The outstanding development of 19-15-413 at Atascadero High School was the construction of a magnificent field for sports in the area adjoining the previous school plant and just to the west of it. The board of trustees had been gradually acquiring the property over a seven-year period. and by the end of the war were in a position to start actual construction. Grading began on October 9. 1945. and was carried on with county road equipment. used by arrangement with Supervisor .Iohn Ruskovich, and under direction of Mr. Campbell Miller. Nearly fifteen feet had to be taken off a bank at the south end. and the north end had to be built up about twelve feet. Following this. topsoil was moved in to cover the in- field, water pipes were laid, grass was planted. and a cement curb con- structed around the track, which itself had to be surfaced and rolled. The completed job. still minus bleachers, was opened with the cere- mony and track meet previously described. and consists of a standard 440- yard track with a 220-yard straightaway on the east side. a full-sized football field, and a baseball diamond. Atascadero's Lions Club started a drive. which was enthusiastically backed by other civic organizations. to provide a fund for lighting the field. About SBL400. roughly half of the estimated cost. was raised and 'turned over to the board for this purpose. At the time of writing this, postwar shortages prevented the purchase of equipment. but lights were promised as soon as available.
