'XV I J THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER The true meaning of the word Susquehanna an Indian name unknown but lt IS known that hanna means river There have been many names one of which Choongoments means a river through the woods or one which serves as a door Who would not be proud to discover such a beautiful river? Some people think that Captain John Smith discovered it but this statement is doubted because in the early days of this country the Delaware and Sus quehanna rivers were often mistaken for each other At the top of a map made by early explorers a note has been found which gave the ldea that these men who were Dutch traders in the employment of the Mohawks who left their employment and set out on an explorlng ex peditlon were the first ones to explore the upper Susquehanna The Susquehanna is of historic interest General Clinton wlth his division of four regiments dammed Otsego Lake Durlng the summer the regiments built rafts and about the middle of August 1779 the dam was blown out and the men on rafts floated to Athens It is not only of historic interest but of local pride as well Its beauty has been proclaimed by tourists from all parts of the United States as well as Canada It is said that it flows through the Switzer land of America and many say that it is even more pretty than the Delaware at the Water Gap or the Hudson People who have traveled in Europe say that It IS even prettier than some of the rivers over there whose praise IS so much lauded In The Princess Tennyson speaks of the Gleamlng river s crescent curve This quotation well describes many of the curves of this river which IS not only of beauty but also furmshes a place for swimming and boating The lnformatlon given here IS taken from Tioga Point and Early Athens by Mrs. Louise Welles Murray, a writer who is well acquainted with Revolutionary War and Indian history, particularly of the country which surrounds Athens.
