EX LIBRIS ★ ★★★★★★★★ GOD BLESS AMERICA ★ THE ATHENIAN 1942 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL, ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA THEME This year We Seniors wish to express our deepest admiration for all former graduates and a faculty member of Athens High School who arc in the armed services—Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Corps, and Marines. In our high school they received their basic training which has prepared them so well for the gigantic task in which each of them is playing such a vital part. They have entered this grave afTair with heart and soul and with only one definite aim — victory for all of us. They will do anything to obtain this goal, even to making the supreme sacrifice of their lives as Bernard Hughes and Loren Beardsley have done already. On the following page are some snapshots of graduates who were in the Service at the time of the publishing of this annual. No doubt in another year many from this Senior class of 1942 will have taken their places in this struggle to continue our American way of life. All our hopes go with them and may God protect them in the dark days ahead. We salute them and to them we dedicate this annual. BERNARD L. HUGHES 1922-1941 LOREN BEARDSLEY 1918-1941 1. Otherwise our learning will master us when we ought to master our learning.”—(Newman). Doubtless, on the threshold of being graduated, you know all the answers. I hope that they are the correct ones. But honesty, reliability, truthfulness, character, and ambition guided in the right direction are at as much of a premium today as ever in the history of mankind. The association and guidance you have received from the faculty should enable you to obtain a clear apprehension of the great outline of knowledge, its principles, its great and small points. If you have acquired the habit of mind whose attitudes are freedom, calmness, moderation, and wisdom, you have the ground work of a liberal education, and the Athens High School will ever be proud of the Graduating Class of 1942. A. G. Coughlin Martha D. Hun- Dr. A. G. Coughlin Ellery Bressler Lf.on Loomis T. J. Cook Dr. D. McClarty Eugene E. Crediford Supervising Principal You, the members of the Class of 1942, have the distinction of belonging to the largest class which has thus far been graduated from Athens High School, a record which is likely to stand for some time to come. You are now going out into a world which is far from normal. You will be forced to adjust your lives to the demands of a world which must speed up a mass production of war materials to the sacrifice of civilian needs. You will be faced with questions and problems which are both challenging and confusing, but my advice to you is that you should go on with your education if at all possible. The world will need well educated and prepared young people as never before. If you must take up work instead of going on to school, then do that work as worthily and conscientiously as possible, determined that you will do your full share in this time of immediate danger to our freedom and that you all will take an active part in building the new America of tomorrow'. 1 9 )•. William S. Courtney Principal Junior High School Your class is graduating during a period of uncertainty; one which sees this nation at war, and former schoolmates, graduates of Athens High School, killed in action at Pearl Harbor. Others are doing their bit in the Army, the Navy, Colleges, and the industrial defense plants of America. You, too, will enter this life and carry on with the ideals of Democracy uppermost in your heart, remembering that Democracy is more than a high-sounding symbol, or even an attitude — it is a way of life that results in greater justice and increased happiness for all. Therefore, Democracy must not only be learned — it must be lived. This means active participation by you in necessary duties, decisions, and responsibilities that will continue to confront you. There will always be a need for tolerance, good will, and a respect for all nationalities, races, creeds, occupational groups, and different political opinions. Live your own life; be yourself at every stage of the game and you will be a credit to yourself, your family, and your country. Irving W. Hazard Principal Senior High School Up to the present time yours is the largest class ever to be graduated from your Alma Mater. Looking ahead as far as one can, there is no graduating class in sight that will equal yours in numbers; and no class has ever been graduated at a more critical time in the history of our country. With these two facts in mind, one is led to the thought that the Class of 1942 is faced with the opportunity of making the greatest contribution to the welfare of our country of any class in the history of Athens High School. What your contribution as individuals will be, time alone can reveal. But it is our hope that your school experience has helped you greatly in learning the meaning of true patriotism, that those of you who may be called upon to die for your country will meet the ordeal bravely, and that those who are not called upon to make the supreme sacrifice will pay their debt to those that are by living always in the effort to make our country worth dying for. Now having the honor of being called seniors we have ninety-seven, the largest class ever to graduate from Athens High. We embarked upon the social ladder by first sponsoring the annual Hallowe’en Frolic, which was a round and square dance. To raise money for the