Board of Education Dr. A. G. Coughlin .. . Leon F. Loomis...... Dr. D. McClarty..... Ellery Bressler ................... President ................... Secretary .................... Treasurer Mrs. Martha D. Huff “True education means a firm grasp of principles by which we can generalize, reduce to method, group and shape our acquisitions. Otherwise our learning will master us when we ought to master our learning.”—(Newman). Doubtless, on the threshold of being graduated, you know all the answers. I hope that they are the correct ones. But honesty, reliability, truthfulness, character, and ambition guided in the right direction are at as much of a premium today as ever in the history of mankind. The association and guidance you have received from the faculty should enable you to obtain a clear apprehension of the great outline of knowledge, its principles, its great and small points. If you have acquired the habit of mind whose attitudes are freedom, calmness, moderation, and wisdom, you have the ground work of a liberal education, and the Athens High School will ever be proud of the Graduating Class of 1942. Eugene E. Crediford Supervising Principal You, the members of the Class of 1942, have the distinction of belonging to the largest class which has thus far been graduated from Athens High School, a record which is likely to stand for some time to come. You are now going out into a world which is far from normal. You will be forced to adjust your lives to the demands of a world which must speed up a mass production of war materials to the sacrifice of civilian needs. You will be faced with questions and problems which are both challenging and confusing, but my advice to you is that you should go on with your education if at all possible. The world will need well educated and prepared young people as never before. If you must take up work instead of going on to school, then do that work as worthily and conscientiously as possible, determined that you will do your full share in this time of immediate danger to our freedom and that you all will take an active part in building the new America of tomorrow'. 1 9 )•.
