockey and softball. It is hoped that G.A.C. will continue its fine work. G.A.C. OFFICERS: S. Jackson, N. Sackett, G. Slater, E. Crone. ■■ ON MAT: L. Brozoski, B. Rumpff, C. Vander-pool, L. Woodbum, E. Raupers, D. Thorpe These are the people whose job consists of putting together the pieces that are left of the school when the students leave. Since the school is still here, it is proof of the wonderful cleaning power of our maintenance staff. Mrs. Dildine Ads Since the school will be completely modem, there will be several radical departures from the practices of former years. To take care of cafeteria service, students will follow a split-lunch schedule. The seventh and eighth graders’ lunch period will be from 11:06 to 11:31, Freshmen and Sophomores will eat from 11:53 to 12:08, and Juniors and Seniors from 12:40 to 1:05. The new plan will be superior to the old in that only two-thirds of the students will be eating at one time, there will be 20 minutes for the cafeteria staff to prepare for each group, and there will be one-way traffic at lunch time. The present building will be utilized by the elementary students. The recreation department may also share the building. This plan would greatly relieve the present crowded sit-t uation. It is hoped that all the memorable customs and traditions of Athens High will be carried over into the new building. If the students will show their love for the school by refraining from writing on the walls and littering the halls with paper, they will long have a school of which they can be proud.
