r THENS HIGH SCHOOL is the scene and stage for glorious events leading to the threshold of a new world for a new generation. For many years our Alma Mater has presented to our Nation and Community citizens of which it may be justly proud and to whom it may look forward to building up its prestige and high standards. Now, once again, as Commencement approaches, Athens High says farewell to another body of future citizens, who, holding its advice and teachings in mind, will surely progress in their new world to the credit of their former Guardian. But even though another Senior Class has passed through its portals, it can still look forward to more and more generations of citizens who will step from its classrooms into a world that holds great things in store. And as we and they, the classes yet to come, progress forward, we shall look back and remember with gratitude that we were among those who received their first real incentives and training in Athens High. Athens High School THE ATHENIAN 1943 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA THEME To you, the team of 1942-43 and to your coach, Mr. Oakes, we, the students, do with the greatest admiration dedicate this, our yearbook. Your deeds and prowess shall be preserved in the time-old annals of Athens High School to be revered by all who may pass through its portals. From being a team which was destined from the beginning not to exist, you seemingly sky-rocketed to glory and victor)-. But to you that meant work, sacrifice, and courage and these, complemented with the wisdom and endless patience of our far-seeing coach, led you up the heretofore intangible path of victory. Oh yes, we were proud. Whenever those blue and silver-white uniforms splashed across a field, there were many a tear of joyful and excited pride. ’Tis true we toasted you with dinners and banquets, boundless speeches and good wishes. But was this enough for our championship team? For the squad that triumphed over their most potent rival, that feat being accomplished last in 1932? There must be some more lasting means of preserving that unprecedented record of an undefeated team. Thus to fill this capacity, standing challenging!)-in the trophy case, is found the awe-inspiring trophy presented to this unparalleled team by the Chamber of Commerce. But we, the students, wish to press further. We feel it is our privilege to do you further homage by dedicating our yearbook as a lasting monument to the worthy lads of the ’42-'43 team and their coach who have brought honor and glory to A. H. S. For most there will be a new coach, a new captain, and new team mates. -There will be a different battle to fight and a greater victory to win. But always will the sense of fairplay, leadership, and greatness of character developed in these recent struggles be with you. DEDICATION Kenneth H. Huff Wesley Havens His Message “The starting point of advancement in the world is knowing where you are going, why you are going, whether the purpose is really worthwhile, and how you plan to get there. With a purpose determined, stick to it until you arrive.” This recent suggestion from an expert industrial personnel counselor sums up very briefly but truthfully some important guides for young people just finishing their high school courses. In these days of abnormal conditions which are present everywhere, there is a temptation to take things as they are, to let fate decide, to leave high school with a feeling of helplessness and that nothing can be done about it. Members of the Class of 1943, 1 wish to counteract this general attitude and to emphasize that you can do a great deal on your own part to prepare yourself to earn and achieve success. This is no time to surrender to circumstances. Continue your education all you possibly can and determine to prepare yourself better for whatever type of work you prefer and are capable of doing. Government and industry both want young men and women with education and preparation. May your determination to steer your course and not to drift be rewarded by the securing of a desirable place in life’s work and success in your endeavors. Eugene E. Crkdiford Supervising Principal Faculty Irving W. Hazard Principal Senior High School To Teachers By the guidance, wisdom, and understanding of these, our teachers, we have been successfully spirited through our high school careers and introduced to the great world of learning. It is with real regret that we must break our cordial relationships and bid farewell to our students whom we have come to know and to admire. The regret is leavened, however, with the hope that our year of work together will bring into your living through future years greater efficiency and, therewith, greater happiness. Miss Reagan Mr. Pruyne President Vice-President Secretary T reasurer .Advisors The years from 1941 to 1943 have been most eventful ones for this, our Senior Class. Our accomplishments and presentations to Athens High have been many, and we hope valuable. Two highly successful plays, an excellently produced Minstrel Show, and three well received dances, including our Junior Prom, will suffice to show our accomplishments. As to our presentations what could have been more valuable to our school than the fine athletes from our Senior Class who once again brought Athens back into the sportlights. Though an unusually small class for our school, we have tried and succeeded in holding up the standards of graduating classes from Athens. When all is said and done we have a fine class to be proud of with only one regret—that so many of our former members cannot be with us on Commencement night. However, we feel sure that they will achieve their reward in the victory of the democracies, and once again will the Class of ‘‘43” go down in history. 14 0 Lucille Andrus Lucy Doris Bassage Doric Phoebe Bidlack “Fobic” Klouise Black Blackic” Flossie Bradley “Floss Donald Burns “Percy Gerald Callear “Jerry Mildred Campbell Millie Mavis Case “Casey T h eresa Ch a m bers Terry 15 )• Joan Chandler Joanie Georgian n a Coombs “Gcorgie” Phyllis Custer Polly” Leon Daniels Mike” Richard DkWitt Dick” James Donlin Jim” Velma Dunning Giggles” Orlando Fairbanks Orly” Vivian Fairbanks Viv” 4 16 ) Mary Jane Farr Janie” Fred Fuller “Freda” Mary Griswold G Tizzy” Elsie Hager “Elsie” Ruth Hall “Ruthy” Charles Hammond “Chuck Milford Howard “Mil” Helen Inman “Sis” Lucille Jacklin “Jackie” Hazel Kin nek “Hazel 17 ) William Koose Koosie” Thomas Lord “Tom Maun Martin “Dewey” Pearle Maslin “Pear lie” Lucille Merrill “Lucy” Emma Miller Emmie” Paul Minier “Moe” Dale Moore “Orlando” Ada Oliver Ada Jane Helen Parks “Par key” Merle Park George” Raymond Park “Porky Donna Patton Patton Joyce Patterson “Pete Marilyn Patterson “Teddy Mary Slater “Slats Harold Shoemaker “Rip Beatrice Talada “Beat Bette Thrasher “B. We sincerely wish you the best of luck, and we know you will do your best to uphold the standards of Athens High School. In the many vital branches of America’s armed forces—the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and in the Women’s Auxiliaries—we feel sure that the education and training you have received at Athens High School will be of inestimable value to you. On the battle front you will be facing the greatest crises of your life-time; remember that the clubs and organizations to which you belonged endeavored to instill in you the qualities of leadership, dependability, trustworthiness. These qualities will help you to face these crises, and face them bravely. We, the present students of Athens High, realize how great a debt we owe you, our alumni, who are now fighting to preserve the finest things of the “American Way”—the Four Freedoms, our Constitution and all that it symbolizes, our churches, our public schools, our unlimited opportunity for the development of the individual, and all the other good and wholesome things we Americans love. As you go forth to do your duty for your country and your God, our hearts are with you. Message from Our President Stop and read here for a minute on your way through this edition of the Athenian. For this Athenian, my friends, represents Athens High School—Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, Teachers, Classes, Activities, a whole year of work and play. Now it is all over. In a few years we Seniors will have been forgotten by Athens High School. But we won’t forget, we can’t. We are not just taking knowledge from thiskjiigh school, but we are also taking friendships and memories that will live forever and be cherished by each one of us for years to come. That’s why we are editing this Athenian, because we are proud of all things it shows about our last year in high school. And. if in future years, other things crowd and press upon our minds we can and will turn back and go through our 1943 Athenian. We’ll enjoy it. because this is our school, and this was our year. And in closing I want to wish my fellow classmates the best of luck in their ventures into the outside world. I would also like to wish the future graduating classes of Athens High School the very best of everything. Harold E. Weller Jr. •Of 21 f Class ‘‘Oh, well done!
