AUt siicut ca+neA to you. DEDICATION Marie Bf.an • RIENDSHIP, understanding, and sympathetic assistance arc what you have always given us. Now, hoping that it will keep us fresh in your memory after we have left these battered walls of learning, we offer to you this book as a small reminder that wc have loved you through all the years that you have followed us up the ladder from our junior high school days until this, our last year. Therefore, as a token of our very sincere appreciation, we, the graduating class of ’44, dedicate our Athenian to our beloved Miss Bean—our teacher, faculty advisor, and dear friend. Probably never in the history of Athens High School have so many of the senior boys left their classes to take up assignments with the armed forces. Never before in the history of warfare has our nation needed to come into the classroom and call for educated boys to join in the struggle. But this is a war of specially trained men, of men whose natural aptitudes and high school training have made them alert and capable of quickly learning the specific training necessary for their various battle stations. We are proud to know that the members of the Class of 1944 have met the challenge of the day and that they will do their full share in assuming the responsibilities of this wartime and those of the years during peace and reconstruction. We congratulate all of you upon your graduation and promotion into the duties of life which immediately face you. Irving W. Hazard Principal Senior High School William S. Courtney Principal Junior High School To The Class of 1944: While considering what I might say to you in this column, the following letter from a hoy at the front came to my attention. “Dear Folks, “It’s either a feast or a famine. After over a month with no mail, I receive 62 letters all at once. Grandpa’s death came rather as a shock since I didn’t happen to read the letters in chronological order. You are right about my having seen death in far sadder forms. I am not speaking of those who die for their country but those who die through the carelessness and ignorance of others. Death is not sad if, in dying, a man accomplishes something worth dying for. Neither is death that is merely the climax of a worthwhile life. I hope my death is one of these two kinds.” I believe that I can do no better for my parting message to you than to quote these words, weighted as they are by the front line experience of the writer. Mr. Courtney left Athens High School this year to become a Red Cross field director after having served both as principal and teacher in our Junior High School. He will be remembered always by the faculty and students as the one who would lend a hand whenever needed. Mr. Courtney was a good sport and he instilled the same in his football teams which he coached for a number of years. He brought into junior high school many-new projects such as student government and various other organizations which you will find still existing in the school. We all know there is a big job to be done and Mr. Courtney will do all he can for our boys. Best of luck to a good scout, our Mr. Courtney. But we are seniors and we arc proud of the record which we leave behind. We have produced two successful plays, a senior evening long to be remembered, and many dances. We have contributed this yearbook so full of memories, many clean fighting athletes, and scholastic records that will be hard to beat. Although our class is quite small, totaling sixty-five, it has proven itself capable of completing any task set before it: and we feel that the boys of this class who are in the service will prove themselves in the same manner. 12 ; Seniors EDITH BEERS Edith’s ready sminf greets you on every corner. We all know that she wants to be a beautician and that her recently acquired devotion for the Navy comes from the “boy across the street.” JAMES BOWEN “Jim’s” trusty Ford is still off the scrap pile. He is always willing to give you a lift. Six feet of fun and laughs is our Jim. JANE BRACE Jane’s quiet reserved attitude leads you to believe that she’s docile, but we seniors who know disagree. JOHN BRENNAN His mechanical mind helps when a car has to be repaired. We’re sorry John has had some bad luck, but we hope his recovery will be swift. FANNIE BROWN Fannie’s beautiful smile and helping hand make her well-liked by teachers and students. We hope “Paca” reaches her goal in the Dramatic world. GRACE BROWN Grace’s eyes are at a distance since Rod has become a sailor. Small, attractive, she’s an asset to our class. JOHN CAHILL Defending the Irish is John’s favorite pastime. He’s new but his friendly smile attracted us all, and the Navy’s lucky to have him. STANLEY CARMAN With his good looks and smooth personality “Stan” has a way with women. Does he walk with a sailor’s gait? MARJORIE COLE With her willowy stature and joviality “Margie” is a combination of grace and charm. NATHAN COLE “Nate” has been with us for only two years. His ability on the football field and basketball court has proven Nate’s athletic aptitude. 