T' II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI Contents TITLE PAGE STAFF CONTENTS DEDICATION IN MEMORIAM FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES LAST DAYS ADVERTISEMENTS , v L S :iq ' 'u Because without it Atchison High School could not exist We Dedicate the 1959 Trailblazer to Atchison, Our Town. Through the top story windows of Atchison High School, a visitor can look down on what appears to be a moderately populated, average looking town. There can be seen busy downtown sections, comfortable residential areas, peaceful parks, a swim- ming pool, Amelia Earhart Stadium, churches, schools, tennis courts, and the YMCA. But through the eyes of Atchison High School students a completely different view unfolds-for this is Our Town. Suddenly the busy downtown sections become the places where our parents work-where we, ourselves, hold part time jobs and where we buy our clothes, school supplies and cokes. The comfortable residential areas take on the hue of warmth because in them we find the most vital part of our lives -our homes, families and churches. Our eyes continue their journey over the city but do not bypass the parks and the recreational centers which are scented with memories. Scanning the landscape we find fertile fields and bountiful harvests forming a mighty fortress all around the valley. The keystone of the fortress being the Missouri River which winds like a life-giving ribbon, nourishing the land and providing us with food and water. Yes, this is the backdrop for our education. No school could build up a name as outstanding as that of Atchison High School without surroundings such as these and a community whose members so freely aid public education. -THE STAFF vw 'A QI 11 ll! Another phase of Senior school activities where students learn the fundamentals of gov- ernment in a democracy and how we solve our problems as citizens. f continued from page 141 senior year. The busy tune of activities served as our class song for awhile. First came senior elections re- sulting in Larry Bailey becoming our new president, Bill Taylor, vice president, Stan Munson, treasurer, and Judy Bailey, secretary. Co-editors Neva Brockman and Buck Thompson, assisted by their staff of Sharon Vandeloo, Mary Brittain, Susan Frantz, Marilyn Hoecker, Mary McCourt, Richard Ryan, Carolyn Ulrich, Ronald Guthery, Ken Smart, and Butch Ball and Senior reporters Larry Denton, Babe Hawk, David Laurie, and Gil Merritt put the first issue of the Opty out in record time. Neva Brock- man began her Teen Talk column in the Globe and Loretta Boatright and Evelyn Brown, co-editors, and Melvin Willming, business manager, took charge of the Trailblazer. Presidents Buck Thompson, Student Council, Mary Brittain, Girls' A Club, Butch Ball, Boys' A Club, Susan Frantz, Kayettes, Steve Wilson, Hi-Y, Jim Davidson, Drama Club, Loretta Boatright, D.E. Club, Sharon Vandeloo, Medical Careers Club, Ken Nash, Sen- ior Band, Bill Youngman, Senior Orchestra, Bob Hund- ley, Gymnastics Club, Karen Hawk, Office Practice Club, Ken Spencer, T811 Club, and Donna Buckley, Future Teachers' Club, started their organizations off on a busy, enterprising year. Julie Mu-lder, Doris Woolston, Neva Brockman, Corinna Young, Margie Miller, and John Ashley began the year singing as members of the Mad- rigals, and the football team with 14 senior players be- gan that wonderful season in which our only loss was to Lawrence and we reached the number 5 position in the state. Buck Thompson, Curtis Hutchinson, Phil Pick- rell, Butch Ball, Ken Smart, David Laurie, Stan Munson, and Ken Nash received N.E.K.L. All-Star team positions and Buck and Curtis received even higher honors of be- ing selected to the All-Area and All-State teams. Cheer- ing them on in these great achievements were varsity cheerleaders Marilyn Hoecker, Mary Brittain, and Judy Bailey. It was during the half-time of the Highland Park- Atchison Football game that the marching band led by drum majorettes Marilyn Hoecker and Lynn Buenning formed a giant heart and played the wistful song, Melody of Love, for Mary Brittain as a glistening crown of gold entwined with red roses was presented to her as the 1959 Homecoming Queen. Giving Mary and her attendants Marilyn Hoecker, Julie Mulder, Neva Brockman, and Susan Frantz an even greater thrill, the Redmen eleven went on to crush Highland Park to the score of 26-0. We danced merrily at the therefore successful Home- coming Dance, but for some reason all the dances this year seemed to hold added beauty, success, and good times. Marilyn Hoecker reigned as Princess as seniors and underclassmen alike whirled to the tune of Christ- mas in Blue at the Hi-Y semi-formal, and a month later David Laurie was selected as Admiral of the Anchor of the Kayette Twirp fete. The Kayette Spring Formal, Lilac Time, ended the year of club organized dances. But not the year of the Redmen. In December the basketball season was on us and away the boys went on that wild winning spree sweeping to the N.E.K.L. championship, regional title, and finally 4th place in the state. Babe Hawk shared All-State and N.E.K.L. honors as Butch Ball nabbed a spot on the N.E.K.L. All-Star teams. Again