X Q 3' ,v 'Y 55719025 Senior Class History Senior Class Officers Joyce McCoale -Secretary Dick Roark-President Shirley Ebling-Treasurer Ronnie Clarkson-Vice President After walking for twelve years down the long Hall of Education, we come to a Door-The Door of Commence- ment. For some it is the end of the Hall, leading to a iab, or service in the armed forces, or marriage. For others lt is merely an entrance to another Hall, that of a col- lege education. On graduation day, when the Door closes behind us, there will be no returning, except by way of those wan- derful things called memories, and all of us hold many happy and unforgettable memories of our high school years. For instance, there is the memory of Ron Clarkson on the varsity team that brought us our N.E.K.L. cham- pionship in '54, or the memory of Floydene Lauffer, Alnama Flachsbarth, Ronnie Dawe and Dick Roark win- ning many honors in speech for AHS, or of the chorus and band always making a fine showing, or of Pat Hav- ens, Sue Reppert, Shirley Ebling, Jean Millikan and Kathy Lentz taking many honors in art. All of us share memories of our iunior year: of Junior Jones, Ron Clarkson, Floydene Lauffer and Katy Eck- els being elected class officers, of presenting the first production in the brand new auditorium, Home for Christmas , the iuniar play, directed by Mildred Worrel, of preparing far the Junior-Senior Prom, Mardi Gras , of Ron Clarkson being elected president of the Student Council for our senior year, of the seniors entertaining us with a picnic in return for the Pram, af Ran Clarkson, Jim Mall, Ronnie Dawe, T.K. Thompson, and Dick Roark being selected to attend Sunflower Bays' State at Wichi- ta, and Shirley Ebling being selected to attend Sunflower Girls' State at Lawrence. With the election of Dick Roark, President, Ran Clarkson, Vice-President, Joyce McCaole, Secretary, and Shirley Ebling, Treasurer, our senior year got under way. Soon clubs were organized and officers elected, and the first issue of the Optimist was printed, with Jim Mall, June Reid, Joyce Taylor, Ernest Petry, Ed Bailey, Mary Haldorsen, Virginia Jiminez and Wilma Steele on the staff, Work was also begun on the Trailblazer with staff members John Eagle, Editor and Phil Martinez, Business Manager. With football season upon us, we were led in cheers by Rosamond Caraway, Joyce McCaole, Helen Arm- strong and Kathy Lentz, another senior, Jimmie Mae Hundley, led the B team. Alnoma Flachsbarth and Floydene Lauffer, as drum-maiarettes, led the band at the games. Out of six candidates, Rosamond Caraway was elected Homecoming Queen, with Karen Hawk, Doris Peak, Kathy Lentz, Nancy Hlner and Shirley Eb- ling as her attendants. During the year, many seniors took various honors. Nadine Blair was chosen to attend Leadership Day at K.U., Shirley Ebling was picked as DAR Girl, Kathy Lentz was elected treasurer of Student Council, Alnoma Flachsbarth, Nadine Blair, Shirley Neavitt and Rosamond Caraway were elected officers of Kayettes, Dick Roark and Wayne Blackman were President and Vice-Presl- dent of Hi-Y, Shirley Ebling was President of Pep Club and Nadine Blair and Brenda Johnson were Secretory and Treasurer, some seniors won scholarships. With basketball season, we were proud to place Ron Clarkson in the tap ten scorers in the state. Soon after the first of the yea, Bernard Hudson, the cast and the crew got to work on the senior play, Ahl Menl , which was presented April 6. Later in the year, Joyce Wentz's bellringers were chosen to attend the National Music Convention in St. Louis, with seniors Gerald Touslee and Helen Armstrong members, Gerald also placed second in a state music contest with a clarinet solo. After the play, graduation activities got under way with teas and banquets, and the ordering of announce- ments, pictures, and caps and gowns. Then there was Kid Day, when all the seniors lived their second child- hood for half a day. Following this was the picnic in which we were host to the iuniors, ln return for the Prom. With Baccalaureate and Commencement, the Door was open and shut behind us, and now there is nothing but memories. This year has been filled with fun, work, and excitement. But as