When thoughts Of the last bitter hour come like a blight Over thy spirit, and sad images Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall, And breathless darkness, and the narrow house Make thee to shudder and grow sick at heart-- Go forth, under the open sky, and list To Nature's teachings, while from all around-- Earth and her waters, and the depths of air-e Comes a still voice-- Yet a few days, and thee The all-beholding sun shall see no more In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground, Where thy pale form was laid with many tears, Nor in the embrace of ocean shall exist Thy image. Earth, that nourished thee, shall claim Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again, And, lost each human trace, surrendering up Thine individual being, shalt thou go To be a brother to the insensible rock And to the sluggish clod which the rude swain Turns with his share and treads upon. The oak Shall send his roots abroad and pierce thy mold. Yet not to thine eternal resting place Shalt thou retire alone; nor oouldst thou wish Couch more magnificent. Thou shalt lie down With patriarehs of the infant world--with kings, The powerful of the earth--the wise, the good, Fair forms, and hoary teers of ages past, All in one mighty sepulcher. The hills Rock-ribbed and ancient as the Sun; the vales Stretching in pensive qui etness between; The venerable woods; rivers that move In majesty; and the complaining brooks That make the meadows green; and, poured round all Old Ocean's gray and melancholy waste-- Are but the solemn decorations all Of the great tomb of man. The golden sun, The planets, all the infinite host of heaven, Are shining on the sad abodes of death Through the still lapse of ages. All that tread 'The globe are but a handful to the tribes That slumber in its bosom. Take the wings Of morning, pierce the Barcan wilderness, Or lose thyself in the continuous woods Where rolls the Oregon, and hears no sound Save his own dashingse-yet the dead are there; And millions in those solitudes, since first The flight of years began, have laid them down In their last sleep-the dead reign there alone So shalt thou rest, and what if thou withdraw In silence from the livingsy and no friend Take note of thy departure? All that breathe Will share thy destiny. The gay will laugh When thou art gone, the solemn brood of care Plod on, and each one as before will chase His favorite phantom; yet all these shall leave Their mirth and their employments, and shall come And make their bed with thee. As the long train Of ages glides away, the sons of men, The youth in life's green spring, and he who goes In the full strength of years, matron and maid, The speechless babe, and the gray-headed-mane- Shall one by one be gathered to thy side, By those who in their turn shall follow them. So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His Chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. I J I It . ruv-iu-J Htty. 1' rm 1' n I t . M; Jiet-tu-unuwe; AOU.H.S. has changed greatly in the past year. Everywhere things are expanding and changing. The enrollment is increasing, the faculty has several new members and clubs are becoming more ac- tive. However, the biggest change is in the appearance of the campus . Everywhere you look new build- ings have sprung up. The girls baseball diamondhas become a modern gym. Our lawn is now the site of four new classrooms, while a new shop has popped up near the auto shop. And yes, even the band room has been moved to make way for a swimming pool. A.U.H.S. has truly become a different school in one year. W. 1,959? mAWw 2 's ' me$ 3w Dedication He is known to the students as a teacher, a coach, an advisor, and as an individual ded- icated to helping the students of A.U. H. S. As a coach he helps us to learn the skills of the sport, but more important he inspires sportsmanship among the athletes. As a teach- er, he engenders in his students a love of our country, its democracy, and an interest in its history. As a Junior class advisor, he gives himself wholeheartedly to helping us solve our problems. And so, in appreciation for all these things and for the time, efforts, and talents he has devoted for our benefit, we, the Santa Lucia Staff of 1965, respectfully dedicate this volume to Mr. George Tousseau Mr. Tousseau has many expressions, which are well known to all H i '11' t of us. e is w1 mg 0 help any student who desires it. A school is people, all of the people who work in it and all who attend classes there, and their attitudes, and accomplishments make it the kind of school it is. I sincerely hope that as you look through this Yearbook, each one of you will be proud of what is recorded here, and that each will be glad to have been a part of this school this year. George B . These are the people who help students find their place in the world if they are not going to college. They seek to develop those essential skills for the jobs available to high school graduates. As the