the victory song was prevalent as the Senior Pep Band under the direction of Bill Youngman and Marty Binkley urged them on in their record-breaking feats. Track, golf, and tennis came all together in the spring with many seniors going out for the three sports. For past performances it was quite natural to expect and receive victories from the Redmen in these fields, too. Winding up the year at this time were the members of the gymnastics team whose senior stars Bob Hundley, Ken Nash, Pete Martin, and Donnie Willming helped earn many points for them in N.E.K.L. competition. The senior play, Old Doc, was presented on March 19 and 20. With tears in their eyes and smiles in their hearts audiences made three curtain calls a night neces- sary for the cast, Mr. Ned Anderson, and Loretta Boat- fcontinued on page 282 I5 DAVID LAURIE KAREN HAWK NEVA BROCKMAN Friendliest Mr. Friendliest Miss Most Active Girl SUSAN FRANTZ Girl Most Likely to Succeed DORIS WOOLSTON Melodious Miss MIKE MAUL CAROLYN ULRICH Mr. I. Susan Frantz attended K.U. Lead- ership Day, Neva Brockman and Mary Brittain went to New York City on a church sponsored youth Leadership trip, and Judy Bailey was awarded the D.A.R. good citizenship and Future Homemaker of Tomorrow pins. The seniors finished the year by ordering their an- 28 nouncements, having cap and gown fittings, attending picture sittings, accepting invitation to banquets and teas, clowning their way through Kid Day, having a wonder- ful day at the Junior-Senior Picnic, and listening to the solemn Baccalureate service, all with the lovely Sayon- nara which the juniors offered them at Prom time forc- ing them to remember that everything was beginning to end. And as we pass through the long chain of Oak Leaves, we realize that it is all over now. But with cherished diplomas in our hand, fond memories in our mindis eye, and the strains of our song, Pomp and Cir- cumstance, ringing in our ears, we stand ready for what life has in store for us. We are not afraid of what lies ahead for always and ever the seniors of '59 will be able to face the world with the motto With a Song in Our Hearts, learned from the four happy and fun-filled years they spent at A.H.S. Judy Bailey Secretary A representative group of our Junior Class Juniors 50 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Bennett Gerardy Secretary Sally Mize Vice President Bill Zschoche Treasurer Kay Hosier Class History Looking back on their high school years, the mem- bers of the class of '60 will find many wonderful memo- ries they will never forget. As Freshmen the enrollment of the class was 210. Leading the class as homeroom presidents were: Bill Zschoche, Claudia McQueen, Ranney Mize, Bob Creagor, Sally Mize, Fax Robertson, and Dale Ann Johnson. In Sports, the Freshman football team had 2 wins and 4- losses and 16 boys numeraled. The basketball team had a very successful season of 11 wins and 1 loss. Leading the team on to victory were Barbara Thorning and Dale Ann Johnson. There was a large enrollment in the music department. In Junior Student Council, the officers were: David Mize, president, Pam Mangelsdorf, vice president, Nancy Schletzbaum, treasurer. At the close of the year the annual Junior High-Sports Dance, City of Angels, was held and Sally Mize and Bennett Gerardy were crowned king and queen. At the beginning of the sophomore year 198 were enrolled. The homeroom presidents were: Ranney Mize, Stan Lentz, Bill Zschoche, Dale Ann Johnson, Sally Creenlund, Margaret Eckler, and Fax Robertson. Many athletic minded boys entered in football, basketball, track, and golf. Chosen to back the B Team were Barbara Thorning and Sally Mize. Again many musically inclined students were enrolled in the music department. Eleven girls won awards in girls' A Club and David Mize represented the class as treasurer of Student Coun- cil. There was a large participation in the major and minor clubs. Enrolling for the 1958-59 year were 178 juniors. Homeroom presidents who composed the Steering Com- mittee were: Nancy Schletzbaum, Stan Lentz, Janice Peil, Fax Robertson, Dale Ann Johnson, Ranney Mize, and Lois Search. After an exciting campaign, the Junior Class Officers were elected. They were Bennett Gerardy, president, Bill Zschoche, vice president, Sally Mize, sec- retary, and Kay Hosier, treasurer. This year the class showed exceptionally good school spirit and strong enthusiasm for sports. Many partici- pated in varsity football and 7 boys lettered. The varsity basketball team did especially well, winning the N.E.K.L. championship and fourth in the state. One of our class- mates, Junior Miller, was chosen for the State Tourna- ment all-star team. The class was also represented on the golf, tennis, and track teams. Chosen to lead the A Team to victory were Barbara Thorning, Sally Mize, and Sally Greenlund. B Team cheerleaders were Pam Mangelsdorf and Dale Ann Johnson. Eleven members participated in debate and seven par- ticipated in the Bell Ringers. The annual Junior Class Play, Turn Back the Clock, was presented November 20-21 and was a great success. Barbara Thorning represented the class as Secretary of Student Council and will represent the class at