Evgenikas, Athens High School's adopted orphan girl from Greece. In the past, the yearbooks have dedicated to a person who has been a help to all of us or a team which has brought us great honor and pride. This year, however, we are dedicating the book to Anna because we feel that she has contributed as much to A. H. S. through her faith and courage as any of us who are lucky enough to live in the United States. gf.-m. I MEMORI . . . . .To William Zurn, without whom the class of 1957 will never be the same . We can never Fully show our appreciation to Bill for all he gave us, both physically and spiritually. Although he is no longer with us, he will always be a part of our class. FOREWGRD Between the Susquehanna and the Chemung rivers stands the small town of Athens, Penn- sylvania, while 7,000 miles away in the Mediterranean Sea, the age-old city of Athens, Greece, stands shrouded in her past glories. ln Athens, Pennsylvania, about 2242 young people attend school in one of the finest educational systems in the world, but the children of many other coun- tries such as Greece are not so fortunate. Unfortunately, we Americans are not always quick to realize this fact. Many years ago, an early settler, who came to what was then Tioga Point, stated that the town reminded him of Athens, Greece, because of the geographical similarity. The citizens of the community became interested and the name of the town was changed to Athens. Today we students of the Senior Class base the theme of our book on Athens, Greece. PARSONS Sheshequin MR, M, WANCK Sheshequin Lincoln Neiley, You have an appointment with the future. Each graduating class feels that it is meeting the greatest problems and challenges the if world has ever known, and, perhaps, that is true. As man has increased his knowledge and applied it to controlling his environmenthe has created multitudes of new problems which has caused a demand for more education and new skills. Long accepted moral, political and social standards have been challenged. As scientific and' technological advances have been made, the complexity of living has increased and con- tinues to increase. Thus, each graduating class feels its chal- lenge is the greatest and yours is no exception. Precedi ng generations have made their contributions to science, literature, the arts, religion, political science and all areas of human endeavor. They have explored the unknown and at times people has asked what is left to be done '? Un- til now you have been assimi- luring a knowledge of work, ac- complishments and failures of past generations. Today you are standing on the threshold of a new world--one much more chal- lenging than that faced by Columbus, more exciting than that of Edison, more demanding than that of Churchill. Although mankind has made wonderful advances in the physical aspects of living, he has iust begun. Undreamed of developments lie ahead. But it is in living with each other that man has most consistently failed. ln the years which lie ahead challenge lies in the modification and control of our socio-economic machinery and governments so that all peoples of the world may share the products of science and automation in peace, mutual respect and confi- dence. Sharing in this challenge is the appointment you have. It is our hope that you will be found willing and prepared to keep your appointment and in keeping it we wish for you every happiness and success. Sincerely, cc..I,fJZ,,L 9 TO THE SENIORS OF l957: It was my pleasure about a year ago to be one of more than 4000 people to hear a speech by Kenneth McFarland which he entitled The Lamp Lighters. The thoughts he expressed I will never forget and I would like to share them with you. A lamp lighter in this case is one who, through his associa- tions with other people, puts a new light in their faces. No worthier ambition could pervade the heart of anyone. lt can apply to every walk of life. lt will lead to happy and success- ful living. The first characteristic of these lamp lighters is that they must have an inner light of their own. lt is this inner light that lets them see how to do the right thing properly. lt permits them to see how things are with the other person and thus how to get into their lives with them. It is this understanding that prevents one from making the tragic mis- take of believing that there are two sets of rules, one for himself and one for other people. o keep refueled. lt must be a spirit To keep this inner light, one must have a source from which t ual source potent enough to produce an emotional drive that will keep one doing the right thing. Merely to know the right thing is not enough. lt is the doing that brings the satisfaction and makes one become like the lamp lighter of old that Sir Harry Lauder liked to tell about in his home town in Scotland. The old lamp lighter went from street light to street light, climbed a ladder and ingnited the wick. All who came by later, though they did not see the lamp lighter, knew where he had been by the glow of the lamps he had lighted. Sincerely, ,WM Athens High School is very fortunate to have three such devoted and efficient secretaries as Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Southee, and Mrs. Rogers. Mrs. Arnold serves as secretary to Dr. Fitch and to the Board of Education. Mrs. Rogers, who assists in the main office, is also doing a fine job. Mrs. Southee, Mr. Hazard's capable sec- retary, is also a friend and counselor to all of the students of the high school. 