In addition, are the officers: the president, who is a senior, and the vice-president, a junior, who is elected in November, and who automatically becomes president in his senior year. The main purpose of the student council is to help keep the school in smoothly-working order. Congestion in the halls is partly relieved by rules made by the council, and this does a tremendous amount in promoting the order desired. The pencil-vending machine, serviced V Raupers by the council is another practical side of the council's functions. A job for the student council this year was to decide the use of any profits from the variety show. In two years the student body, directed by student council, has supported a Greek girl. She has now become self-supporting, but the council is in the process of getting another child for adoption, With the excellent sponsorshipof Dr. Bresee, may the student council in the future guide the student body as well as it has in the past. The president is a freshman and the vice-president is an eighth grader who becomes president in his freshman year. A three average is a requirement for membership. The junior high student council is guided by Mr. Knouse. It is entirely separate from the senior high student council. The students of A,H,S, are very thankful for the help of the P.A. oper- ators, who devote one free period a day, five days a week to their work. Without them there would be students running around the halls, knocking on doors asking, 'ls Charlie Brown here? Mrs. Southee would like to see him at the end of the period. The G.A.C. meets each ac- tivity period under the leadership of Mrs. Ruth Jones. Activities for the club have consisted of playing bas- ketball and volleyball with other girls' teams. Plans were discuss- ed and carried out for the annual senior boys versus senior girls bas- ketball game. In the winter months the G.A.C. planned outdoor activities such as skiing, skating and toboggan- ing and also made trips to Elmira for indoor swimming. The point system is the basis of recognition in G.A.C. A girl must earn 500 points a year, consisting of receiving so many points for each game or hour played in various sports. If she succeeds in this, she is awarded a medal if a senior or a letter if a junior. The awards are presented in assembly the last day of school. The following officers were elected for the year 1957-58-Nancy Storelli, president, Nancy Gardner, vice-president, Nancy Blemle, sec- retary, Linda Kreamer, recording secretary and Joan Northrup, trea- surer. One of the biggest dreams of anew letterman from our four sports is that he will soon become a member of the Pigskin A Chasers. This club, which is one of the school's oldest, f f j is rapidly increasing in membership and importance. The only f Q qualification for acceptance into the Pigskin Chasers is that D the person wishing to enter the club possess a letter in one of I the sports. It is not at all a time consumingclub, but many a fine job is done by the different club committees. One of these jobs is the selling of football programs. These programs are made up by the varsity cheerleaders, who are honorary members in the Pigskin Chasers. Another task is the showing ofa movie to raise money for letters and sweaters for the senior members of the club. The club's initiation used to be a real ordeal and torture for its new members. The club has changed its policy and this year.the new members were allowed to sing and make some speeches before an assembly of the entire Senior High. Under the direction of Coach Childs and his four assistants, elected by the club members, the Pigskin Chasers has developed into a fine institution. The purpose of the club is to develop good character, leadership and democratic qualities through direct participation in club projects. Meetings are held twice a month and presided over by Betty Kjelgaard as president, Marjorie Catlin as vice-president, and Marcella McKeel as Secretary-Treasurer. At these meetings many ideas are presented and worked out. The girls have undertaken many activities, out of school as well as in. One of their well-known projects is doing volunteer 'EW tn, work at the Robert Packer Hospital. llere the girls are recognized by the neat pink and white aprons they wear. Most of the members can recall moments trying toplay the first note on their new instru- ment and completing the first book, so a more advanced one could be started. Another big thrill was being admitted to the Junior Band. This band is now under the direction of Mr. All- ford, our new assistant band director, who also does much of the lesson work. The next big step and the one most re- membered by all the members is the advancement to the Athens High School Senior Band. Now the eighth graders enjoy the same privileges as the Seniors. These next five years right up to graduation time will be full of exciting things such as football games, concerts, parades, plus playing for many other activities such as County, District and possibly State Band. Among the musical groups at Athens are found the senior high mixed chorus and the seventh and eighth grade chorus, both under the direction of Miss Wood. The younger group meets during activity periods. It is composed of thirty seventh and eighth grade students who sing two-part music. Most of their appearances are in junior high school assemblies. The senior high mixed chorus is a group of fifty voices singing four-part music. Performances are given in the Christmas Concert, in the spring variety