Annual we staged the Senior Minstrel Show on February 7, which proved to be a success. On April 18 the Senior play, “Youth Takes Over,” was given with a large cast taking part. Now thinking about name cards, announcements, the Prom and commencement is filling our time. Most of us are looking forward to being called alumni, but we shall regret leaving Athens High. We arc now graduating and each and every one of us are going out into the world to try to accomplish some worthwhile things and take our place among the useful citizens of our country. Today our country is involved in a second World War, and it may be quite difficult for us, this class of ’42, to attain the goal for which each one of us has been preparing these last several years. There will be many problems which we will all have to overcome. However, during our years in school we have all had some problems to solve and through the helpful guidance of our teacher we have overcome them, and although our problems to come will be on a larger scale, still, if we but remember their teachings, I am sure we will have no trouble conquering them. Some of us will continue our education by going on to college; others will start now to “tackle” those problems; and still others will be joining our land or sea forces to take their places with many others in helping to defend our country against its aggressors. To the classes coming after us we wish the best of everything and may they all gain as much during their years here as we have. Campbell ’42 •!( 21 £ Senior Prophecy Father Time has sewn away ten long, bitter years. During these years the whole world has been rid of the vicious totalitarianism which has sought to rule the world. A new era has begun, which has the appearance of being the most happy and prosperous the United States and the world have ever known. Let us see what part we, the Seniors of Athens High School, class of ’42, are planning in this new era. After a hard, tedious term as Governor of Pennsylvania, Charles Lambert, the state’s youngest Governor, sits reminiscing in his office in Harrisburg. There seems to be little to do this certain day, since peace and quiet now reign over the nation. Seeing the stenographers, Pauline Lantz and Esther Merrill, working in the outer office, Governor Lambert’s thoughts return to his school days in Athens. Badly needing a vacation, he decides to phone his wife, the former Phyllis Slater, and take a short vacation trip to Athens. After asking his secretary, Louise Macafee, to phone his wife he makes ready for the trip. Hopping into his new super deluxe limousine, designed by Daniel Eddleston and Kenneth Walters, he sped to his suburban home to pick up his wife. “This is a wonderful idea,” comments Mrs. Lambert as they are traveling toward Athens. Stopping at a service station operated by Robert White, they buy a newspaper, The Athens Blizzard, edited by Richard Stroud. In this they read the headlines, “Alumni Banquet, to be held in the New Community Country Club, May 25th.” “Say, we will be just in time for that banquet, Charles!” exclaims Phyllis. “I wonder if we’ll be able to recognize our old classmates,” Charles wonders. The next evening, Mr. and Mrs. Lambert enter the newly-opened country club. The manager of the club, Robert Bailey, meets them at the door and directs them toward the check-room. The manager has hired extra check girls—Helen May, Alice Davidson, Ruth Miller, Jane Allis—for this special occasion. After removing their wraps they approach the hostesses—Phyllis Allyn, Donna Zacharias, Rose Marie Coveney, Margaret Moore, and Catherine Hoffa. After exchanging greetings, hostess Phyllis Allyn explains that James Slater’s “Hep-Cats” are playing that evening, 22 K Senior Prophecy featuring Jean Terry, vocalist. Donna whispers to Mrs. Lambert to notice W illiam Sloat and Thcron Rogers who are members of the nation’s favorite orchestra. The hostesses also explain that Postmaster Jack Knouse and Attorney-General James Fuller are present. Catherine tells them that most of the class is present except Edwin Morse, Paul and Roger Maslin, George Merrill, and Edwin Munn, who are successful farmers and must retire early. All eyes turn to the jitterbugging couple on the dance floor. “That’s Betty Decker and Lewis Taladay dancing, I believe. Betty runs a dancing school in New York,” Mrs. Lambert explains to her husband. Looking around they recognize nurses Louise Hinkson, Jeannette Raulerson, Lucretia Hyde, Evalyn Ellis and Emogcnc Johnston conversing in a corner with Andrew Crowley, proprietor of Crowley’s Drug Store, and Dr. Albert Webster. In another group, laughing, joking and discussing business together are Anne Carr, beauty specialist, Frances Chilson, hair stylist, and Alice Raupers and Seretta Corl, famous illustrators. Several ex-service men—Clyde Arnold, Gordon Bidlack, Donald DeWitt, William Daniels, Alton Fisk and Kenneth Knapp—come hurrying in. They are once again enjoying themselves. They rush towards Patricia Lenox and Phyllis Munn, society debs, who are carried away by the jovial mob. The whole club is dominated by our class of ’42. Seats are few. The Governor and his wife sit down beside Adrian Hazard, the great dramatic actor, and Doris Payne, co-starring with Mr. Hazard in their latest hit, “Gone Writh Our Money” or “But We Won.” They are discussing the picture with Paul Harris, now graduated from college and who is working as a partner at Kolb’s Funeral Home. With this joyous atmosphere let us leave our group to enjoy their old companionships and