'l 'l MR. RICHARD B. BAITY Mansfield State Teachers College B. S. Under the present set-up, the student body elects the vice president from the iunior class and the following year he in turn becomes president of the high school. The secretary and treasurer are elected b the student council. The officers are John Lynch, president, Vince Raupers, vice president, Mary Alice Cimmons, secretary, and Jack Northrup, treasurer. The student council has a meeting scheduled every week over which the high school president, John Lynch, Pl'6SlCl6SUI1CleI'l'he supervision of our faculty advisor, Dr. Clyde Bresee. Two of the recent ma'or achievements of the student council are the organizing of a Junior High Student Council an the adoption of an orphan from Greece, whom the students of A.H.S. are now faithfully supporting. Every Thursday the student council could be found busily forming new laws and revising the old ones. Many motions promoted fiery discussions which ended in either a new law or in reiec tion by a majority of the vote. This year, effective legislation concerning sanitation, courtesy and responsibility has been passed--proving that our student council is an ever functioning organization . The functions of the student council are to make rules for the good of the school and to help with the general planning and functioning of school affairs. lt is considered an honor to be a member of the student council. Rosenberger, E. Jones L' N' fieion STUDENT CQUNCIL The Junior High Student Council is made up of I6 members, all of whom are from 7th, 8th, and, 9th grades. The able officers are as follows: Gerald Harding, the hardworking president, Robert Weiss supporting vice pres- ident, Gloria Slater the secretary, Jack Firestine the treasurer, and Jo Anne Baker correspondent. Since the Junior High Student Council is a new organ- ization at Athens, a committee has drawn up a constitution this year consisting of standards and rules. The purpose of the council is stated and how members are elected and how they are removed fif need bel, with amendments and by- laws. The constitution was read twice before the council and was accepted. The Junior High Student Council works independently of the Senior High Student Counci although the two councils did have a meeting together about the Honor System. There were three Junior High Student Council representatives, three Senior High, and three faculty members present. One of their accomplishments was their collection for Charles Doty's family whose home burned. Larry Green delivered Sl8.22 to this f0mllY which was Collected from Junior Hl9l1 homerooms only. The Junior High Student Council worked on the following problems: snowballing at noon hours, a cleaning campaign of the school grounds, and suggestion boxes in the shop and in the Home Economics building. This newly formed organization fills a long felt need in our rapidly growing school. I. EDITOR: R. Elsbree EDITOR: D. Klinko Few people realize the tremen- dous amount of work which is re- quired to put out the Athenian. The publication of this yearbook was no exception. First the staff has to pick a theme for the book and get the first installment to the publisher. With hard work and a little luck these feats were accomplished. After the Christmas vacation, the staff settles down on the second copy. SEATED: Mrs. Alger, Mr. Tidlow. STANDING: Mr. Martin, Mr. Hazard, ATH EN IAN SEATED: I. Hurd, J. Babcock. STANDING: F. Typical activities of the F.T.A. are student teaching, story-telling, tutor- ing, and observing classes on various grade levels. Last year such industries as Du Pont, Sylvania, Ingersoll Rand, and Westinghouse con- tributes prizes of bonds and gold cups. Prizes consisted of a Grand Prize plus first and second prizes for each division . The fair is held in the Towanda S. C. I.Building. Last year The Dail Review assumed responsibility-o-f sgfihlg up tables and preparing the hall. The Evening Times rinted all entr blanfs. Judges froTn-Syljvania, Ingersoll Rand, and the Robert Packer Hospital as well as individuals not affiliated with any scientific concern. To qualify to enter a student must be takingascience course. He must submit an entry blank for one of the following classes: Biology, Human Biology, Engineering, Conservation, General Science, Physics, or chemistry. Each student is allowed a 3 x 4 foot space and must set up his exhibit only. Last year, Bill Reynolds won first ltlubeissfsznwmi lm and PQIIRTTI Suppiy war k Y fTT3iif?f3i Tr.3m5m'il lm Q6 is S 'Bm prize in the Human Biology division with an exhibition of the circulatory system. Bill Molyneaux won onorable mention on his self made lucite base transmitter and power plant. Other entries were a model of the brain by Nancy Fitch, a one-tube radio by James Pruyne, and a leaf collection by SCIENCE FAIR Marilyn and Carolyn Lupton. When President Bill Molyneaux opens the Science Club meeting every week, anything can happen. Generally the meeting takes the form ofa bull session in which members discuss their Science Fair proiects-- this has on occasion led to vigorous, but friendly arguments, giving Secre- tary Sandra Rowe some interesting things to record, especially when the subiect of solar batteries and elec- tronics comes up. Sometimes we have speakers, and we plan to take a couple of trips to places like Sylvania before the year's end. Our main purpose is preparing