13 ► Seniors BETTY JANE COLWELL New but she gets her laugh in with the rest of us. We’re glad to have had her with us even this short time. PHYLLIS CORNEBY Who is more quiet than Phyllis during second-period study hall? And a blonde, too! We’re sure she’ll be a success in anything she undertakes. DONALD DAVIS Our only future doctor. “Don” should be a success with his background. ALBERTA EVANS A shy ambitious maid. Why can’t we all work hard like “Berta”? RICHARD FINN Class character and all around American boy. Dick is also our president. We know your top-sergeants will be captivated by your personality, wit and talent. LOIS FORD Rose and blue make a nice combination when it’s Lois’ cheeks and eyes. She’s been a loyal classmate always. JOHN GALLAGHER “Jack’s” athletic ability and Irish Blarney will get him a long way in this world. MARY CATHERINE HAINES There’s something about Mary Catherine that attracts friends in clusters. We are exceptionally fond of her and of her devotion to her sailor. ALBERTA HAKES An industrious girl with a quiet personality, she will be a great asset to an office. JAMES HAMMOND “Zig” is a great athlete who excels in sportsmanship. His heart is in everything he does. d 14 ! Seniors JAMES HANNON A quiet fellow with great musical talent. He’s persistent and always willing to help. WARREN HARDING Warren’s quiet, friendly, and persuasive manner will gain him many insurance clients. He is always willing to laugh with the crowd. MARION HASTINGS “Mamie’s” drawn out tales and winning personality make her one of our outstanding classmates. We’re sure she’ll make a typical Florence Nightengale. MARCELINE HETTIG “Jeannie’s” jokes are her greatest assets. We wish you luck in your life’s ambitions. WILLIAM HINKSON “Bill” has a sense of humor and puts it to good advantage in study hall. He especially likes short girls. RICHARD HUFF If his feet were a little bigger he’d be half way home! Dick is willing and capable of doing most anything. JEAN HUNSINGER One of our favorite people is Jean. She usually likes the same things John does. JOHN ISBELL John loves to talk and is always excitedly running for some reason or other. No matter how busy he is he always has plenty of time for Jean. ARTHUR JACKSON “Butch’s” hearty laugh is keenly missed since he’s in the Navy. We wish him good luck and bon voyage. DONALD JACKSON Don is the life of the study hall and can always laugh heartily over anything. His unscheduled outbursts are a cause of concern to his teachers and a source of merriment to his classmates. 15 f. Seniors JOHN JACKSON Ever a leader, “Jack’s” brilliance will lead him far. His great aptitude for study is equaled by his outstanding athletic ability and his quiet humor. BETTY KNIFF1N Betty is always a cheerful spot in a gloomy day. She will listen to your troubles and then cheer you up with a joke. SALLY LENOX ‘‘Sal’s” quick wit makes her the life of the party of which she attends many with that certain Sophomore. Sally will be able to keep her patients in stitches. ALBERTA LEWIS Bert” has a highly infectious laugh and will always “go to bat” for you if you’re in distress. “Speed” loves to argue, but in a nice way and her good looks make her always a favorite. MARY ANNE LUCY Along with her corny jokes, pint size, and good sportsmanship we give the world one swell kid. “Shorty” will have a contented brood in her orphanage. BETTY MACAFEE Betty’s red hair is the basis for her nick name. We’re glad her temper does not coincide. IRVIN MACAFEE “Help all who ask” is his motto. Blond hair, intelligent blue eyes, add them together and they equal “Irv”. FREDERICK MARYOTT Tall silent “Fred” may some day put his knowledge of farming to a good advantage. SIDNEY MITCHELL A second Sinatra is “Sid” whose mind is always at ease. “Sid” made a great center for our football team. JOYCE MOORE The depth of understanding is reflected in Joyce’s eyes. A colorful college career is certainly in store for Joyce. -■4 16 ) . ♦ . Seniors KENNETH MUNN “Kenny”, tall and lanky, with his dark curly hair, is always a friendly, smiling companion. LOUISE MUNN Louise is a sweet girl with a pleasing personality. She can harmonize in more ways than one. PHYLLIS PAGE Phyllis’ studious and dependable manner will aid her in the study of music. Phyllis is well liked by everyone with whom she is in contact. BEVERLY PARKS Another blonde, “Bev”, is attached to her clarinet. She also plays a nice tune on a typewriter. KENNETH PARKS We all like “Kenny” and miss him since he’s in the Navy. We hope Uncle Sam grants him many leaves so he’ll be around often. ROBERT PATTERSON “Mort” is sought after by many. His characteristically friendly manner and his good sportsmanship make