Girls' State. Sally Mize was chosen to reign over the Hi-Y Christmas Dance in a beautifully decorated gym. The Juniors are busily preparing for the Prom and the coming year, hoping to make each a huge success. The Redmen in their first game scalped the Fall City Tigers 25-0. The Atchison defense was exceptionally sharp and limited the Tigers to 113 yards rushing and 70 yards passing, while the Redmen were able to rack-up 203 yards rushing and 4-6 yards passing. One of the most outstanding defensive plays of the night was executed during the fourth quarter. Phil Pickerell deflected a passed ball into the hands of Buck Thompson. Buck then chugged 40 yards for the T.D. September 26, was the only Friday Atchison's Redmen did not bring home a victoryg as they were downed by the Lawrence Lions 20-14 at Lawrence. The first half of the game was all Lawrence: however, they were only able to score on T.D. and the P.A.T. The second half had a different toneg as the Redmen were able to pull away and held a 14-7 lead with only four minutes remaining. The Lions took advantage of two Redmen errors shortly after: and were able to pull away with a 20-14 victory. Nobody can describe the tenseness and anxiety of the AHS fans and players during that gameg and no doubt this yearis senior class will never forget it. Bouncing back from the only defeat of the season the Redmen downed the Central Indians of St. Joseph 27-12 at St. Joseph. Coming from behind the Redmen provided a thrilling 20-6 homecoming victory over the Highland Park Scotties on October 10. The first half ended with the Scotties ahead 6-0g however, the Redmen were able to roll to victory. Enjoying their home stay the Redmen continued to be victorious. as they dumped the Ottawa Cyclones 27-0. The Atchison Rednien downed a new foe in the form of the Turner Bears from Kansas City. Kansas. the next Friday night in their last home game. Traveling the next week the Redmen gained second place in the N.E.K.L. by scalping the Leavenworth Pioneers 26-6. The victory was definitely the best team effort of the season. The liedinen wanting to end the season in a win- ning fashion, scalped the Seamen Vikings 42-6. ?.,f7,.f 52c154.s-78-fs? if-16 180-E as Varsity Basketball 2,8 FS-N A15 Breaking every available record, Atchisonis Redmen claimed fourth in State, the N.E.K.L., and the Region's tourna- ment trophies. The season started with the usual Hiawatha game: the Redmen took them in style, coming up with a 56-31 victory. The Redmen lost their only regular season tilt 54-34, to a hot Ward team of Kansas City. However, they quickly recovered and downed Seaman, 56-39, Ottawa 55-42, and Wichita Kapaun, 45-42 in a real thriller. These visitors gave the Redmen a 4-1 record going in the Christmas tournament. The Redmen extended their win- ning streak to 5 hy downing the Seaman Vikings 49-4-2, and then the Washington Vvildcats 31-25, and walked away with the first place trophy. winning Atchisonis first Christmas home tournament in 4 years. In the first game of the New Year, the Redmen continued to be on the rampageg as they downed Hiawatha. 39-29, to gain their second victory of the season over the Indians. Lawrence fell next, 41-35: Leavenworth, 50-41, and finally Highland Park, 52-28, as the Redmen extended their winning streak to 9 and waltzed away with 4 victories against no defeats in the first round of N.E.K.L. action. Next we downed Ward, 55-53. The Cyclones proved to be the only team to heat the Redmen in regular season playg however, the score was evened. The Redmen played Ottawa, came out in front to win 49-23. Seamen 45-35, extending their record to 5-0 and their winning streak to 12. The next two games were big ones for the Redmen: as they determined the N.E.K.L. Championship. Atchisoifs basket- teer's proved up to it though, as they dumped Lawrence, -I-5-37. and Leavenworth, 82-72. These victories left only Wichita Kapaun and Highland Park to deal with. Winning the Witfhita game by Butch Downing sinking free throws in a sudden-death overtime 42-40: the Redmen tied the old record for consecutive wins set by the 1954 N.E.K.L. winning team at 15 with this victory. AtClliSOll7S last game of the regular season proved to be quite a thriller, even though the score of 51-34 over Highland Park does not indicate it. After finishing the season with a perfect con- ference record and a 16-game winning streak, the Redmen set their sights on the Regionals. The first game pitted the Redmen against the Hayden Wildcatsg who fell to the tune of 53-40. The next game, for the Championship, proved to he the most thrilling game of the season: as the Redmen downed their old foe. Lawrence. 37-35. By doing this the Redmen established another record: as they were the first team in .-Xtr'hison's Class 1:3533 lvasketlinall history to do this. The Redmen then marched on to State where they defeated Junction City 11-37: and gained a position in the semifinals. The game played on Friday the thirteenth proved to he the Redmens doom. as they were dumped hy the Sumner Spartans 50-62. There were many individual honors as well as new records set and old records hroken. We should all be yery proud of this yearls history-making team.