student slowly learns, they are always ready to correct, encourage, or praise. To these teachers their jobs are more than a means of employment. We may grumble about cold showers, dislike a particular sport or declare our teachers inhuman to make us dress out on those cold, foggy days, but the fact remains that P.E. is a lot of fun and an essential part of our education. These coaches do not try to make us all great athletes. But they do seek to promote the importance of physical excercise as a prerequisite to sound health. They have taught us cooper- ation with authority and peers alike. Our daily P.E . classes serve not only as a valuable health stimulant but as a recess from sedentary academ 10 Classes . Mr. Hamann pauses to think about his class. It pays to increase your vocab- ulary, But you have to understand some thing about grammar. These are the cries of our language department. Perhaps they say zut when they get excited, or something more usual, like Good Heavens, or a complicated Latin phrase, but they all agree that the correct use of language is one of the most important skills we can have. Written or spoken, English, Spanish, or Latin words are the tools we use for communication. AUHS students are exposed to four years of Social Science ranging from Social Studies to American Government. These teachers try to make us aware of man's past mistakes with the hope that we will become better citizens and more desirablepeople. These courses have given us an insight in-to human nature and will influence our personal behavior as social beings in a group . Four years ago the class of 1965 came to AUHS, full of new ideas and lots of school spirit. Leadership ability at once became evident through its out- standing Student Council Representatives, who were not afraid to fight for the opin- ions of the class. By the time we were Sophomores, the Student Body had handed over several positions of leadership to 1965 class members. Since then, we have not only provided leadership but also an example of school spirit. We never outgrew our enthusiastic support: for school activities. We are proud of our class but we are even more proud of our school. CLASS ADVISORS: Mrs. Howe, Mr. Wall- ace, Miss Patchin, and Mr. Stewart. gtav , true Big John. Gulliver, who '5 that? It is not merely the tool of organization for the student body but also an example of democracy in action. Our lesson in govern- ment begins with the represent- atives who are elected on the basis of leadership, dependability, and interest in student body affairs. The fact that students may give opinions to their representative leads to another lesson in govern- ment--Student Council action. This year's greatest example of Student Council action came through the swimming pool drive when the student body united to bring in our donations to the swimming pool fund. Credit goes to Mr. Smith to whom we owe the idea, the student body for its cooperation, and the Student Coun- cil for planning and executing the drive efficiently. Club Letterman's Club has been a very active club for 1964e1965. Many success- ful activities were carried out by a membership of 45. The club's main project was the annual scholarship for an outstanding senior letterman. Fund raising activities included a bottle drive, the sale of rooters ribbons, and Greyhound decals. Fun was provided in the form of the annual dance, which also served as a fund raising activity. The end of a successful year was completed with the an- nual picnic attended by the lettermen and their guests. The Girls' League is the only club on campus which includes each and every girl in school. Its purpose is to endeavor to create a spirit of unity among AUHS girls. It seeks to promote a sense of belonging to the club, to the school, and moreover, to each other. Through working together the girls have accomplished such feats as pre- senting the Girls' League Formal, or- ganizing a candy sale, and establishing i r - W p . u the local Amerloan Fleld seerce The decoration committee worked hard to make the Chapter. formal a success. 68 I've never heard Old MacDonald played like this before ! Why don't we stop looking, and start playing?? Our foreign exchange student, Claes Rudberg, once said, The year I lose here due to the fact that I have to take my senior year over again, is actually won for me. I've met new friends, taken new subjects, and gained a better understanding of the American way of life. Through Claes we have gained a friend and a better comprehension of life in Sweden. Though his home is thousands of miles away, he is one of ushere at AUHS. Whether playing foot- ball, making a speech, or contributing to a class discussion, he is a typical teenager and a friend to all. Claes is spending his year here in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Hughell and their family. 69 H z'lltap News Linda Boydstun, Editor; Mrs. Howe, Adviser; EIEATEDf Linda Carr, Feature Editor; Sondra ElliOt: Shirley Heilmann, Ass't.