they look back over their pre- vious years they find many memories that will be hard to forget. As freshmen the enrollment stood at 189 students. The home room presidents were as follows: Dave White, Sharon lngels, Tamara Dawe, and Kitten McCourt. On the freshmen green and white team were 12 athletic minded boys. They finished the season winning 9 of 17 games. Approximately 30 were in Sr. Band and Orches- tra. ln debate there were 21 arguing whether or not the the President of the U.S. should be elected by a direct vote of the people. We'll long remember the Jr. High Sports Dance, April in Paris, when Dave Thorning and Evelyn Stanley were crowned king and queen. Enrolling as sophomores were 162 students. Leading the home rooms were Charles Berry, Nelson Greenlund, Darlene Zoschke, Kitten McCourt, and Patty Peterson. There were 25 boys entering in sports. Dale Henderson, Dave Thorning, and Dave White were on a medleY relay team that won third place in an NEKL track meet. Chosen to back the B' team basketball team were Genny Lentz, Patty Peterson, and Evelyn Stanley. There were 24 musically inclined students in Sr. Band and Orches- tra. Jean Craig and James Farrell were members ofthe Bell Ringers. The sponsors of the class were Gerald Peterson, Shirley Bloyd, Festus Liverett, Rex Schwein, and Glenn Phipps. There were 30 girls in Kayettes, and there were 10 boys in Hi-Y. ln Girls A Club 23 were members, while in Boys A Club only 2 were members. Beginning the 55-56 year were 138 iuniors. Class sponsors and home room officers were as follows: Lea Denny, President, Wayne Stull, Vice-President, Ronnie Buriss, Secretary, Judy Joice, and Treasurer, Kitten McCourt: Mildred Worrel, President, Nelson Greenlund, Vlce-President, Joe Mize, Secretary, Jean Craig, and Treasurer, Charles Berry: John Smith, President, Judy Ball, Vice-President, Beverly Neavitt, Secretary, Bill Allison, and Treasurer, Judy Bryant: Bernard Hudson, President, Bill Knoch, Vice-President, Ann Allen, Sec- retary, Vivian Cerre, and Treasurer, Melva Searles: Kay Eskeldson, President, Alice Peak, Vice-President, Dave Thorning, Secretary, Glenn Cochran, and Treas- urer, Dale Henderson. Representating the home rooms in Student Council were Dave White, John Mize, Dave Thorning, Tom Wy- rick, Evelyn Stanley, and Patty Peterson. After campaign speeches and painting posters and many other things, the Jr. Class Officers were elected. The class chose Tom Wyrick, President: Bill Allison, Vice-President, Patty Peterson, Secretary, and Evelyn Stanley, Treasurer. The Junior play was presented November 22, Smart- er and Smoother, which turned out to be very success- ful. There were 10 boys out for basketball. This was the year we placed second in the regionals. Entering sports were about 25 boys. Patty Peterson was chosen as a varsity cheerleader, and Genny Lentz and Evelyn Stan- ley were chosen to back the B' team. Larry Fowler and Shirley Surritt won gold keys at the Emery, Byrd, and Thayer art exhibit. Kitten McCourt was selected from the iunior class to represent AHS at Girls State. Playing in Sr. Band 8. Orchestra were 22 students from our class. Juniors who have shown iournalistic abilities were Barbara Hoecker, Kitten McCourt, Carmen Pace, Ann Allen, Sally Frantz, Roberta Morrison, Jean Craig, Sharon Lein, Sharon Young, Beverly Muncie, Keith Cook, Ralph Cooley, Patty White, Sandy Laurie, and Bill Nestler. At the end of the year the Juniors gave the Junior- Senior Prom and then Seniors gave the Juniors the plc- nic. The members of the Class of '57 will long remember their iunior year as a highlight of their high school days, naw they look forward to next year, which should be best of all. 37 Phyllis Cawthorn Vlvian Clrre Jaclcle Christian Doris Cluke Glenn Cochran Ralph Cooley Kelth Cook Jean Cralg Kathy Cummings Charles Cushlnberry Margaret Dalgh Jackie Dame Tamara Dawe Wilson Dobbs Henry Dove Judy Ellis Gary Eylar Larry Fowler Sally Frantz Harold Goehner Richard Adams Ann Allen Blll Alllson Judy Bahr Judy Ball Ronald Barelss Janlce Berry Kenneth Berry Ronnle Bond Marlene Bramble Donald Bramble Marlene Brown Judy Bryant Ronald Burton Vlrgll Carson ,A ,. Denny, Stinson, Smith, Lester, Kohler, Henoch