And oh, the goals to win, Where each, from least to the greatest’ must bravely bear his part— Make straight the furrows, or shape the laws, or dare the crowded mart. —Edna Dean Proctor Page Eleven % ■ students in the advanced classes in shorthand and typewriting have done a great deal of actual secretarial practice this year. Included in this work was learning to operate the mimeograph and the ditto machines, dictation and transcription work for the various teachers- and the building of typewriting and shorthand speed. The students had an opportunity to apply the theory learned in typewriting and shorthand when they were called upon for several weeks to carry on the duties of the secretary in the office of the supervising principal. Preparing programs for the various school activities has been one of the class projects. The major part of the Shorthand II and the Typewriting II classes have won awards from the Gregg Publishing Company for achievements in speed dictation and transcription. fage Twelve First Semester FIRST Planning Clothing for the High School Girl Selection and Construction of Undergarments Personal Living Selection and Construction of Outer Garments Related Science Home Projects V K A R SK ON D SKM ESTER Food in Relation to Health Planning, Preparation and serving of Breakfast House and its Care Food for Children Related Science Home Projects F1RST S EM ESTER S BOON D Planning Food Budget and Marketing Planning, Preparation and serving of Luncheons and Dinners Child Development Home Planning and Furnishing Home Culture and Sociability Related Art Home Projects With second year Home Economics, a full Y E A R Secon d Sem ester Care and Repair of Clothing Selection and Construction of Silk and Wool Garments Selection and Care of Household Linens Home Nursing Income and Spending Related Art Home Projects unit class of Related Art is included. Page Thirteen Agricuku T,„ re lie Agriculture Course is a very practical and interesting course for boys from rural districts. Agriculture is one course which combines theory and practice. All boys taking agriculture must conduct a program of supervised practice on projects on their farms during the school year. This gives a boy a chance to practice some approved principles of fanning and also to earn some inonev for himself. One of the most interesting parts of the agicultural work is the course in Farm Mechanics. Here the boys are taught to do many of the repair jobs which occur on the farm. During the past year the boys have cleaned, oiled and repaired several sets of harness. They have also filed saws, filed axes for themselves and nearby farmers, and have spent some time studying electric wiring. Page Fourteen Science Ijiology is an interesting subject, as taught by Mr. Benson. It deals with ■ ,t ill living things. The classes have an opportunity to do experimental and research work U Much Inis been derived from the use of the new micro projector as it permits the whole class to study at once, things that would ordinarily have to be studied individually. C hemistry is the one most interesting of all high school subjects. It combines the romance of actual experimentation with an interesting classroom study. Trips to nearby manufacturing plants give the students knowledge of applied chemistry. Page Fifteen Page Sixteen Page Seventeen II Photography by Tom F. Loomis Secretary Page Forty Class of 1938, 5 omeone has listed the following as desirable characteristics a high school graduate should have by the time he obtains his diploma: “ 1. He should be sympathetic, honest, dependable, punctual and temperate. 2. 11 ■ should use good language, should speak effectively and pleasingly. He should have social poise, should be courteous, and should follow the rules of social usage. 3. He should know how to take care of himself physically. 4. He should be able to spend such money as he has, to the best advantage. o. By the time one finishes high school, he should have a fair idea about occupations which he might enter. 6. The graduate should have established his cultural foundations. 7. He should have established the foundation for good citizenship.” None of these desirable characteristics can be given to you. It is only through honest and continuous effort on your part that they are obtained. Only by tin actual exercise of them do they mean anything to you. It is my wish that you have realized their value and have striven to acquire these valuable personal qualities and will continue to develop them. E. E. Crediford To the Class of 1938, Tn order to be of the greatest service to the world, one must know and be able to evaluate the needs of the world. To evaluate accurately, a broad knowledge and the ability to use that knowledge in thinking through to a valid conclusion are essential. Through your four years in Athens High School, we have endeavored to endow you as richly as possible with these two essentials for intelligent service. It is our hope that you will make use of your endowment to the fullest in altruistic service to mankind. Sincerely, Irving Hazard Page Forty one FACULTY Dolores Hnttin—Secretary William S.