show, and at commencement. From the senior chorus are chosen delegates for county and district choruses, as well as Triple Trio members. Mem- bers of chorus chosen to go to district chorus this year were Nancy Storelli, Janet Griswold, Betty Kjelgaard, and Jim Ben- nett. A chorus board acts in representing the entire group in planning the program for the Christmas Concert. These elected members form and appoint committees for decorations and staging. il JUHIUH IIHUHUS IAS' U in nm' or more 6 Y V ' : PIA 'JORNV K '-.J cv V ,.f 3 4 , ' .1 .. V,- ,H S, nv f x , Q . Many girls from 9th, lOth, and llth grades try out for majorette but only a few have the honor of being se- lected. The girls trying out are chosen annually by the other majorettes and Mr. Swetland, band director. Ability to march and twirl, leadership, friendly per- sonality, neat appearance, and intelligence sum up the qualifications. This attractive group of girls performs for crowds at football games and parades. Being able to perform for crowds like these requires many hours of hard practice. In fact, the majorettes practice in the summer before football season begins. The crowds were well pleased with the excellent job the majorettes did in 1957. Jackie Carr, head majorette, did a good job leading these girls. The mascot was Joey Carr, sister of the head majorette. During football season, new blue and white uniforms were acquired. The drum majorette wore blue, while the others wore white. Marching down the field in the traditional blue and white, the majorettes made an im- pressive group. ill 4 1 ,Rh E I K-TNKQ5 . p N r 4 Q n , V Q ,X k gg 1, x Wx xi X np: Q .X x xilsi we 5 sf A Phylli x Svc A 23 X ,U L , El -qs. f,' Lf Q, 'S s Blau v eu BOX give their time to 5 is W I Open your heart to song was the theme for the 1957 Spring Festival. McKeels relaxing. lt is often felt that the senior year in high school is the most exciting. Not so to juniors. In your eleventh year you are well on your way toward making decisions, yet are still carefree enough to enjoy every moment to the fullest extent. At the junior level, class rings are chosen, symbols of the road climaxing in graduation. A junior is selected for the vice- presidency of the high school, this year we watched and took part in a very heated election. Tom Powers was victorious in this election, and he automatically becomes president of the entire student body in his senior year. Other junior officers include: President,Wayne Low- ery, vice president, Lloyd Hammond, secretary, 'Cecelia Collinsg treasurer, Bonnie Baran. The junior student council representatives are Joan Bennett, Mary Lynch, Paul White, and John Newberry. In the junior year boys are varsity squad members of athletic teams. Girls may join G. A. C. for the first time. Juniors boast members of almost every club in the school, in addition to band, chorus, and other groups. As juniors, there are two main projects, the junior prom, which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed, and the junior play, this year entitled Spring Green , which was, as always, enthusi- astically worked on. Certainly being a junior is important, not only because it is a plateau in learning but also because it is of vital importance in social knowledge. JUHIUR CLHSS Obey signs? The 7th graders realize when they come to assembly on the first day of school how different this year will be from their previous years. Now they are actually in high school' and have the thrill of passing classes and of meeting new teachers for each subject. They also make new friends who are coming from different school districts. The 7th graders add home ec, gym, and shop to their curriculum for the first time. They also have more extensive study in art and music. Included in their new activities are participation in Junior High chorus, participation in the band, and participation in election of delegates to junior high Student Council. The 7th grade also attends and participates in assembly programs. Indeed, this year is a big step for the class of 1963 on the road to knowledge. 7th GRADE iq-om? 1st Row- P. Webster, P. Concentrated efforts during 'your school life have made this achievement possible. you have found that only those reach the goal who are willing to sacrifice in terms of time, effort and energy. You are now rewarded for these out- standing characteristics and by continuing study many more such milestones now lie within your grasp. Graduation, now what? You are standing at a crossroads of your life. From this point on, your paths will separate. Where are you going from here? You must aim toward other goals. It will be impossible for you to remain in the same position in which you now stand. Out of sheer necessity you must plot a course, for no one can travel the road of life successfully who knows not where he is going. This graduation will smooth out these obstacles. Once you have set an ultimate goal you must decide how you will reach it. Perhaps this will be easier if arranged in a series ofpreliminary goals. A person cannot jump from the bottom of the stairs to the top in a single leap but must progress upward in a systematic climb until the summit is reached. Remember, as you climb this stairway of life you must use ethical procedures. What you are is meaningless unless you arrive at the goal with honor. People are revered for actions and deeds rather than position. Congratulations: but not good-bye. Our roads will cross in the future. May the road you choose be one of happiness and success.