Completing a rough football season of three wins and six losses, the Redmen displayed a much greater spirit the will to win as they finished the season with the best record since 1952. Coach Tom Lester's crew out played six of their nine opponents. Starting out the season, the Redmen clashed the seasoned Fall City Tigers and were defeated, 12-7. The Redmen opened the scoring in the first quarter an: 7-0 at the half. Right after the half, Carl Downing, half-back, sped 65 yards for a TD, only to have it called back clipping penalty. Falls City then came back with two TD's the same period and won the game. The following Friday the Redmen hosted the Central lndians, and were defeated 13-7. This game was one o' most thrilling during the season. After the Redmen tied the score in the fourth period, the lndians came back their second TD to take the lead 13-7. The Redmen took the kick-off in the last minute of play and marched sixty yards to the Central two where the game ended. Starting out league play, the Redmen met the always powerful Lawrence Lions and were defeated 32-8. Still looking for their first win of the season, the Red and Gold iourneyed to Highland Park and were defeated 31 Four Redmen fumbles in their own territory in the first half put the Scotties out of reach of the Redmen as a two to down rally in the last period fell short. After losing four games in a row, the Redmen traveled to Ottawa and won their first game since 1954, 24-21. 0t1 started out the scoring in the first period and increased their lead to 21-6 as the last quarter began. The Redmen lied for two touchdowns to make the score 21-18. Then came that desire to win. With less than two minutes top Tom Wyrick, Junior quarterback, stole the ball and raced 47 yards for the winning touchdown. With the taste of victory in their mouth, the Redmen traveled to Benton in St. Joe and crushed the cardinals 32 Highlights of the game were Carl Downing's first quarter touchdown runs of 94 and 76 yards. Returning home after winning two, the Redmen ran into the powerful Washington Wildcats and were crushed 41 With their big line opening up the holes, the Wildcats crossed our goal six times during the game, while the Red were held at bay until the last quarter. The Redmen were shut-out for the second time this season when they traveled to Argentine and were defeated I by the Mustangs. Returning home for the homecoming and last game of the season, the Redmen hosted the Leavenworth Pioneers defeated them 21-7. The first quarter ended without a score, but with one and a half minutes left in the first half, Downing picked up a Leavenworth fumble and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. Leavenworth came right back to tie 1 with an 85 yard kick-off return. The score at the half stood 7-7. ln the last half Downing came back with two to downs to climax a successful homecoming. Carrying most of the load for the Redmen this season were these four all N.E.K.L. second team seniors: Carl D1 ing Halfback, who led the team in the scoring and rushing departments, Clarence Birch, Fullback, who was alw there to make that needed yard, T.K. Thompson, Guad, and Dave Johnson, End, both of whom made more than1 share of tackles and blocks. Not to be left out, are these senior boys who played good ball all season, Clarence Campbell and Bill Gill Guards, Phil lngels and Charles Miller, Centers, Junior Jones, Gilbert Pickrell, and Kenneth Gerardy, Tackles, Ge Kerford, End, James Finney, Halfback, and Don Leisey, Fullback. The frosh opened their season on their home field by defeating Highland Park seven to six in a drizzling rain. Leavenworth defeated the frosh in the second game thirteen to O which was played there. Lawrence overwhelmed the freshman in the next game twenty-six to nothing at Haskell Stadium in Lawrence. Thu Lawrence line averaged 'I74 pounds per man, more than 20 pounds a man heavier than the light Atchison line. Atchison scored at will in overwhelming the young Effingham tigers I9-O. The frosh struck early and coasted aftel building o I3-0 halftime lead. The Central game was a letdown for the frosh as they never could get started and lost O-7 to the Missouri team.
