r THENS HIGH SCHOOL is the scene and stage for glorious events leading to the threshold of a new world for a new generation. For many years our Alma Mater has presented to our Nation and Community citizens of which it may be justly proud and to whom it may look forward to building up its prestige and high standards. Now, once again, as Commencement approaches, Athens High says farewell to another body of future citizens, who, holding its advice and teachings in mind, will surely progress in their new world to the credit of their former Guardian. But even though another Senior Class has passed through its portals, it can still look forward to more and more generations of citizens who will step from its classrooms into a world that holds great things in store. And as we and they, the classes yet to come, progress forward, we shall look back and remember with gratitude that we were among those who received their first real incentives and training in Athens High. THEME To you, the team of 1942-43 and to your coach, Mr. Oakes, we, the students, do with the greatest admiration dedicate this, our yearbook. Your deeds and prowess shall be preserved in the time-old annals of Athens High School to be revered by all who may pass through its portals. From being a team which was destined from the beginning not to exist, you seemingly sky-rocketed to glory and victor)-. But to you that meant work, sacrifice, and courage and these, complemented with the wisdom and endless patience of our far-seeing coach, led you up the heretofore intangible path of victory. Oh yes, we were proud. Whenever those blue and silver-white uniforms splashed across a field, there were many a tear of joyful and excited pride. ’Tis true we toasted you with dinners and banquets, boundless speeches and good wishes. But was this enough for our championship team? For the squad that triumphed over their most potent rival, that feat being accomplished last in 1932? There must be some more lasting means of preserving that unprecedented record of an undefeated team. Thus to fill this capacity, standing challenging!)-in the trophy case, is found the awe-inspiring trophy presented to this unparalleled team by the Chamber of Commerce. But we, the students, wish to press further. We feel it is our privilege to do you further homage by dedicating our yearbook as a lasting monument to the worthy lads of the ’42-'43 team and their coach who have brought honor and glory to A. H. S. For most there will be a new coach, a new captain, and new team mates. -There will be a different battle to fight and a greater victory to win. But always will the sense of fairplay, leadership, and greatness of character developed in these recent struggles be with you.