the renewal of former adventures and sorrows, which we are sure they are bound to discuss. ♦ 23 ) Senior Song Tune: “On to Triumph” by D. We emerged a somewhat smaller class, but still undaunted and determined to make the most of our opportunities and to make our mark in the halls of fame of A. H. S. So far we have succeeded admirably. Knowing well that to be successful a class must have its leaders, we lost no time in choosing the following officers: President, Leon Daniels; Vice-President, Harold Weller; Secretary, Joyce Patterson; Treasurer, Fred Fuller. Our first few class meetings were devoted to preparing for our Sophomore Welcoming Dance and to choosing the pattern for our class rings. The former was highly successful, making a noticeable increase in our treasury. Arrangements were also made to operate the candy vending machines. The Junior Play cast for the play “For Her C-H-E-ild’s Sake,” a comedy mellcr-drayma, was chosen. The play which was directed by Miss Smith, was an overwhelming success when presented March 14. On March 17 the Juniors had the privilege of sponsoring the St. Patrick’s Day Dance. As a fitting climax to the year the Junior Prom was given in May in honor of the Seniors. The “Esquires” from Mansfield proved to be a great attraction. Everything considered, we have made a successful journey thus far and have every reason to look forward with great hopes to our Senior year. DeWitt, Callear, M. After meeting all of our friends and talking over the summer vacation we proceeded to our various classrooms and tried to accustom ourselves to our new schedules. Later in the year, we had our first class meeting. Nominations for class officers and members to represent us at the Student Council were held. Officers were elected as follows: President, Jack Gallagher; Vice President, Richard Finn; Secretary and Treasurer, Lois Weller. Results of the vote for the Student Council members were: for the one year term—Dawn Slater and Rodney Humphrey; for the two year term-Robert Patterson and Jean Hunsinger. In September the Juniors gave us a welcoming dance which was very well attended. Everyone enjoyed round and square dance music which Fraley’s orchestra provided. Along in the mild month of February, our class also held a Valentine Pre-Lcnten dance. This dance was well attended considering the epidemic of measles. At the sports’ assembly program, our Sophomore boys received their share of the honors. The ones receiving letters were: Jack Gallagher, James Hammond, and Robert Smith. These letters were well earned with honest and hard effort. Mr. Hazard called a special meeting of our class at which we were informed that if we ordered our rings this year we would get them with a 10c c discount. Our guest was a salesman who showed us a fine selection of rings. Several of us are looking forward to purchasing one of these. As the warm days of spring roll around and the fish start biting, we long for the wide open spaces. As we all want to pass, we hope the teachers will cooperate with us in gaining this end, so that next year we shall again appear, but this time as aspiring Juniors. Raulerson, Hannon, J. The duties of the council are as follows: (1) To approve of all social functions which take place in the high school. (2) To develop worthwhile assembly programs, consisting of special programs by home rooms and high school organizations, movies, and speakers. (3) To organize a system for traffic in corridors. (4) To have the president preside at all assemblies. In order to raise funds for the movie projector, the council sponsored a round and square dance this year. Our student council has proven very successful giving the students more opportunity for participating in and regulating school affairs. D. February 7, 1942. It was a tremendous success, being well attended and received. This year a new feature, the Maids of Athens, was introduced. These girls, Jeanne Harrigan and Virginia Roberts, gave the welcome and announced numbers. Paul Harris proved to be a fine interlocutor. Our end-men deserve much credit for the laughs they provided and the songs they sang. Monologues were presented by Patricia Lenox and Adrian Hazard. Charles Lambert, Bernard Carr, and Glenn Fish gave a skit in which our end-men learn that Freshmen aren’t so dumb after all. Several vocal solos were sung, most of which the chorus accompanied. Theron Rogers, James Slater, and Doris Jean Smith played instrumental solos. Several dances and drills were presented. The “Living Statues,” representing various sports at A. H. S., were unique. Another unusual number was Donald DeWitt’s and Alton Fisk’s performance with Indian Clubs. A hill-billy skit showed the audience what happens to tardy pupils. In tribute to the Red Cross, a tableau was presented. The Maids of Athens gave our farewell, and, in closing, the chorus sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “God Bless America.” After the evening performance, Miss Reagan, our director, was presented with flowers in appreciation of her part in making our show successful. We wish, also, to thank all others who aided in presenting the Senior Minstrel Show. History of Activities and Organizations Athens High School has long enjoyed many extra-curricular activities. These have contributed much to our pleasure and have helped to build up initiative. The Thespianette Dramatic Club has provided us with much entertainment and enjoyment throughout the year. It is made up of girls from the Freshman and Sophomore classes who arc interested in dramatic work. The latter part of last year a Girls’ Bowling Club was formed. This year the club has shown great advancement and has taken the interest of many girls. This year a new club for girls, The Girls’ Athletic Club, was formed. It is composed of High School girls who are interested in intramural sports. The Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Clubs have been doing their part to aid defense by helping to keep the boys in camp contented. At Christmas time boxes of food were sent to all graduates of A. H. S. who are now in the service. One of the most outstanding boys’ clubs in our school is the Pig-Skin Chasers. This club is made up of boys who have worked hard throughout their high school years to win letters for various sports. The F. F. A. Club is composed of a group of our future farmers. 