TO THE SENIORS OF l957: It was my pleasure about a year ago to be one of more than 4000 people to hear a speech by Kenneth McFarland which he entitled The Lamp Lighters. The thoughts he expressed I will never forget and I would like to share them with you. A lamp lighter in this case is one who, through his associa- tions with other people, puts a new light in their faces. No worthier ambition could pervade the heart of anyone. lt can apply to every walk of life. lt will lead to happy and success- ful living. The first characteristic of these lamp lighters is that they must have an inner light of their own. lt is this inner light that lets them see how to do the right thing properly. lt permits them to see how things are with the other person and thus how to get into their lives with them. It is this understanding that prevents one from making the tragic mis- take of believing that there are two sets of rules, one for himself and one for other people. o keep refueled. lt must be a spirit To keep this inner light, one must have a source from which t ual source potent enough to produce an emotional drive that will keep one doing the right thing. Merely to know the right thing is not enough. lt is the doing that brings the satisfaction and makes one become like the lamp lighter of old that Sir Harry Lauder liked to tell about in his home town in Scotland. The old lamp lighter went from street light to street light, climbed a ladder and ingnited the wick. All who came by later, though they did not see the lamp lighter, knew where he had been by the glow of the lamps he had lighted. Sincerely, ,WM

You have an appointment with the future. Each graduating class feels that it is meeting the greatest problems and challenges the if world has ever known, and, perhaps, that is true. As man has increased his knowledge and applied it to controlling his environmenthe has created multitudes of new problems which has caused a demand for more education and new skills. Long accepted moral, political and social standards have been challenged. As scientific and' technological advances have been made, the complexity of living has increased and con- tinues to increase. Thus, each graduating class feels its chal- lenge is the greatest and yours is no exception. Precedi ng generations have made their contributions to science, literature, the arts, religion, political science and all areas of human endeavor. They have explored the unknown and at times people has asked what is left to be done '? Un- til now you have been assimi- luring a knowledge of work, ac- complishments and failures of past generations. Today you are standing on the threshold of a new world--one much more chal- lenging than that faced by Columbus, more exciting than that of Edison, more demanding than that of Churchill. Although mankind has made wonderful advances in the physical aspects of living, he has iust begun. Undreamed of developments lie ahead. But it is in living with each other that man has most consistently failed. ln the years which lie ahead challenge lies in the modification and control of our socio-economic machinery and governments so that all peoples of the world may share the products of science and automation in peace, mutual respect and confi- dence. Sharing in this challenge is the appointment you have. It is our hope that you will be found willing and prepared to keep your appointment and in keeping it we wish for you every happiness and success. Sincerely, cc..I,fJZ,,L 9

Athens High School is very fortunate to have three such devoted and efficient secretaries as Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Southee, and Mrs. Rogers. Mrs. Arnold serves as secretary to Dr. Fitch and to the Board of Education. Mrs. Rogers, who assists in the main office, is also doing a fine job. Mrs. Southee, Mr. Hazard's capable sec- retary, is also a friend and counselor to all of the students of the high school. 'l 'l