him a universal favorite. We hope to be seeing him soon in his Navy blues. JACK PEARN Jack is a hearty fellow with many aptitudes. He always gives a cheery greeting wherever you sec him. EDWARD RAUB “Ed” is a big help when you’re trying to find various articles on the grocery shelves. We like his friendly manner. ALTON REEVES A deep booming voice announces Alton. This is sure to help his theological career. LEO REGAN Leo’s good looks and charming personality make him this year’s “Prince Charming”. Watch out for those talent scouts, Leo, or you’ll end up in the movies instead of the Navy. 17 ) Seniors GLENN ROBERTS “Hcrby” is a good friend and a great sport. He can always laugh at a joke even when it’s on himself. FRANCIS ROBINSON “Fran” had a few tough breaks, but he was able to overcome them which proves his ability to take everything in his stride. JACQUELINE SHUMWAY “Jac” is always a good sport and will help you out in a crisis. Her attitude is always a friendly one. DAWN SLATER Dawn is a great favorite with her friends. Her skill in basketball makes her the envy of the opposing team. DANA SMITH You can always use a dictionary when talking to Dana. He has a lot on his friends. PHYLLIS SMITH She hasn’t wasted any time getting results from her stenographic ability. “Fi-Fi’s” beautiful well-kept brown hair brings out her personal pride. BETTY STEPHENS Though Betty is short, her personality makes up for her stature. This together with her beautiful hair and charming smile make one swell girl. EDMUND STRUBLE A quiet, well-dressed, young man is “Ed” who has a way of causing laughs through his cartoons. ANNA SULLIVAN Anna’s independent spirit hides under her reserved matter-of-fact manner. SHIRLEY TALADA Shirley’s jokes and contagious laughter keeps the study hall in an uproar a good share of the time. 4. 18 j Seniors VIRGINIA TALADA We like “Ginny” because she is a thinker and a swell person. We hope her goal in life is reached and that she achieves happiness. ALICE THOMPSON Alice’s dimples and winning smile make her beloved by all. She has much drawing ability, to be a private secretary is her aim. JAMES VAN SCOTEN “Van” is always a great tease, but his antics never lose him friends. Since his acceptance in the Navy Jim has left an empty spot in our classroom and in our hearts. LOIS WELLER Lois is noted for her chatter and her good looks. Her charm attracts many people to her father’s theater, but her heart is ever with Dick. HELEN YOUNG Helen though quiet and retiring makes an excellent friend. We cherish our friendship with her. ★ In Their Country’s Service ★ John Cahill, U. S. Navy Stanley Carman, U. .S'. Navy Richard Finn, U. S. Army Richard E. Huff, U. S. Navy Rodney Humphrey, U. S. The lipstick that always comes off—Bombshell Red and Splatterproof. The girls that always seem so bored. The way the girls discuss all the boys behind their backs. Their way of thinking they have a priority on all the fellows. Their utter conceit. The piano legs in high heels. Firemen’s red nail polish and two-inch fingernails. Her manner of acting too sophisticated for her age. Her giggle. Her much too serious side. Always being stood up. Her desire to keep up with the fellows by smoking and drinking. Her hats. Her alibis she can think up for not keeping a date. Her way of keeping you waiting until the wee hours of the morning before she’s ready to go out. How she always seems to order the most expensive item on the menu when you’re “darn near broke.” Her beating around the bush. ■ !{ 22 What She Dislikes About Him The way the fellows throw the girls around like potato sacks. Their color schemes. The way the fellows compare the girls as to necking technique. The way they treat all women as inferior beings. His spending so much time combing his hair and then forgets his fingernails. The way he prefers foreign women. H is belief in “variety as the spice of life.” His habit of giving all the orders. His cattincss in voicing his opinion of women. The way he sits around at a dance chatting with the fellows while the girls wilt against the wall. When he takes you out on a date and doesn’t have enough to pay the check. How he gets his dates mixed and then works in shifts. The wolfish gleam in his eye at sight of an unfamiliar face. When he spends his time talking about the girl he had out the night before. His seeming enjoyment of embarrassing girls in public. His habit of telling a girl to wait “right there” for a couple of minutes and turns up about three hours later. His limited vocabulary which causes him to swear at every other word. I low he makes a date and then comes down and spends the evening sleeping on the sofa. His starting to tell a joke and then stopping in the middle with the explanation. “You wouldn’t understand it anyway.” 4 23 } Havens, Comstock, Conrad, Daskam, Donlin, Deuel, Furman, Custer, Blostein, Jenney, Davidson, Inman.
