Billings, superintendent of schools at Lytle, Texas, suggested to the superintendents who were assembled at the annual County Meet that the schools of Atascosa County publish a cooperative school annual. The idea was received with affirmative interest and a decision was reached that eventually resulted in the publication of this Atascosa County School Annual. The major objective in publishing this book is to record for future generations a cross section of the educational facilities, personnel, and organization now existing in the county. In presenting this objective. the teachers sponsoring the work and the student helpers have estab- lished a worthy example of initiative, industry, and unselfish service. The organization, data, and technique make a creditable compilation that will serve the purpose of the book, Atascosa County contains 1358 square miles of land and has a population of l5,654. There are twenty-six common school districts -and five independent school districts in the county. The common school districts have a census population of 2640 with an enrollment of 1656 in school and an average daily attendance of ll37, There are sixty-one teachers in the common schools. The five independent school districts have a census population of 3517 with a school enrollment of 2536 and an average daily attend- ance of 1730. There are sixty-two teachers in the independent school districts of the county. The common schools of the county are meeting the requirements of standardization rapidly and a large per cent of the schools are now first class rural schools. The independent school districts offer facili- ties and standards for primary and secondary education comparable with other sections of Texas and the United States. The cost of education is favorable with other sections. Teachers' salaries are grow- ing more adequate along with security of tenure. It is the desire of the educational leaders of the county that this cooperative book may mould a common tie of all the schools in the county to the end that education and its beneiits may be expanded within the borders of Atascosa County. S. V. BURKS 'Public School Directory 1934.
