William S. Courtney Principal Junior High School Your class is graduating during a period of uncertainty; one which sees this nation at war, and former schoolmates, graduates of Athens High School, killed in action at Pearl Harbor. Others are doing their bit in the Army, the Navy, Colleges, and the industrial defense plants of America. You, too, will enter this life and carry on with the ideals of Democracy uppermost in your heart, remembering that Democracy is more than a high-sounding symbol, or even an attitude — it is a way of life that results in greater justice and increased happiness for all. Therefore, Democracy must not only be learned — it must be lived. This means active participation by you in necessary duties, decisions, and responsibilities that will continue to confront you. There will always be a need for tolerance, good will, and a respect for all nationalities, races, creeds, occupational groups, and different political opinions. Live your own life; be yourself at every stage of the game and you will be a credit to yourself, your family, and your country. Irving W. Hazard Principal Senior High School Up to the present time yours is the largest class ever to be graduated from your Alma Mater. Looking ahead as far as one can, there is no graduating class in sight that will equal yours in numbers; and no class has ever been graduated at a more critical time in the history of our country. With these two facts in mind, one is led to the thought that the Class of 1942 is faced with the opportunity of making the greatest contribution to the welfare of our country of any class in the history of Athens High School. What your contribution as individuals will be, time alone can reveal. But it is our hope that your school experience has helped you greatly in learning the meaning of true patriotism, that those of you who may be called upon to die for your country will meet the ordeal bravely, and that those who are not called upon to make the supreme sacrifice will pay their debt to those that are by living always in the effort to make our country worth dying for.