pro- jects, discussing our ideas and telling about the progress made is an incentive for working, and much of the friendly ciriticism goes into the proiects in the shape of improvements. We are cer- tain that our members will make a fine showing this year at Athens. SCIENCE CLUB FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Pruyne, J. Havens, L. Krearner, N. Fitch. SECOND ROW: B. Wallin, B. To add to the wintery effect, many small trees sprinkled with snow were in the setting. To complete the theme title, Fantasy in Frost , an enormous revolving snow- man was the center of attraction in the gym. Music was provided by the Starlight- ers Orchestra, whiCl'1 contributed greatly to the success of this year's Junior Prom. Featured at one of our most out-stand ing events of the year, was the crowning of the king and queen. It is the first perfect season since 1951. The first R. T. L. win was over Towanda which proved to be another easy vic tory: The Bulldogs came through brilliantly in the traditional encounter with our big rival, Sayre. For the fourth and fifth wins the Bulldogs racked up big scores over Newark Valley and Edison High. Troy was whipped for another R. T. L. win. Can- ton, su posedly the big game of the year, was crusheclband the Bulldogs took the R. T. L. Championship. During the half time of the Homecoming game CCantonJ, Elaine Perry was crowned football queen, attended by Sandra Scaife and Mary Alice Cimmons. Waverly was the final victim for the Bulldogs, winding up an undefeated season of eight games. As the whistle blew for opening practice a brand new Athens Junior Varsity football team took the field. Ed Chase was new at the posi- tion of J. V. coach although he had served as assistant to the varsity coach, John Childs, the previous ear. Coach Chase, a confirmed disciple of the Split T formation had come up with a bunch of fleet backs who ran like the proverbial scared rabbit and a rugged gang of linemen who were harder to crack than a stone wall. September 29th the team made its debut under the lights at the Lockhart Street Bowl. lt was the young Bulldogs all the way 26-7. lt continued thus throughout the season, until the Waverly game when having put up a tough struggle in the torrenting rain, the Bulldogs had to settle for a 6-6 tie. Athens' young Bulldogs finished the season with a 4 wins l tie record plus the J.V. Roosevelt Trail League title and the Valley Championship. This organization is made up of sixty boys and girls who are genuinely interested in music and who are under the competent guidance of Miss Wood. These sixty are divid- ed into four groups: altos, tenors, sopranos, and basses. This year the accompanist for this group is Danice Noldy, an excellent pianist. These boys and girls are representa- tives from grades ten, eleven, and twelve. Every Tuesday and Thurdsay this hard working group meets during fifth period. The chorus rehearsals are defi- nitely not in vain, appearances. In the winter, the chorus presents a Christ- itional dramatization of the Christmas story, and new Christmas songs. The members of the cast wear uniform clothes for these performances. The girls usually wear white blouses and dark skirts while the boys harmonize with this combination by wearing white shirts and dark trousers. mas Concert. The performers dress in a manner appropriate to this special occasion. The girls are gaily bedecked in color- ful evening gowns and the boys are neatly arrayed in their white shirts and dark trousers. The chorus also sings for the last and most memorable performance of all--commencement. This year for the first time the members of this organization elected a Chorus Board. The officers on this board are Jack Riley, president, and Lloyd Hammond, secretary. Represent- atives from each section: P. Blauvelt, soprano, Stan Hugo, tenor, John Lynch, bass, and Joan Kandelin, alto. The pur- pose of this board is to select the music for the chorus and help plan concerts. Members of the chorus represent our school at various events. This year there were twelve students sent to the county chorus at Wyalusing. District chorus, held in Tunkhannock included our representatives Joan Kandelin, Clair Wandell, and Jack Northrup. Clair Wandell was the delegate to state chorus which was held in Washington, Pa. The endless hours of preparation are rewarded by the sterling perform- ance which the chorus members present and the audience hears. LEFT TO RIGHT: L. Robinson, N, Storelli, C. Originally it was only a sextette, but in order to be a more general music group it was enlarged to become the Triple Trio. The girls are representatives from the junior and senior classes. Besides the vocalists, the accompanist is a student--this year it is Danice Noldy, a very talented pianist. The Triple Trio, needless to say, is composed of nine girls singing alto, second so rano, and soprano. The girls chosen for this club must have real singing ability. Incidentaliy, these girls sing in three parts which is more difficult than singing in unison. The members of the organization for the past years have been wearing identical outfits. This year the were neatly bedecked in grey dresses with a saucy red trim. These girls can be seen practicing every Wednesday for an hour after school. When they perform for special programs they practice at least twice a week. Their efforts are reward- ed, for they sing for assembly programs and Baccalaureate, also for such organizations as the