'Phis club is under the direction of Mr. VanScoten. He has done much to promote an interest in farming among the rural students. A new club this year is the Science Club under the direction of Mr. Benson. Its members arc both boys and girls interested in the development of science. The Boys’ and Girls’ Choruses, under the direction of Miss Wood, are organizations for those students who are interested in music. During the year these clubs often entertain in assembly. The Band and Orchestra have both added much to the enjoyment of our football and basketball games. This year the Band attended several out-of-town games and performed creditably. The Sextette is made up of six girls from the Senior High Girls’ Chorus who have a special talent for singing. These girls practice very hard and deserve much credit. The Serenaders is a group similar to the Senior High Chorus, with the exception that it is composed of people from the Junior High. These girls will someday make up the Senior Girls’ Chorus. This year the Athenian Staff has tried to make the annual compare favorably with the books of other years. We wish to thank all the faculty who have so faithfully spent their time to make our book a success. Two school newspapers have been published this year. Our first one was published in the early fall, the second was published in January. Both issues were a success. The Junior class entertained us this year with an old-fashioned Melodrama. The name of the play was “For Her Chee-ilds Sake.” This play was the first “mellow drayma”'ever produced by our school, and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Senior Play of ’42 will long be remembered by its participants. The play, a comedy, brought unity to the Senior class. One of the most outstanding clubs for girls is our Junior and Senior Domccon. This club is under the direction of Miss White and Miss Kowaleski. It is composed of all girls who have taken or are taking one year of Home Economics. 44 SPORTS Football Team Carr, Lambert, Wood, Hammond, Fairbanks Knouse, May, Smith, French, Burns, Gallagher, Franklin Humphrey, R. Our football team started the season by losing to Montoursville 6-0, but they came back strongly to win from Towanda 20-6 and Tunkhannock 26-0. In both the Towanda and Tunk-hannock games there was the “do or die attitude which helped the team along and it was an attitude that had not been present for some time in an Athens team. Sayre was met under the lights, but Athens appeared to be in the dark, for when it was over we had been defeated by an 8-0 score. However, this is not a score of which we should be ashamed. Bouncing back after the Sayre defeat we met Canton, an old rival, and came out a 7-0 victor. From this time on Athens suffered from injuries and at some games there were four or five men absent from the first string line-up. Three games were lost in succession with Athens falling short by only one touchdown in every game except the last. The scores were as follows: Ralston 6-Athcns 0, Montgomery 13-Athens 7, Muncy 20-Athens 0. Adding up the totals we find that our opponents were outscored by one point (60-59) throughout the entire season. Basketball followed right after the football season and was off to a great start by defeating Waverly 31-30. Due to the large schedule and so many interesting highlights in our basketball season, we shall just look at the following scores and pick out the more important games: Athens 31 Waverly 30 Athens 28 Towanda 25 Athens 43 S. Waverly 31 Athens 34 Mansfield 36 Athens 55 Nichols 13 Athens 24 T roy 38 Athens 42 Rome 25 Athens 27 Canton 12 Athens 14 Troy 32 Athens 31 Mansfield 47 Athens 32 S. Waverly 17 Athens 39 Towanda 28 Athens 24 Canton 16 Athens 34 New Albany 35 Athens 28 Sayre 48 Athens 24 Sayre 47 Athens 30 St. Agnes 29 Out of these scores we shall note that Waverly was defeated for the first time in several years by an Athens team, Canton was beaten decisively in both encounters, Sayre was pushed all the way and was forced to use her first team until the closing seconds, Mansfield, the league winner, squeezed out a 36-34 victory after a nip and tuck battle all the way, and Towanda was defeated after running up a large score against Athens in the early minutes of the game. After looking at these facts we find that it wasn’t a bad season, after all, and some of us can look forward to competing next year, while the more unfortunate ones must say good-by to high school sports forever. ■( 50 fc Senior Achievements JANE ALUS Home Economics Course; Domecon Club 10, 11, 12; Science Club 12; Girls’ Chorus 10, 12; Spring Music Festival 10; Senior Minstrels 12; Junior Prom Committee 11; Service at Banquets 10, 11; Domecon Constitutional Committee 12.
