'51 SENIORS NN ,f Z , x F I mi! fl 1 'w Fi I 31 M 2 u i f f vw-T H' History of the Senior Class Many exciting and solemn moments have been experienced and felt by all of us as seniors. This year ends our role as students in A.H.S., behind us will be left many memories. Soon each one of us will begin a different role in life. While some of our classmates defend our coun- try, striving to gain world peace, others will be studying in colleges, universities, and specialized schools to obtain a higher education. Still others will be taking 'their place in the community as better citizens. Each one of us has experienced thrilling mo- ments during high school activities. Perhaps one which we all felt, was during our junior year when the varsity team became N.E.K.L. champions. We were especially proud that two of our classmates Bill Brittain, and H. C. Palmer, were on the team. Another thrill to most of us might have been when Bob Baily, student council president, participated in the dedication ceremonies of the new school building. There are so many different things that have also thrilled us, such as when the band per- formed during the half-time ceremonies, K. U. Band Day, when our classmates Valerie Leibowitz, and Mary Linder, won award, while representing our school at debate contests, when Bobbie Smith, Sharon Worrel, and Jim Hosier won state honors at the state Business Education Convention, enabling them to attend the National Convention in Rich- mond Virginia, with Don Thompson, national dele- gate elect. Perhaps our first chance at wearing the shoes appeared during our junior year when we held class elections. With Bob Bailey, ,lim Wells, Bobby Lister, and Io Lister, as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively, we began a year full of excitement. During the month of November, we presented the class play, Father Was a Housewife, under the direction of Mildred Worrel. Completing the production of the play, we began plans for the Junior-Senior Prom, which we gave in honor of the seniors. We chose Over the Rainbow as the theme for our prom. In return, the seniors hon- ored us as their guests at the Junior-Senior Picnic, we'll, never forget the results-we were really Red men by the end of the day. With the appointment of Barbara Lister to Girls' State, and Bob Bailey, Bill Brittain, H. C. Palmer, Bob Ryan, and Bob Voigt to Boys' State, members of our class began new responsibilities, and we soon found ourselves in our senior year. With slogans, and posters scattered everywhere, senior class elections were held. H. C. Palmer was elected Class president to lead our class of 119 members. Joyce Schmidt was elected to be our vice president, Barbara Lister was elected class secretary, being elected as an officer of our class for a second yearg and Dorothy Wohlgemuth was elected treasurer. Soon club elections were held, and many mem- bers of our class accepted duties as officers of these clubs. Our Trailblazer and the Optimist were edited by members of our class, and an exciting year was well in progress. Leading the band in parades, and the half-time appearances at the football games were Valerie Leibowitz and Suzanne Sargent. With the football season came Homecoming, at which Valerie Leibo- witz reigned as queen. Basketball season soon arrived, and with lots of pep and enthusiasm, Joyce Schmidt, Valerie Leibo- witz, and Bill Hamm, led us in cheers at the sports events as varsity cheerleaders from our class. Cheering for the B team was our classmate, ,lean Armstrong. As seniors, we have received many honors. Carol Levell was chosen by the senior class and faculty, to be our DAR representative and Dorothy Wohl- gemuth was chosen by the faculty to attend K. U. Leadership Day. More honors came when ,lo Lister and Bill Brittain were crowned queen and king of the Snow Ball, a dance given by the Kayettes. Soon afterwards, Patsy Dunlap and Don Gillespie reigned over the Cupid Capers dance. Finally we began graduation activities. Gra- mercy Ghost was chosen, by the play committee, as the senior class play, and was presented April 22. Senior pictures were takeng announcements and name cards ordered, and we were measured for our caps and gowns. Plans were made for the annual Junior-Senior picnic, and we invited the members of the junior class to be our guests, honoring them in return for inviting us to the Prom. During the weekof graduation, we attended din- ners, teas, and Baccalaureate services. Of course, the traditional Kid Day was included, and we were really kids again for a whole day of excite- ment. Then, to the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance, we received our diplomas after the gra- cious tradition, the carrying of the oak leaves, was presented. Beginning our lives in a new way, our friends, classmates, and teachers will become important factors in our memorable schoolday thoughtsg but the character traits which we have recieved throughout our education will be ours to use graciously forever. Tom Wyriek. David Thorning, Albert Miller, Dick After completing the 1954 season on the gridiron, the Redmen are looking forward to next year when 15 lettermen will be returning. The Redmen ended the 1954- schedule with a record of 0 wins, and 8 losses. The most thrilling game of the season took place on Washington Highis new field. We battled the Wildcats to a 14--13 loss, and un- doubtedly played our finest game of the season. We played an extremely tough schedule this year, as we met two of the finest teams in the country. Shawnee-Mission and Lawrence were rated alternately through-out the year as the number one team in the state. The Redmen also met Falls City, Nebraska, Ottawa, Highland Park. Argentine, and our ole-time rival, Leavenworth. Graduating this year are: Larry Henderson, end, Bob Wagner, end: Bill Brittain, halfbackg Bob Ryan, guardg and H. C. Palmer, quarterback. Palmer was picked on Lawrence High's all-opponent team. Ryan and Palmer received injuries which kept them out of some games. 1954 FOOTBALL RECORDS Varsity Atchison, ,, , ,iee ,. First row: Tom Wyrick, .lim Finney, Bill Brittain, Unlike last year's high-flying, league-winning cagers, the 1954-55 team did not capture the championshipg but they did, however, provide plenty of entertainment for the Atchison basketball fans. This was the first year that our new gym was put into use. The gym is undoubtedly one of the better gyms in the state, and was quite a change from the old Memorial Hall court for both the fans and the players. Leaving the team this year are three seniors: Larry Hender- son, Bill Brittain, and H. C. Palmer. With these being the only graduates, it should leave Coach Shafer with plenty of ma- terial in his up-and-coming juniors and sophomores. The prospect of summer vacation sends happy echoes through the resounding halls of Atchison High School. Some will walk down these steps for the last time, never to return again. Some will be happy, some will be sad, others will be bewildered by the fut h d b ' ' ure a ea , ut most will be prepared to face that future squarely and honestly, knowing full well they are ready. If these stained and solid walls could speak what secret would they re 9 veal. Are they merely masses of rock and mortar, used only for a functional purpose? No, this and other buildings like it are living symbols of man's thirst and quest for truth and knowledge. As you go out the door, down the steps, and on the sidewalk, stop, look back and up at the silent majesty of this building. Give it a smile and a Thank Youn before you go on your way.