Lions Club, Library Club, University Club, Eastern Star, Monday Club, radio station W. A. T. S. and the Christmas and Spring concerts. They sing a wide variety of music rang- ing from classical favorites to excerpts from operettas. Our school has received many compliments after the performances of these girls. We at Athens High School are proud and honored to have such a talented group in our school. This year the annual Christ- mas Concert was presented by the Senior High chorus, aided by the Triple Trio under the direction of Miss Emma Wood. To start the Christmas Concert in the spirit, the chorus proceeded down the aisle singing O Come All Ye Faithful . A few members carried candles which shone brightly in the dimmed auditor- num. The first half of the program consisted of a number of reli- gious songs. Each was narrated by a member of the chorus. During the intermission Jack Northrup presented Aunt Emma with C1 gift of the chorus's esteem and appreciation for her never- ending interest in the chorus. .1 CHRISTMAS CONCERT The second half portrayed the opposite aspect of Christmas. The scene was a busy city side walk with couples hurrying to finish their last minute shopping. The Triple Trio presented a number of songsp one of them was Mr. Santa who was por- trayed by Norman Allen. The stage was decorated by two huge toy store windows. There were also two lamp posts on either end. All this led to a very successful and enjoyable concert. X1 Q, iff? ww 3 3 , f , X, :gy-li :kr ,Q ,www - nw - ' ' +L, 1 5 A. ,z--E: f . These members have helped to make the appear ances ofthe Senior High Chorus in such activities as graduation, Christmas con- certs, and cantatas a full success. In the soprano section there are Phyliss Blauvelt, Margo Eike, Janet Hunsinger, Marcia Mullen, Wilma Park- er, Sandra Scaife, and Barbara Zulkosky The altos consist of Nancy Alexander, Judy Baker, Joan Kandelin, Connie North, Elaine Perry, Barbara Rider, and Lois Robinson. George Ford, Stanle Hugo, John Northrup, Jack Riley, gary Sumner, and Clair Wandell make up the tenor section. Basses are Duane Klinko and John Lynch. Danice Noldy is the accompanist this year after two years of singing. SENIOR BAND MEMBERS The Athens Senior Band is going to suffer a great loss when these nine musi cians graduate. All nine have been in the band For the last four years. Duane and Clair have been in the Senior Band since sixth grade. Out of this nine we have four very able trumpet players. They are Duane Klinko, Clair Wandell, Janet Hunsing- er, and Ernest Beam. Margo Eike is the First clarinet, while Marcia Mullen is the second clarinet in the band. Jack Northrup plays a French horn. Dorothy Bennett plays a nice baritone and Jo AnnSimons is a very good saxaphonist. Band sweaters were received by these nine band members for being in the band for three years. DISTRICT BAND Each year, the Pennsylvania Ed- ucators Association holds the district chorus and band. These events are held in one of the 60 schools which make up our district. Each of these schools select its finest vocalists and musicians and submits their names to the P.M.E.A. headquarters, which selects the students For the event. This year, .loan Kandelin, Jack Northrup, and Clair Wandell were selected for the district chorus. On January l7, they tra'-feled to Tunk- hannoch to participate in the three- day event. DISTRICT CHORUS Upon arrival they were assigned to the private home where they were to stay and begin practice immedi- ately. After their grueling days of har practice, the chorus gave a very fine concert on Saturday night to cli- max the festival . One month later the annual dis- trict band was held in Clark Summit. Four students from Athens were fortu- nate enough to be chosen for this event. They were Margo Eike, Lynn Cooper, Leigh Cooper and Bob Sickler These students Followed the same pro- cedure as the chorus members, wind- ing up with a wonderful concert on Saturday, February l6. CAFETERIA Each day, about eleven o'clock, the pleasant aroma of the forthcoming dinner finds its wa through the halls of Athens High Schooll. The maiority of the students eat in the cafeteria where they enioy a well- balanced meal served daily, which is planned with the provisions of the Na- tional School Lunch Act in mind. These meals are pre ared under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Shannon, Manager, and her co-workers, Mrs. Ann Gordon, Mrs. Joyce Brennan, and Mrs. Pearl Parke. The cafeteria is a non-profit proiect which was established in I949 and has been running successfully ever since. The cafeteria was built in the summer of that year to provide a warm, balanced lunch for students who are unable to go to their homes for lunch. The student body greatly appreciates the efforts put forth by the Board of Education and the Cafeteria Staff to provide a lunch program. Few students and people connected with the school realize the tremendous amount of work that is done by Mrs. Stowell, Charles Throp, Thomas Hol- bert, and Russell Seymour for the school. They are always willing to help with such things as dances, plays, and other off-the-job activities. During the school day this helpful foursome can be seen hurrying around to keep our school neat and tidy all the way around. Everyone connected with the school should thank all of these people personally for the helpful and co-operative way they have made it possible for all of us to be proud of our school.
